Photo: InHope Pictures “It doesn’t matter if you are disabled or normal, whether you are blind or have no arms or legs, as long as you have a strong will, you can always accomplish something that others cannot ,” Zhang told Reuters news agency. Zhang conquered the 8,849m high Himalayas on May 24 with three guides and returned to the camp on May 27. Born in Chongqing City, Zhang lost his sight at the age of 21 due to glaucoma. He was inspired by Erik Weihenmayer, an American blind climber who climbed Mount Everest in 2001. After that, Zhang started climbing with the guidance of a friend, Qiang Zi. Nepal reopened Mount Everest to foreigners in April after a period of closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “I was still scared because I couldn’t see where I was going and couldn’t find my center of gravity, so sometimes I would fall. However, I still think that even if it’s difficult, I still have to face it. It’s part of climbing. There is difficulty, there is danger, and this is what climbing means.”

Young Chinese people flock to beauty centers with the desire to own “goblin ears” to make their faces slimmer and more youthful.
The “goblin ear” that was once considered a facial deformity has now become a trend among young Chinese. Many people go to cosmetic centers to create “goblin ears” with the desire to look smaller and younger.

Recently, Chinese young people, specifically the generation born after 2000, are trending towards creating goblin ears. Many young people even went online to praise the surgery that was more successful than expected to help themselves become younger and more beautiful. Shaping “goblin ears” is becoming a new aesthetic trend in China. (Photo: SCMP) “It is amazing. I didn’t have to change anything on my face, and my friends said I looked like a completely different person when I finished the surgery. My face looks smaller and more agile,” wrote one Chinese netizen. “I want surgery too”, “It was worth it” and “Unbelievable” were comments in favor of the “goblin ear” plastic surgery. Not only women, but even men in China are flocking to hospitals for “goblin ear” surgery. A large-scale cosmetic center in Shanghai, Mylike Medical Cosmetic, said that they have received a large number of appointments for “goblin ear” surgery. “This procedure is completely safe and common. Every day, we have a long line of customers waiting for their turn to do surgery,” sales officer Linlin of Mylike Medical Cosmetic told the South China Morning Post (SCMP). Dr. Yu Wenlin at Gaoshang Aesthetic Center in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, said that he performs six cosmetic ear surgeries for clients every day. “I only see young people born after 2000 as the main subjects who want to create a ‘goblin ear’ shape. Early last year, I created elf ears for a celebrity and it quickly became a trend. More and more people are coming to me for surgery,” Yu said. In this type of surgery, the doctor will create the shape by injecting or extending the earlobes so that the earlobes are clearly tilted to the sides and have a clear sharpness. According to Dr. Yu, the main wish of the client when doing “goblin ear” plastic surgery is to make the face look smaller and younger. Dr. Yu added that some people go for “goblin ear” surgery because when viewed from the front, their normal ears seem to disappear, making the overall face look bigger, or there are people because the ears are too big. so small they can’t tuck their hair behind their ears. However, Dr. Wang Jiangyun at the 3rd People’s Hospital in Zhengzhou city in Henan province warned that ear surgery could leave clients with infections, complications or even abnormal ears. symmetrical with the face. The plastic surgery market in China has grown rapidly from 64.8 billion yuan ($10.1 billion) in 2015 to nearly 177 billion yuan ($27.7 billion) in 2019. This number makes China the country with the fastest growing plastic surgery industry in the world. The annual growth rate of the cosmetic industry in China is 28.7% compared with the global average of 8.2%, according to data released by Deloitte Consulting in January.

When beauty standards change, the image of 3 standard measurements that often appear in the media is no longer considered by women as a ‘perfect body’ as before.
Image of sexy women, hot body is no longer a factor to attract female customers in China, according to Jing Daily.

