Mr. Negi has personally turned the barren land in the cold desert of Himachal Pradesh into a green oasis. (Source: YouTube) In 1977, the Government of India began an ambitious program to reduce the negative effects of desertification in the hot and cold deserts of this Asian country. Mr. Anand Dhawaj Negi was working in the finance department in charge of the Desert Development Program at the time and had seen millions of dollars spent with no real results. Whenever he asked the scientists and program officials about the results, the answer was always that they lacked the technology to grow any sustainable crops in harsh environments. desert . The son of a farmer himself, Negi was tired of excuses and took a leave of absence in 1999 to fix the problem himself. In 2003, he decided to quit his job to focus all of his energy on his growing desert oasis. Mr. Negi has personally turned the barren land in the cold desert of Himachal Pradesh into a green oasis just for everyone, especially the farmer struggling in the region, seeing desert reclamation as entirely possible. It was not an easy thing to do, but the former official knew what he had to do and had the ambition and patience to get through it. Mr. Negi’s first attempt failed as the seeds did not have enough water to grow. He overcame this first challenge by planting by contour, tilling the soil along a consistent height to capture rainwater and reduce soil erosion. At the same time he works with the local community to create irrigation canal The shallows channel runoff from glaciers about 25km away. After witnessing this process, the local irrigation department also began to cooperate. “The irrigation department supplies water to this area. Before that, water was not provided until before June. I connected to the Kuhls area and managed to get a water supply in April and May. When we did, the Irrigation Department also cooperated and ensured a regular water supply here,” Mr. Negi told Down to Earth. But water is just one of the challenges this frigid desert region poses. Sandy soil lacking nutrients is another problem. To provide enough nutrients for the crops he wanted to grow, Mr. Negi started a farm with about 300 Chigu goats and mixed their manure with earthworms to effectively double the nitrogen content of the soil. . This also helps the clover hectares he planted around the oasis to thrive. In the past, clover would fade away as new plants grew. It was the clover growing area that overcame the problem Mr. Negi had at first, a rodent attack. These species will come to eat the delicious plants, so the farmer must plant clover in the legume family around the more valuable crops. Because hares love clover, when there is an abundance of this plant, they don’t bother with other plants. Since starting his job in Himachal Pradesh, Mr. Negi has spent all his money experimenting with combining local farming techniques with more scientific farming methods. It’s a laborious process, but over time the tree mortality rate drops from about 85% to just 1%. After proving that valuable crops such as peas, potatoes, green beans, apples and apricots could be grown even in harsh desert environments, the former official began to focus on long-lasting greenery. years, as he considers them essential to combat climate change in the region. “My first priority here is reforestation. Fake acacia is the most planted. Then there are willows and wild apricots. As for fruit trees and other crops, including green beans, I planted them only as a model for people to replicate,” said Mr. Negi. With just the help of two volunteers, Mr. Anand Dhawaj Negi transformed a cold desert area of more than 90 hectares into a green oasis, receiving praise from both locals and scientists. People come from far and wide to witness this real-life miracle, some buying Negi’s natural fertilizer to grow their own crops and others bringing their livestock to eat clover, the fodder for livestock. cattle are considered the best in the region. Mr. Anand Dhawaj Negi has turned a cold desert area of more than 90 hectares into a green oasis. Sadly, Anand Dhawaj Negi, the desert healer, passed away last month at the age of 74 from a stroke. He will be remembered as a local hero and the green oasis project hopes to be preserved as a reminder that nothing is impossible. Negi’s family intends to continue his work, but has asked the government to take responsibility for the oasis and help the family in its conservation. Virender Sappa Negi, Mr. Negi’s wife, told The Better India news site: ‘Before he said goodbye to us, he planned to plant some evergreen or conifers such as pines and deciduous trees. We want to fulfill these last wishes of his. In addition, we want the state government to take responsibility for this oasis so that his work can inspire future generations.” Anand Dhawaj Negi has become one of the many Indian legends who devoted their lives to afforestation like Uttarakhan’s “Tree Man” or Aditya and Poonam Singh.

The fire of the chemical ship X-Press Pearl off the coast of Sri Lanka in May is expected to leave the island nation facing an environmental disaster for decades, according to the BBC.
The X-Press Pearl has been on fire off the coast of Sri Lanka for several days. Black smoke billowed from the ship and rose high in the sky, still visible from a few kilometers away.

