On June 9, the 21st Annual Meeting of the 2021 Yabuli China Entrepreneurs Forum was held in Yabuli, Heilongjiang. Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD Co., Ltd. attended the meeting and delivered a speech.

Wang Chuanfu said that persistence is a very important characteristic of entrepreneurs, but persistence has many difficulties behind it. BYD has a green dream since its establishment, which is the responsibility and mission of the company. In 2008, BYD put forward three dreams: solar energy, energy storage, and electric vehicles.

“We made a vision film in 2008. After the film was shot, many people couldn’t understand it. Because in 2008, when we talked about electric vehicles and energy storage power stations, everyone was shaking their heads. When BYD entered electric vehicles, our stock price dropped. 40%, but we did not give up, we are still sticking to it. This is BYD’s vision and we have been sticking to it.”

Wang Chuanfu pointed out that 72% of China’s oil depends on imports, and 70% of the imported oil comes to us ashore through the South China Sea. Of all the oil in China, 70% is used for transportation a year, and our cars consume 70% of our oil in China. It can be seen from the three 70% that electric vehicles must be developed vigorously. China has more urgency to develop electric vehicles than any other country. Therefore, as an entrepreneur, we have no rights. We know that this is a responsibility, and we can only solve it with technical methods

Why do some people choose a Japanese car after buying a car for the first time, and then no longer choose a Japanese car when changing cars? Although Japanese cars have a strong performance in the domestic automobile market, they have been accompanied by many controversies, including thin skin, unsafe, high-speed drift, etc. In fact, the real shortcomings of Japanese cars are not here. Next, let’s talk about the advantages and disadvantages of Japanese cars.

Disadvantages of Japanese cars

Weak high-end brands

This is an important reason why many Japanese cars are abandoned when changing cars. Compared with the German BBA, the domestic sales of Acura and Infiniti are bleak for Japanese luxury brands. Both the market share and the brand appeal are very weak. Lexus, the only relatively strong Japanese luxury brand, cannot be compared with the Germans in terms of sales and appeal. Therefore, when many people change cars, they want to switch to a luxury brand model because of income growth. Because there are not many models of Japanese luxury brands, they will naturally switch from Japanese to German.

Lack of driving pleasure

Frankly speaking, not all Japanese models lack driving pleasure. Subaru and Mazda have many fun-driving models, but the problem is that almost all Japanese cars with driving pleasure are generally sold models, while Japanese cars sell well. Good models, such as Nissan and Toyota models, lack driving pleasure. The self-priming engine is paired with a CVT gearbox, which is smooth but lacks the sense of paragraph shifting. The chassis is more comfortable, but the handling is average. Generally speaking, Japanese cars are like boiled water, which is cheap to quench their thirst, but they always feel a little bit less tasteful. For young people, they are too weak. Therefore, when changing cars, many people want to change to another one. A car that is fun to drive.

The technology is conservative and lacks a sense of technology

Perhaps because more stability is taken into account, Japanese cars are generally less enthusiastic about the use of new technologies. For example, for luxury brands like German, the interior design is more technological than one, and the car system is more dazzling. Cool, but many Lexus models don’t even have a Carplay. Turbocharging, dual clutch and other technologies, Japanese cars are also relatively conservative in application, which also makes many young people not interested in Japanese cars.

4. General exterior interior design

Most of the designs of Japanese models are not amazing. For example, Toyota models and Nissan models are less attractive than German models of the same level.

General interior materials

Compared with American cars, domestic cars, and French cars, Japanese cars tend to be stingy in interior materials, with more hard plastics, and the interiors have a general sense of luxury.

Advantages of Japanese cars

Good fuel economy

Many people say that Japanese cars are fuel-efficient but have poor safety. This is completely false. Today’s most fuel-efficient models are actually Volkswagen’s turbocharged and dual-clutch models, followed by Japanese cars. In addition, in terms of safety, except for Honda, other brands of Japanese cars are not inferior to the public in terms of safety.

Good comfort

Japanese cars generally prefer comfort tuning, and they value the ride comfort of the second row. Whether it is the height of the platform protrusion, the tuning of the suspension and the powertrain, etc., they tend to give passengers a better riding experience.

Low failure rate

Although only changing glass water for ten years is an exaggeration, whether you admit it or not, Japanese cars do have certain advantages in terms of quality stability due to the adoption of more stable and mature technologies, and lower failure rates bring lower later stages. The cost.