In the past, this glamorous style was often used in commercial campaigns, to promote sales. An analysis by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media found that female models are four times more likely to appear in revealing clothing than male models. “Perfect body” no longer refers to hot models, 3 rounds of standard when many people’s conception of beauty has changed. Photo: Jing Daily. A good example is the lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret. In the past, Victoria’s Secret products were targeted at certain customers, so they did not adjust or add large sizes – that is, the universal women’s sizes. To protest, many groups of women with typical European and American physiques once protested in front of the brand’s store. The response shows that the opinion of the majority is changing, forcing brands to no longer label “perfect bodies” with only those with slim, slim bodies. Earlier this month, a short film from cosmetic company SK-II was released, showing swimmer Liu Xiang – who once entered the world record – facing a sea monster. The image represents the obsession of society in general and women in particular about appearance, rather than what they can do. “Our looks can be judged in a second, but our achievements are what lasts a lifetime,” Liu said in the film. Becoming hot and eye-catching is not a goal many women pursue, so brands also need to change in their customer approach strategies. Photo: VS. According to a YouGov study, 53% of Chinese surveyed in 2021 say they completely agree with the statement “women and men are equal”. In 2015, this rate was 42%. A survey by Ipsos China found that factors such as happiness, dignity, self-confidence and kindness were considered the most important to a woman’s beauty. “Sexy and hot elements are not ranked highly, they are seen as characteristics that make women more attractive,” the report pointed out. The study also revealed that 65% of Chinese respondents consider youthfulness an important factor in enhancing a woman’s beauty. The “No Body is Nobody” advertising campaign celebrates all body shapes and sizes in China. This helps explain the huge growth of the plastic surgery industry in the country. Ironically, young women are the ones who follow this trend most, as they see beauty as a way to boost their careers. According to Deloitte, China’s plastic surgery industry was valued at $27 billion in 2019 and is expected to reach $48 billion by 2023. However, touching cutlery in areas such as buttocks and breasts to look suggestive. Feeling unpopular by going to create double eyelids, making the appearance more youthful. In addition, the growth of the Chinese lingerie market, including wireless bras, also reflects the comfort and beauty factor that comes first. Of course, looks are still important and brands still need to consider the differences between generations. However, brands need to realize that the sexualization of women in media images is not a shortcut to market success.

Mr. Vien Long Binh was still diligently researching hybrid rice until the last days of his life. Photo: CNS. The following article by Christina Jiang- a Chinese international student studying in the UK about the merits of professor-academician Yuan Longping, was published in 2019 in the newspaper. The Oxford Scientist. Jiang wrote: A few weeks ago, on October 1, 2019, something quite strange happened in my house: Our whole family had dinner next to the TV screen! It was the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, in 1949, after years of conflict and political instability. While we were reviewing the parade that morning and the gala dinner that lasted until midnight, my parents and grandparents started talking about Chinese history and culture. In 1973, Mr. Vien Long Binh was the first to develop hybrid rice and achieved hybrid dominance in rice. Hybrid dominance is where progeny hybrids of two different parents are produced with difficulty but are more productive and grow faster. The conversation eventually turned to the Chinese, especially scientists, who are quite famous at home, but barely known abroad. I felt very ashamed when I realized that out of all the names they were mentioning, I didn’t recognize any though sure, I had vaguely heard of them but couldn’t remember any. what. The great merit of agronomist Vien Long Binh helped the once-poor and most populous country in the world overcome hunger. Photo: CRI. The conversation continued until everyone talked about a special man: Vien Long Binh. Again, I don’t know what he did, but after listening and learning more about him, I understand why the people of this country respect him so much. When you start thinking about scientists, what do you usually think of? For me, those are big fields like physics, chemistry or medicine. And Mr. Vien here works in an industry that I didn’t even realize was considered science. He is an agronomist, a scientist active in the field of agriculture. Whether he did not cure a rare disease or discover fundamental truths about the universe, I think what he has achieved is equally important. Due to the self-pollinating nature of rice plants, hybridization is considered impossible because self-pollinating species have to undergo a long process of selection. Thus, all the inferior traits are removed and only the superior ones are left, which is detrimental to hybridization. But Mr. Vien Long Binh proved this wrong. He used a male sterile wild rice variety and produced a rice that was up to 20% more productive. Since then, its productivity has continuously increased. Currently, 50% of rice in China comes from agronomist Vien Long Binh’s hybrid varieties and produces 60% of the country’s total rice production. An estimated 300 billion kilograms of the rice varieties created by Mr. Vien have been planted in the past 20 years, and its yield growth alone is more than enough to feed an additional 60 million people. “Father of hybrid rice” Vien Long Binh cut his hair at a familiar salon in Trường Sa, Hunan province. Photo: Global Times. Those who have been interested in China’s long history of development will see why the topic of hybrid rice has attracted so much attention and become such a big deal. And that is also what prompted Mr. Yuan Longping to embark on his research career in response to one of the greatest disasters of the 20th century, the greatest famine in China. The disaster that left at least 36 million people starved to death began in 1959, when the Great Leap Forward was unleashed with misguided policies and natural disasters, leading to a food shortage crisis. on a nationwide scale. Although he has been working and producing results since the 1970s, it is only in the past 20 years that Mr. Vien Long Binh’s efforts have been recognized to a higher level. He was awarded the World Food Prize in 2004 and the Confucius Peace Prize in 2012. In 2019, at the age of 89, he continued to work, devoting his life to developing rice with higher yields and more difficult growing conditions. There are varieties that can grow in very arid conditions in Africa and may even one day grow in salt water. Hybrid rice varieties have since been grown in many countries in Africa, the Americas and Asia, providing food for areas at risk of famine. Because of his contribution, Mr. Vien was dubbed the “Father of Hybrid Rice” by the Chinese media. In the world’s most populous country, there are now at least four famous landmarks and a university named after him. Professor-academician Yuan Longping born on September 7, 1930 is a famous Chinese agronomist, known for creating the first hybrid rice varieties in the 70s of the last century. He won the China Preeminent Science and Technology Prize in 2000, the Agriculture Prize and the 2004 World Food Prize. Before his death, he was still the leader of the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center. He is also a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a former associate of the US National Academy of Sciences. Mr. Vien Long Binh also served as chief advisor to FAO in 1991.