A month after the fire, the X-Press Pearl now lies dormant in a semi-submersible state off the coast of Sri Lanka, its hull resting on the sandy bottom of the shallow sea. The X-Press Pearl burned for 13 days off the coast of Sri Lanka. Photo: BBC. Although the fire on board has been extinguished, the problems stemming from the fire are just beginning. Many stacked chemical containers are still stuck on the ship. Many of these barrels have leaked and soaked into the water, raising concerns about marine life being poisoned by the chemicals. In addition, tons of microplastics have washed up on nearby local beaches. Hundreds of tons of engine fuel sealed in the sunken hull is also likely to leak into the sea. In addition to the environmental threats, the X-Press Pearl ship fire also had devastating consequences for local communities, according to the report. BBC . Indigenous fishermen lose their livelihood overnight and may suffer the consequences for years to come. “We are fishermen, we have to go to the sea every day. We can only make a living by going to sea, otherwise our whole family will starve,” said Denish Rodrigo, who lives on the Sri Lankan coast. with BBC . Billions of microplastics One of the most striking features in the photos documenting the X-Press Pearl fire disaster is the many small round plastic beads spilling from the ship. The number of pieces of plastic is so much that the naked eye can see them when they are next to each other. These microplastics are the main ingredient of most plastic products on the planet. Large amounts of microplastics from the X-Press Pearl ship could threaten the Sri Lankan ecosystem. Photo: BBC. “There were about 46 different chemicals on that ship (X-Press Pearl),” Hemantha Withanage, a Sri Lankan environmental activist, told the BBC. BBC . “But what we’ve been able to see most clearly so far are tons of microplastics.” Since the end of May, pieces of plastic from the X-Press Pearl have washed up on the beaches of Negombo city on the west coast of Sri Lanka. Locals also reported dead fish floating around because of ingesting microplastics. Normally, plastic takes between 500 and 1,000 years to completely decompose. The aforementioned microplastics may have been pushed by ocean currents to the coasts around Sri Lanka or even beyond. “Our whole family will starve to death” For fishermen in Negombo, their concern isn’t just about ingesting microplastics in their fish, but the possibility that they won’t be able to catch any fish. Local authorities have issued a fishing ban in the area affected by the fire. This means that many fishermen have lost their entire source of income and livelihood overnight. “Fish species grow on coral reefs in the area, and authorities say those areas have been destroyed by the effects of dangerous chemicals. Now there is no choice but to jump into the sea naturally. death,” said Mr. Tiuline Fernando, who has been a fisherman for the past 35 years BBC . Many fishing families in Negombo struggled to make ends meet because they lost their livelihood overnight. Photo: BBC. The Sri Lankan government is demanding compensation and insurance from the owners of the X-Press Pearl. However, locals do not expect that money to be used to support them. The local fishermen’s association said it needed help from the whole community. “It’s not just us (fishers) but many other related industries are also affected,” explained the president of the indigenous fishermen’s association Densil Fernando. “Suppliers of nets, engines, boats and oil are involved in fishing operations. Thousands of jobs related to the fishing industry are being affected,” said Mr. Fernando. Chemical pollution The most lasting impact from the fire is believed to be a problem of chemical contamination. Activist Withanage said some of the hazardous elements found on board the X-Press Pearl were nitric acid, sodium dioxide, copper and lead. When mixed with water, these elements enter the internal organs of local sea creatures. Small fish can die immediately from poisoning, but large fish are more likely to survive, the poison will gradually accumulate in their bodies over time. Toxic marine life washed ashore in Negombo, Sri Lanka. Photo: BBC. Mr Withange said fish, turtles and dolphins had died and washed up on beaches. Many of them have turned green, indicating that the body is contaminated with metals and chemicals. “In a couple of years, if you catch a tuna, there’s a good chance it’s still poisoned,” Mr Withange said. “This chemical buildup is a serious problem.” “People should be informed about this,” he added. “The X-Press Pearl is now a toxic ship. Anything from this ship that washes ashore is very poisonous. People shouldn’t even touch them.”

Because of taxes and bans How tobacco companies are realigning themselves

Status: June 8th, 2021 4:00 p.m.