High value preservation rate

The preservation rate of Japanese cars is the highest among all car lines, especially Toyota, Lexus, and Honda. This means that when selling cars, Japanese cars can be sold for tens of thousands of dollars.

Therefore, Japanese cars are stable in quality, fuel-efficient, and comfortable, and are suitable for family cars. However, they lack driving pleasure and sense of technology, and high-end brands have weak appeal. Many people choose Japanese cars after their first car. When you change cars, you will abandon Japanese cars. In fact, when you buy a German car and change a car, many people choose Japanese cars. It is a normal behavior and there is no need to overinterpret it.

Electromobility is picking up speed more and more – also in Germany. Tesla has long been considered the undisputed market leader. But VW is catching up. Experts are already expecting a replacement.

From Till Bücker, tagesschau.de Combating climate change is hardly conceivable without electromobility. In order to remain competitive, the German producers are catching up after initial hesitation – especially Volkswagen. “Let me make one thing clear right away: The battery has won the race,” said VW boss Herbert Diess at a recent event. The battery won. It is the “only remaining option to get traffic CO2-free.” The Wolfsburg-based group is relying on the transformation like hardly any other car manufacturer. The company plans to invest around 35 billion euros in the coming years. Around 70 all-electric models are planned by 2030. 60 percent of all new VW cars should then run on batteries.

Electromobility in Germany is making headway

German drivers also seem to be slowly getting involved with e-mobility – among other things, thanks to purchase premiums from the federal government and many new models. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), more than 13 percent of new registrations in 2020 were purely electric cars or plug-in hybrids that are equipped with a combustion engine in addition to the battery. For comparison: in 2016 it was less than one percent. The rise continues this year as well. In March alone, every tenth new car was battery-electric. The market share of cars with alternative drives (battery, hybrid or hydrogen) is currently 37.6 percent and thus higher than ever, as the KBA announced last week. The most popular brand in the first quarter of 2021 is VW. According to its own information, the group currently has a market share in e-mobility of just over 34 percent in this country.

Tesla is the “benchmark”

Despite its top position in its home market, another group is still number one among electric cars worldwide: Tesla. The market share of the California-based automaker, which announced its quarterly figures on Monday evening, fell in Germany from 30 percent in 2019 to nine percent most recently. From a global perspective, however, boss Elon Musk’s company is still ahead. The company sold last year almost half a million e-cars . That was 36 percent more than in the previous year. In the first quarter of 2021, Tesla delivered 184,800 vehicles – a new record. Above all in what is probably the most important market for electric cars in China, the US group has escaped the Germans. Every third Tesla is sold in the People’s Republic. Even on American roads, there is no getting around the electric pioneer when it comes to e-cars with a market share of 80 percent, as the data from the US new registrations show. “Tesla is an important benchmark for us,” Diess recently admitted. The VW boss is an avowed fan of Musk, and he regularly describes his company as the measure of all things in the automotive world. According to the economic sociologist Andreas Boes, who investigated the effects of the Tesla shock on German industry on behalf of IG Metall, Tesla is the harbinger of a new mode of production. The e-car manufacturer gave the decisive impetus for the change in the automotive industry. “The company from California puts its finger in the wound,” said Boes at the Hanover fair.

Tesla with competitive advantages

But what are Tesla’s strengths? What makes Musk & Co. a pioneer? “Tesla has actually set benchmarks in certain areas,” emphasized Stefan Bratzel, Director of the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) at the Bergisch Gladbach University of Applied Sciences, in an interview with tagesschau.de . Without Tesla, electromobility would not have existed at this speed.

Stefan Bratzel is Director of the Center of Automotive Management (CAM) at the Bergisch Gladbach University of Applied Sciences. Image: picture alliance / dpa Competitive advantages are, for example, the competence in battery technology, the control of their superchargers – i.e. fast charging stations – and their reliability. The German carmakers reacted too late on these points, and there are deficits, especially in the area of charging infrastructure. VW only presented its plan in March to build six so-called gigafactories for the production of battery cells and to set up 18,000 public fast charging points. Another great advantage of Tesla is the special vehicle architecture with its own operating systems and chips. Volkswagen, on the other hand, is buying the software. “That puts Tesla in a position to be better than the German competitors,” said the auto expert. Tesla also has a lead in the production area. You manage to pull up plants within a short time and the degree of automation is also higher.