Gigabyte products are boycotted in mainland China (Image: Handout) In an advertisement for its latest laptop model, Gigabyte Technology Co., which specializes in motherboards and graphics processing equipment, claims that it manufactures its products in Taiwan, where Quality control is very strict. “Unlike other brands that choose low-cost and low-quality manufacturing contracts in China, Gigabyte Techonology is committed to producing high-quality and high-configuration laptops” – the advertisement said – “As a Taiwan-based laptop and components manufacturer, we make sure that 90% of our laptops are made in Taiwan.” The ad immediately caught the attention of the Communist Youth League of China. They posted a screenshot of the ad on Weibo on May 11, with the words: “Gigabyte, what makes you so brave?”. The Youth Union, which has nearly 16 million followers on Weibo, in March also criticized the Swedish brand H&M for refusing to buy cotton from Xinjiang, after several Western countries raised many accusations. human rights obligations in this region. Gigabyte, which has operated a factory in China’s industrial center Ningbo since 2003, immediately apologized after the ad. The company said in a statement that it has always supported the “One China” principle – Beijing’s political stance that recognizes mainland China and Taiwan as part of China. “Some of the content recently posted on our official website goes against reality, an incident that happened due to lack of management from within the company” – Gigabyte wrote on Weibo on May 11 – “We I have production lines all over mainland China, accounting for 90% of our production. Gigabyte prides itself on quality made in China.” However, this quick apology was not enough to calm the anger of the Chinese online community. “You don’t have a chance anymore” – a Weibo netizen commented on Gigabyte’s post – “Seriously, don’t waste your energy. You have crossed the red line.” By the end of May 11, Gigabyte products had disappeared from most Chinese e-commerce platforms. The search term “Gigabyte” returned no results on JD.com and Suning. Gigabyte’s official store on Tmall – an online sales platform operated by Alibaba Group Holding – no longer catalogs products. Alibaba, JD.com and Suning were not immediately available for comment. Gigabyte’s share price fell nearly 20% between May 11 and 12.