The big tobacco companies still make billions in profits with cigarettes. But after decades of success, BAT, Altria & Co. are slowly turning around in the face of increasing bans and rising tobacco taxes. They are still running an extremely lucrative business. But the revenues and profits of the large tobacco companies are likely to come under further pressure in the coming years. New restrictions could reduce profits, higher taxes are supposed to increase government revenues in the Corona crisis and will further increase the prices for the “blue haze”. The first increase in tobacco taxes since 2015 is due in Germany. In the spring the governing parties CDU, CSU and SPD agreed on the framework conditions for tax increases . This should generate additional revenues of 11.3 billion by the end of 2025. A good half of this should be collected more through the classic tobacco tax, e-cigarettes should generate tax revenues of three billion euros and less harmful products in the industry should also contribute almost two billion euros. These include tobacco heaters that manufacturers had brought onto the market in recent years. The tax increases are to start gradually from 2022.

“Smoke-free Germany” called for

This is another turning point for tobacco companies after the sale of menthol cigarettes was banned in the EU in mid-2020. But the tax hike does not go far enough for health organizations. Significantly higher taxes are necessary to get people to stop smoking, according to a statement from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ). On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, the non-smoking alliance and the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine (DPG) called for a “smoke-free Germany” by 2040. There should still be a long way to go until then. Tobacco consumption fell by around 30 percent between 2011 and 2020. However, just under a quarter of adults in Germany still smokes.

Billions in income from cigarettes

The tobacco companies, for which Germany is an important but not a decisive market, have been changing direction for years, but Altria, Philip Morris International and British American Tobacco (BAT) continue to make good money with traditional cigarettes. BAT, for example, earned around £ 6.4 billion net last year, a large part of which was paid out to shareholders in the form of a dividend. And the current business forecast for the first half of the year, which was published today, does not read badly from the company’s point of view: The group expects growth of more than five percent for the current financial year. This also exceeds the previous forecasts. According to BAT, products of “new categories” such as e-cigarettes and tobacco vaporizers are more important. According to earlier information, the tobacco giant intends to win around 50 million customers for the vaporizer in the next ten years; the total customer base is currently 150 million. Big competitors Altria and Philip Morris are also well represented in the e-cigarette and tobacco vaporizer business. But without writing off the classic cigarette. Philip Morris Germany, for example, recently increased production at the Dresden plant. Due to temporarily closed borders in the pandemic, the demand for cigarettes from domestic production even increased. The company also saw higher demand for “fine-cut” tobacco. It is used for rolling cigarettes – smokers are increasingly looking for inexpensive alternatives to cigarettes from the pack.

Tobacco vaporizers and cannabis products

The coming years will show how quickly the tobacco companies can change course strategically. Some of the manufacturers want to offer new products without nicotine, but with caffeine. They also work on cannabis products. Further legalization of cannabis could open up new billion-dollar revenue streams for them. However, the pressure on the classic cigarette from the state is likely to accelerate and at the same time burden this process of change on the part of providers. This applies above all to the world’s most important sales market for tobacco multinationals, the USA: According to media reports, the new US government under Joe Biden wants to reduce the nicotine content of cigarettes to such an extent that they should no longer be addictive. In addition, menthol cigarettes could also face a ban in the USA.

Power lines connecting high-voltage poles near the capital Brasilia (Brazil). Photo: Reuters. According to ONS General Manager Luiz Carlos Ciocchi, this could lead to higher electricity prices. However, the situation is still positive when the risk of power shortage or interruption of distribution has not yet occurred. About three-quarters of Brazil’s electricity is generated from hydroelectric plants. This is one of the largest percentages compared to countries in the world. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on May 10 that the country was experiencing the worst water crisis in its history, and warned of major problems with electricity production. The crisis comes at a time of increased demand for energy, as temperatures rise in the coming summer months. Last week, Brazil’s Electricity Supervision Commission approved potential additional measures to meet electricity demand, including increasing the power output of thermal power plants and importing energy from Argentina and Uruguay. Mr. L.Ciocchi said that the government should reserve water in the lakes to meet the needs of the people and maintain the necessary hydropower output.

Modern life, home appliances also have many changes. Not only domestic goods but also imported goods from other countries of all sizes, shapes, sizes … keep up with the trend of consumers. One thing that many people wonder about is that decades ago, how rich families were in the house and what items.