VW can reach the masses

However, when it comes to innovation in the battery-electric field, VW is catching up a lot and is on Tesla’s heels. In addition, the German group also has pluses. With the modular e-drive kit (MEB) he developed a functional system for the production of e-cars, with which, according to Bratzel, a large number of models can be set up: “Volkswagen is a specialist in rolling out such a strategy for different brands, Segments and regions. ” While Tesla offers a rather narrow model range and has long relied on premium products with the Model S and Model X, the VW Group also includes the brands Audi, Porsche, Skoda and Seat in addition to its own models such as the ID. “VW sometimes takes a little longer to implement an innovation, but can then quickly bring it to the masses via the series,” says Bratzel. The Wolfsburg-based company intends to sell more than a million e-cars annually worldwide by 2025 – including medium and compact classes. Another trump card: VW already has a global production network. Tesla is also trying to build up that – among other things through the new plant in Grünheide – but is still far behind, according to the expert. Advantages of western manufacturers are also the quality of the body, the chassis and the workmanship of the interior.

Will VW become the world market leader?

So could the German carmaker pose a serious threat to Tesla? “If things go well, the VW Group will become world market leader in electric cars in 2022”, Ferdinand Dudenhöffer from the Duisburg CAR Institute recently claimed in an interview with “DER AKTIONÄR”. Expert Bratzel also agrees with this: “The large number of models in particular can mean that Volkswagen has a great chance of becoming the world’s largest manufacturer in 2022 or 2023 even with pure electromobility,” he predicts tagesschau.de . For a long time, Tesla led the field by a large margin. But now there are competitors who could be dangerous for the Californians. It now remains to be seen which new innovations Tesla will bring out in order to maintain the lead: “The race is getting a lot closer – both in terms of innovations and sales figures.”

In the growing e-car business, competition from western companies is fierce – but Chinese manufacturers are catching up. A few even venture to Germany.

From Steffen Wurzel, ARD studio Shanghai A battery factory in Changshu, just under 100 kilometers north of Shanghai. The Chinese e-car company Aiways has the batteries for their electric SUV called U5 assembled here. Robots put the individual parts together on a conveyor belt. The battery packs have a capacity of up to 63 kWh, which means that Aiways cars can travel 400 kilometers according to the manufacturer. Only a few workers stand on the conveyor belt. Most of the work steps run automatically, explains senior engineer Wu Lunbin. “It currently takes nine minutes and 44 seconds to make a battery pack for a car,” he says. “But we will continue to expand our production capacity, that will further increase the pace.”

Lots of bankruptcies and takeovers

In addition to Aiways, the other Chinese electric car start-ups are also self-confident. Of the original hundreds of small companies, around ten have remained after bankruptcies and takeovers, which have now actually brought market-ready electric cars onto the streets. They are called, for example, Li Auto, Xiaopeng, World Champion and Nio . Even if the sales figures of these companies are still very low compared to the established, international large car brands: The e-car start-ups have shaken up the car market in China, says Zeng Zhilin, founder of the Shanghai management consultancy LMC Automotive. “These e-car start-ups are digital through and through. They are brave and dare to sell their cars and use new technologies,” says Zeng. “E-car start-ups like Nio combine classic car technology and new software in a way that traditional corporations cannot.”

“Most difficult market ever”

In the affluent cities along the Chinese coast, the hip electric SUVs from the startup companies are already part of the normal street scene. So far, only a few have dared to go abroad, more precisely to Europe. The Shanghai company Aiways, for example, is trying. It also sells its off-road electric sedans in Germany for just under 30,000 euros if you include the state e-car bonus. “We want to start our business from Europe because that is the most difficult market ever,” says Aiways company founder Fu Qiang. “If we survive in Europe, we can do it anywhere. And with that we show our customers within China: Look here, we have what it takes to sell our products in Europe – we build high-quality cars.”

Aiways founder Fu Qiang wants to sell his cars in Germany over the Internet. Image: Steffen Wurzel Entering the German market is complicated for new car manufacturers: There is fierce competition, high price pressure, and German customers are not considered to be keen to experiment. And: It is time-consuming and expensive to set up a Germany-wide sales network. Aiways simply bypasses the latter point: The Shanghai company sells its cars in Germany online and through a consumer electronics chain that otherwise sells televisions and computers.