Over time, gamers and computer users have suffered from a shortage of high-end graphics cards due to the need to buy GPUs from cryptocurrency operators. Now, a new cryptocurrency called Chia will most likely cause similar problems for the storage drive market. According to the South China Morning Post , hard drive prices in China have risen sharply as miners rushed to mine and sell this cryptocurrency. “The price of hard drives keeps going up” Unlike Bitcoin, which consumes a lot of electricity and energy to process complex algorithms, Chia is mined based on a consensus algorithm and is one of the currencies advertised as being environmentally friendly. A Bitcoin mining facility in China. Cryptocurrency Chia aims to reduce environmental impact. Photo: Bloomberg. The founder of Chia is Bram Cohen, who is also a BitTorrent developer. Cohen said he would usurp the outdated industry with increasingly slow and costly documentation capabilities. Although Chia has not been officially traded on the market and only came into operation on May 3, the “miners” have rushed to buy and stock up a series of HDDs and SSDs. According to SCMP, panic purchases can lead to hard drives shortages, high prices and scarcity. On China’s Taobao and JD.com e-commerce platforms, large enterprise hard drives have been sold out. “There have been a lot of people asking to buy a large number of hard drives to exploit Chia in the past few days,” said a customer care worker at the online store Taobao of two major brands Seagate and Western Digital said. Hard drives were sold out on Chinese e-commerce sites. Photo: Weibo. Most business-class hard drives with more than 8TB of storage have already been sold, not sure when new products will be available, the vendor says. According to the manmanbuy.com A Chinese website that evaluates and compares product prices on popular e-commerce platforms, the price of a Western Digital hard drive with 12 TB of storage in February before The increase was 2,188 yuan (about $ 337). On April 8, the corresponding drive price increased to 3,499 yuan ($ 538) on JD.com. Seagate’s hard drive with 8 TB of storage before April 14 cost 1,150 yuan, but has since risen to 2,160 yuan, according to manmanbuy.com . Cryptocurrency miners Chia in China buys bulk hard drives in bulk at the store. In Huaqiangbei, the world’s largest electronics market in southern China, Shenzhen, some vendors said that they now only have a hard drive with less than 4 TB of storage and they don’t know when This situation has just changed. This person also confirmed that the price of a 4 TB hard drive will be a bit higher than the 700 yuan she used to sell before, because the demand from customers is growing. “At peak times, the prices of hard drives will be at least 60% higher than normal. The prices have come down a bit recently, but for now they are still around 50% higher, ”said a supplier named Chen. The topic of hard drive scarcity has become a hot topic, attracting a lot of attention and discussion on Chinese social networking site Sina Weibo, with tags attached to articles such as “rising hard drive prices” and ” Hard drive prices doubled in 10 days. ” “That’s it all, first the graphics card craze, then you guys switch to the hard drive. Now I can only buy one computer case,” said one netizen. on Weibo. Chia’s further goal In recent years, the increasing popularity and demand for computation has increased the value of virtual currencies like Bitcoin. Cryptocurrency mining has become popular and familiar to many people with knowledge of technology and computers. Although the Chinese government does not recognize Bitcoin as a legal currency, the country does not completely ban Bitcoin mining. According to an article recently published in Nature in April, China accounts for about 70% of all Bitcoin mining activities worldwide. Bitcoin mining currently consumes a lot of energy, leading to concerns about overuse of coal-fired electricity. Photo: DW. The increase in electricity consumption related to cryptocurrency mining has also caught the attention of Chinese regulators, as the country is making efforts to save energy and reduce pollution. environment. The leader of Inner Mongolia, the major Bitcoin producing region in northern China due to cheap electricity prices, said they would close all Bitcoin mining pools by May. The global Bitcoin mining network consumes about 113.88 TWh of electricity per year. If ranked as a country, Bitcoin would be the 33rd electricity consumer in the world, out of total consumption by the Netherlands and the Philippines, according to Cambridge’s Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index.

Only one of the lifeboats escaped the shipwreck has returned to search for survivors.