Recently a netizen posted a photo of a living room in the countryside that attracted netizens’ attention. This person wrote: “I found a photo of my family in my hometown taken in 1988 – 1990. Dad said that the family was very wealthy and famous in the area back then. In fact, compared with now, many people will be surprised and do not recognize these items. Because with today’s modern life, the way to decorate and arrange furniture as shown in the picture will not be anything special. However, a few decades ago, the family having a cupboard, television and salon furniture was very luxurious and proved to have money. In addition to wooden furniture, black and white television with antenna was also a rarity. Not all families have enough money to buy a television. Every family that has television is also prestigious and attracts the whole village to watch every night. At that time, Japanese black-and-white and red-shell Hitachi TV sets cost about 7-10 gold pieces, which was the pride of the rich. At that time, television was very rare, only those “super rich” dare to buy to watch. It is also the once-proud pride of conditional homes. In addition to these items, in families with conditions, there are radio VEF 206, Soviet winding clocks, or toad fans, elephant ear fans … Although they are now considered antiques and many The house was only displayed for beauty, but at one time it was expensive, difficult to buy and only with lots of money to own.

Chinh Thang noodle shop in Ngu Xa area is a familiar place for generations of Ha Thanh people over the past 20 years.
Ngu Xa (Ba Dinh district, Hanoi) concentrates many noodle shops. Previously, this area was famous for copper casting.

Summer food Located on Mac Dinh Chi street, Chinh Thang noodle shop is quite easy to find. Around 11am, the shop was full from the house to the sidewalk. Many guests have to wait 10-15 minutes to be served. The shop sells from 9am to 10pm, lunch and dinner time is the most crowded. According to Mrs. Vu Thi Chinh (66 years old), the owner of the shop, in the summer of 2000, when she saw diners mimicking their sweat to enjoy a bowl of pho water, she thought about changing a new dish. During the absence of guests, she rolled uncut noodles with beef and herbs. “When serving, customers like it. I have developed it until now. Rolled pho is like pho, but it is dry and suitable for summer food”, Ms. Chinh shared with Zing . Even though she is over 60 years old, Mrs. Chinh still blows away at her pho. Photo: Quynh Anh. In the early days of the business, the shop sold both cooked beef noodle roll and lemon leaf chicken noodle roll. However, customers who come to eat mostly love the rolled beef noodle soup, so she decided to only sell this type until now. Her noodle soup and bamboo noodle soup have been sold in Ngu Xa area since 1981. By 2000, the shop only sold pho roll and moved to Mac Dinh Chi to take the name Chinh Thang, which was taken from the couple’s name. Thanks to pho, she has raised 3 grown sons and both have master’s degrees. Currently, the youngest son has left his job behind to take over and succeed the family. Despite her high age, her pho manipulation is still very mature and fast. She boasts that she can roll 10 in just 1 minute. So when there are many customers, Mrs. Chinh still goes to the kitchen to help her son. To save time and meet a large number of customers at the same time, the owner must use a radio to order food with the staff in the kitchen inside. Depends on the dipping sauce With the carefulness in the cooking process and the selection of ingredients, each plate of pho brought to customers is always delicious and hygienic. “If the noodle bowl is important in the broth, the rolled pho needs a dipping sauce to balance it. Every family selling has a recipe for the sauce so my restaurant also has its own flavor. This is the result of a process.” I change to suit the taste of most diners “. A plate of pho roll of 10 is priced at 65,000 VND. Photo: Quynh Anh. Being a meticulous person, all the ingredients for pho roll such as pho cakes, beef, herbs … were ordered by Mrs. Chinh from longtime acquaintances. The shop owner said that the noodle cake must be tough and thin so that it does not break when rolled. If the cake is broken, the fried pho cannot be crunchy. The noodle roll only includes stir-fried beef with lettuce and herbs. Unlike other locations, the restaurant’s beef is a tender cutlet that is sliced into a large size so it is not crumbled. Before the Covid-19 translation, the shop often welcomed many Japanese tourists. They often stop here after finishing their tour and discovery in Hanoi. Introduced by the owner as a regular customer of the restaurant, Mr. Huy Hoang (40 years old) said he had eaten at the restaurant for 7-8 years. “In the past, I lived in Hanoi every week. Later, I moved back to Quang Ninh, so today, I come here to work here and eat to help me eat.” Minh Ha (22 years old) knew about Chinh Thang noodle shop through the introduction of an acquaintance. At first, when she stopped by the restaurant, Ms. Ha thought like many other addresses. However, in the first time, she ate half a plate of pho by herself. “Pho rolled at the restaurant served is still warm, the sauce is rich. The space is clean, although eating on the sidewalk, the neighborhood is empty, so I do not find it inconvenient.” Currently, in addition to pho roll, coming here you can enjoy fried pho, crispy egg noodles, sour pho … with prices from 50,000 to 80,000 VND. Enjoying puffed pho with the restaurant’s dipping sauce will be more harmonious. Photo: Quynh Anh. Customer reviews: Ngoafood: “Compared to other addresses, the noodle rolls here are smaller, but the book is firm. The filling has enough beef and vegetables. The noodle rolls up quickly, but the fried pho serves slowly. I found it to be eaten, not very impressed. “. Ninheating: “A plate of pho roll consists of 10 pieces, served with sweet and sour sauce. The restaurant has fried egg pho, sour noodle is quite delicious”. Linh Le: “Sometimes the restaurant is crowded, the shop owner usually does not accept more customers. Rolled noodle is full, a lot of meat. Sour pho is full of scallion, delicious sauce. However, the restaurant is still slow to change.” Thao Chi Vu: “Rolled pho is quite small. Puff-fried pho and egg-fried noodles are very good. The price is quite good, about 60,000 VND / person is full”. Thuyseatbook: “Lunch and dinner is when the restaurant is quite crowded. The beef eaten with all dishes is sliced into large pieces. The fried noodles are crispy outside, sticky inside”.