Cooperation with workshop chain

For inspections and repairs, Aiways customers are referred to the nationwide active workshop chain Auto -teile-Unger, ATU for short, explains Aiways company founder Fu Qiang. “ATU has enough locations in Germany. They don’t need any new equipment or new mechanics for our cars. The only thing they need is precise instructions on how our cars are serviced.” As far as the number of new cars produced is concerned, the e-car start-ups are catching up, but they are still far behind the established, large car manufacturers. Aiways plans to sell at least 10,000 cars outside of China this year. For comparison: the Volkswagen Group sold around 4.2 million cars last year – in China alone.

With the new fully electric luxury sedan EQS, Daimler wants to make up for the gap to the electric pioneer Tesla. Strong quarterly figures provide momentum. But the US rival has a big lead.

“Tesla Hunters”, “Tesla Fighter” or even “Game Changer”: Industry experts and the media are praising the new fully electric Daimler luxury sedan EQS, which celebrated its world premiere yesterday. The Mercedes-S-Class is by far the most important and prestigious model series for the car manufacturer – a calling card for the car-interested world, with which one wants to present oneself from the best side and at the height of the engineering art. In the autumn of last year, the carmaker had already presented the S-Class with internal combustion engines. But that was yesterday’s world. The future, and actually the present, belongs to electromobility. And here the US competitor Tesla set the pace with its Model S in recent years.

Overslept the future?

According to Daimler’s plans, that should change from now on. “The EQS was developed to exceed even the expectations of our most demanding customers,” says CEO Ola Källenius, promoting the new luxury model. Above all, the management is concerned with catching up on the competition with Tesla at the top. “The importance of the EQS for Daimler’s reputation as an e-car builder is immense,” said industry expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer Deutsche Welle . The new vehicle is both a technology carrier and a symbol of the Group’s ability to innovate. For a long time, critics have accused the group of lacking innovative strength. For too long, Daimler has stuck to the concept of gasoline and diesel cars, while Tesla has long been shaping the future and building a technological lead that needs to be caught up now.

From now on it should go faster

Tesla is also way ahead in terms of sales in the electrical sector. Last year, the Californian company set a new record with almost 500,000 vehicles sold worldwide. In the first quarter of 2021, the share of e-cars in total sales was only ten percent, but this sector is currently growing strongly. According to the current status, Daimler is aiming for a sales share of electrified cars of “more than 50 percent” in its passenger car division by 2030. This includes both all-electric cars and hybrids. According to Källenius, it could also be faster. At the moment you can feel a “strong demand” for purely electric cars and hybrid vehicles, he said at the presentation of the new electric sedan. If you project this momentum into the future, “it may well be that the planning bases that we have had so far are perhaps too conservative, that things can go faster, that things can be more.”

Tesla still has a head start

The fully electric EQS should go on sale from summer. The price is not yet known. Jürgen Pieper, auto expert at Bankhaus Metzler, reckons with a proud price of 150,000 euros. With a range of 770 kilometers and the ability to charge quickly, Daimler’s EQS will be Tesla’s most important challenger, commented Kai Alexander Müller, Barclays auto analyst. The second generation of Tesla’s Model S, announced for this year, should travel 660 kilometers without having to recharge. Nonetheless, Tesla will remain unmatched for longer when it comes to software for communication and entertainment in the car, explained Metzler analyst Pieper. “Even the EQS does not yet offer as much as Tesla in terms of networking and constant software updates.” Nevertheless, the presentation is a success for Daimler: “The EQS is the challenge for pure electric car manufacturers, above all for the US electric car pioneer Tesla, says Stephen Reitman, analyst at Societe Generale.

Operating profit ninefold – investors enthusiastic

The Stuttgart-based carmaker is currently also receiving tailwind from the fresh quarterly figures that were published that morning. Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose to just under 5.8 billion euros in the first quarter. That was more than nine times the first quarter of 2020, which was marked by the outbreak of the corona pandemic – and more than experts had forecast. Daimler has not yet given information on sales and surplus, but it is clear that the group benefited in particular from the strong business in China. Daimler had reported a 22 percent increase in car sales for the first quarter, and sales soared by 60 percent in China alone. Investors like the latest news from Stuttgart. With a plus of almost three percent, the Daimler share leads the DAX.