In the dark, rescuers found a young Chinese man clinging to a wooden door, trembling but alive. It was Fang Lang, one of six Chinese who survived the tragedy and the rescue that later inspired a famous scene in the 1997 Hollywood blockbuster “Titanic”. Titanic was the largest ocean-going ship in the world in the 1910s. It was described as “invincible fish” before sinking in the Atlantic in 1912. Photo: Easyvoyage However, miraculous survival is not the end of their trials. Within 24 hours of arriving at the immigration screening station on Ellis Island, New York, they were deported from the United States for a controversial law banning mainlanders from immigrating in the country. According to the BBC, 6 men disappeared from history to the present day. A documentary film has just been released on the mainland titled “The Six” has clarified their identity and life, 109 years after their fateful trip. The film unfolds the story outside of the legendary Titanic, a story shaped by racism and anti-immigration policies that are gaining special attention following the recent wave of persecution of Asians in the United States. Who are the 6 Chinese survivors? The men were identified as Lee Bing, Fang Lang, Chang Chip, Ah Lam, Chung Foo and Ling Hee. They are believed to be sailors coming to the Caribbean to work. Arthur Jones, British filmmaker and director of The Six, told the BBC that they were known as a group, not as an individual. A ticket listing the names of eight Chinese guests aboard the Titanic. 6 of them survived the shipwreck tragedy. Photo: LP Films The names of the Chinese survivors were on the list of passengers on the Titanic. Articles covering the sinking of the Titanic also briefly mentioned them. However, according to historians and researchers, unlike other survivors who had been praised by the media, this group of Chinese people was vilified for their anti-Chinese views in the West in the early 20th century. For example, in a report published a few days after the sinking, The Brooklyn Daily Eagle called the Chinese survivors “creatures” that rushed into the lifeboats “at the first sign of danger. and hide under the seats. However, research by the documentary production team shows that this claim is false. They built a replica of the Titanic’s lifeboat and found that it was impossible for the Chinese men to hide underneath without being spotted. “I think, we see the same thing today. We are seeing immigrants turned into scapegoats,” commented director Jones. Lifeboat took survivors away from the sinking area of the Titanic in April 2012. Photo: Easyvoyage Other media have even accused the Chinese of dressing up as women in order to be given priority on boarding the lifeboats. But Tim Maltin, the Titanic historian, says there is no evidence that the survivors of the Chinese had either stowed away or disguised themselves as women. Mr. Maltin believes, these are stories made up by the press and public opinion after the event. Rumors may stem from the stigma attached to many male survivors, as the vast majority of the general public believes that women and children should be given priority in the rescue. According to the historian Maltin, Chinese men tried to help other survivors. Fang Lang, who tied himself to a floating door in the sea, later steered the lifeboat that helped bring many people to safety. What happened to them after the crash? Rejected by the US, six Chinese men were sent to Cuba. They quickly made their way to England, where there was a shortage of sailors as many British sailors enlisted in World War I. (From left to right) Three of the Chinese guests who survived the tragedy with the Titanic were Ah Lam, Fang Lang and Ling Hee. Photo: LP Films Chang Chip became more and more ill after the fateful night and eventually died of pneumonia in 1914. He was buried in an unmarked grave in a London cemetery. The remainder worked together in Britain until 1920, when the country experienced a post-war recession and anti-immigrant sentiment surged. Some are married to British women and have children. However, anti-immigrant policies force them to leave the country without notice, leaving their relatives behind. “It’s not their fault. All these families have been divided because of politics, which they really don’t have any control over,” said director Jones. Lee Bing immigrated to Canada, while Fang Lang, after taking a train between Britain and Hong Kong for many years, became a citizen of the United States, the country that once rejected him. Similarity between history and today Tom Fong, son of Fang Lang was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA almost half a century after the sinking of the Titanic. His family surname has many different spellings in English. For decades, Fong was unaware of his father’s experiences aboard the legendary ship, dubbed “unsinkable”. “My father never mentioned it. At least not to me or my mother,” said Fong. Tom Fong was not told by his father – Fang Lang about what he experienced. Photo: LP Films Mr. Fang died in 1985, at the age of 90. Only 20 years later, his son was revealed by a family member that the father had survived the terrible shipwreck. Fong thinks his father may have kept it a secret because of his hurt and discrimination. “There was a lot of information saying that they were sneaking under the boat and disguised as women … stories like that were widely spread at that time,” Fong stressed. As The Six’s team traces the descendants of survivors, many of them still hesitate to share stories of stigma that family members experienced a century ago. Over the past 100 years, the hostility suffered by the six Chinese survivors has been eerily repeated in the midst of anti-Asian racism arose in today’s pandemic scene. In the US alone, there have been thousands of abuse cases reported in recent months, ranging from spit, verbal harassment to violent assault. Fong decided to share his family’s story in the hope that everyone will learn the truth about the Chinese survivors of the Titanic disaster and reflect on current events. “Because if you don’t know history, it will repeat itself,” he asserted.