Coffee stenophylla is said to have a great taste. Photo: RBG KEW. In the dense rainforest of Sierra Leone, scientists have rediscovered a species of coffee that has disappeared in the wild for decades. This is a plant that can help ensure the future of coffee, which is already affected by climate change. In 2050, climate change halves coffee production On April 19, researchers said, this coffee tree has a name Coffea stenophylla , is able to withstand higher temperatures than Arabica coffee accounts for 56% and Robusta coffee accounts for 43% of global production. Stenophylla has been shown to have a premium taste, similar to Arabica. Botanist Aaron Davis, who leads research on the anti-climate change stenophylla coffee. Photo: Inews. Botanist Aaron Davis, who led the study published in the journal Nature Plants , said, before disappearing, stenophylla plants were grown in regions of West Africa and exported to Europe until the early 20th century. According to Mr. Davis, the stenophylla coffee tree has not been seen in the wild in Sierra Leone since 1954 and in the Ivory Coast since the 1980s. This is given as an evidence. Climate change is a pressing concern for the billion-dollar coffee industry. Many coffee farmers around the world are experiencing the negative effects of this phenomenon. The taste of Arabica is considered excellent and offers a higher price than robusta, which is mainly used for instant and blended coffee. But Arabica has a limited tolerance to climate change, and research has shown that global production of this coffee can drop by at least 50% by mid-century. The fruit of the stenophylla tree is dark black. Photo: Reuters. Unlike the red and sometimes yellow berries of Arabica and robusta, the stenophylla fruit is dark black. The coffee beans are inside the fruit. The stenophylla coffee grows at an average annual temperature of 24.9 ° C, 1.9 ° C higher than Robusta and up to 6.8 ° C higher than that, the researchers said. arabica coffee. Rediscovered stenophylla “proves the future” of the coffee industry Dr Davis said the rediscovery of stenophylla could help “prove the future” of the coffee industry, to support the economies of some tropical countries and provide livelihoods for more than 100 million farmers. people. Stenophylla can be used with minimal domestication, as a high value coffee for farmers in warmer climates. “In the long run, stenophylla provides us with an important resource for breeding a new generation of climate resistant coffee, as it has great taste and good heat resistance. “If historical reports on coffee leaf rust resistance and drought tolerance are believed to be correct, this will be a useful asset for coffee plant breeding”, Mr. Davis added. This study also included the evaluation of 18 coffee tasters on the taste of stenophylla species. A small sample of this coffee bean has been roasted and made into coffee, then enjoyed by a group of coffee connoisseurs. The report showed that more than 80% of the judges were unable to distinguish the difference between Stenophylla and Arabica when tasted. Accordingly, this species has a complex flavor, with a natural sweetness, high average acidity, and a fruity taste when sipping in the mouth. The rediscovered stenophylla grows wild in Sierra Leone. Photo: RBG KEW. From December 2018, Dr. Davis and study co-author Jeremy Haggar of the University of Greenwich and coffee developer Daniel Sarmu searched wild stenophylla in Sierra Leone, where it is historically grown as a coffee tree about a century ago. Initially, they discovered a single tree in central Sierra Leone. They then discovered a healthy population of wild stenophylla some 140 kilometers southeast of Sierra Leone. “Both sites are tropical rainforest, but stenophylla tends to appear on drier, more open areas: ridges, slopes, and rocky areas,” said Dr. Davis. According to Davis, stenophylla is threatened with extinction amid massive deforestation in three countries where it is growing wild: Sierra Leone, Guinea and Ivory Coast. “I think we are extremely optimistic about the future,” said Jeremy Torz, co-founder of the Union Hand-Roasted Coffee special coffee business in East London, which hosts the tasting of the coffee. stenophylla can deliver ”. Dr. Davis hopes one day that stenophylla will be re-grown in Sierra Leone on a large scale. “I think within five to seven years we will see stenophylla enter the market as a niche, high-value coffee, and then I think it will be more popular,” he said.

