The new BMW M3 2022 model has been officially announced, and it has a lot more to offer than just an attractive appearance. In the future, it will be offered with AWD drivetrain soon, but for now, it still has only three typical BMW elements: an I6 engine, a manual transmission, and a rear-wheel drive system. .

Naturally, the name M3 has a long-standing lineage derived from the legendary E30. That car has never been forgotten by the manufacturer, and so in a new video on its official YouTube channel, BMW shares the story of the special BMW E30 M3 Cecotto, which was first introduced in 1989.

Historically, BMW has produced countless special versions of the M3, such as the E46 CSL. Cecotto’s version may not be as well-received as other brothers, but it also has a good story of its own. Specifically, this M3 is named after the legendary Venezuelan driver Johnny Cecotto, who won the glory at 24 Hours of Nurburgring in 2021.

Between 1989 – 1992, Cecotto won 10 victories in the German DTM race in an M3. BMW only makes 505 M3 Cecotto, and they do not differ too much from the standard E30 M3. The most obvious change is that the M3 Cecotto uses an upgraded 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine with 215 horsepower, and an additional carburetor.

In terms of form, the 1989 BMW M3 Cecotto is offered in only three exterior colors: Misano red, Nogaro silver, and Macao blue. It comes with a serial number metal piece inside to remind you of the car’s rarity. Apart from these subtle changes, it’s not much different from the regular M3, meaning it has excellent handling and a pleasant roar from the 4-cylinder engine.

The performance of the M3 Cecotto is of course nothing compared to the later M3 models, but the E30 generation has set a significantly high standard for all other versions to follow.