The previous travel note shared with you our travel notes in Xichong Village, Wuyuan.

Xichong Village is a pristine millennium ancient village. It is said that Xi Shi, one of China’s four great beauties, died here. Today, the village still retains many cultural relics related to Xi Shi.

In addition to Xishi, Xichong Village’s beautiful pastoral scenery, well-preserved ancient Hui-style houses, and original folk customs also left a deep impression on us.

PS. For more information about Xichong, you can read my last travel note:At the junction of Jiangxi, Anhui, and Zhejiang, there is an ancient village in secret, where the beauty Xi Shi lives forever

In front of the Yu’s ancestral hall, I met the old man Yu Dakai, a master of Xichong lantern craftsmanship

When we first arrived in Xichong Village, we found a tall and magnificent Yu’s Ancestral Hall at the entrance of the village. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Yu clan in Xichong was a prominent family in Huizhou, with strong clan power and strict patriarchal clan system. Within a few days of traveling in Wuyuan, this can be regarded as the most magnificent, most complete, and most exquisitely carved ancestral ancestral building I have ever seen. Now it is also a national key cultural relics protection unit.

Originally, we came to this pristine village by accident. We didn’t expect that such exquisite ancient buildings were still hidden. At that time, we felt that this trip was a great value!

PS. Regarding the specific content of Yu’s Ancestral Hall, you can read my last travel note:There is a water jail in the ancient village of Huizhou, which punishes the woman who has come out of the wall, and she feels terrible even when she comes close

When visiting the Yu’s ancestral hall, we saw many lanterns hung in the ancestral hall, which was very beautiful. It happened that two villagers were walking out carrying lanterns. We ran over to talk and knew that this was a unique handicraft in Xichong Village, called Xichong lanterns!

In the Yu’s ancestral hall, we also found that the Xichong lantern has won the gold medal of the National Folk Lantern Competition.

After walking out of the ancestral hall, we discovered that the trail leading to the village was covered with lanterns on both sides. Each of these lanterns has a different shape, including square, rhombus, parallelogram, hexagon, rice-shaped, pagoda, and so on.

There is a seven-story six-sided pagoda-shaped lantern that is really beautiful, with poems and paintings written on each side, which is very elegant. The carvings on the tower are all hollow. The most amazing thing is that there is a revolving lantern inside, but unfortunately the photos did not show the feeling of revolving lanterns.

After walking around the village, we walked out of the village again and came to the pond at the entrance of the village. There is a wooden plank road in the pond at the entrance of the village. The plank road is also full of colorful lights. We met Master Yu who we met just outside the ancestral hall.

Master Yu’s full name is Yu Dakai, who was born in 1946 and is 75 years old this year. But he is so spirited, he really can’t tell his actual age at all! It can only be said that the beauty Xi Shi chooses to be this place of death, and the landscape is too supportive.

Master Yu told us a lot about the history of Xichong lanterns. The traditional handmade craftsmanship of Xichong lanterns has been around for more than 500 years, but for 50 to 60 years, no one has made them again. In the past few years, the village has re-convened the elderly in the village to dig out and sort out the craftsmanship of making lanterns, and this has reappeared in people’s vision.

Xichong lanterns are made of bamboo stents, and all the steps are handmade. The lanterns have different shapes and different patterns, but they are all composed of objects related to Huizhou elements, such as archways, pavilions, seven-story towers, horse head walls, fish tanks, vases, and so on.

Master Yu told us that there will be a lantern festival in the village at night, which is more beautiful. Unfortunately, our decision to come to Xichong Village was made temporarily. We didn’t arrange our accommodation in advance. I was afraid that we would not be able to call the car back to the county seat later, so we had to leave early.
