Sales increase The chemical industry is raging

As of: 06/09/2021 3:54 p.m.

The third largest German branch of industry has reached the pre-crisis level again. After growth in the first quarter, the chemical industry raised its forecast for the year. The pharmaceutical business in particular is doing better than expected. Despite the rise in raw material prices and delivery problems, the German chemical industry continued on its growth path in the first three months of the year. As announced by the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI), the sector increased its sales by 1.1 percent to 51.3 billion euros compared to the same period in the previous year. Production increased by 0.8 percent. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2020, sales growth was even 3.6 percent.

Again above pre-crisis levels

With the sustained upward trend, the third largest German industrial sector – after the car and machine builders – has already compensated for the corona dent. Production and sales are now back above pre-crisis levels. Above all, exports to EU countries increased. In addition, there was the increasing demand from Asia. The chemical industry was also able to grow in the German home market – thanks to higher prices.

“Hope for a good year in chemistry”

VCI President Christian Kullmann, who is also the head of the chemical company Evonik, was delighted with the development. “The first few months give hope for a good year in chemistry,” he said. “The demand for chemicals and pharmaceuticals is increasing.” The industry association is now even more optimistic about the year as a whole. For 2021, the VCI predicts sales growth of eight percent and an increase in production of 4.5 percent. So far, a plus of five percent in sales and an increase of three percent in production had been forecast.

“The demand for chemicals and pharmaceuticals is increasing.” – VCI President Christian Kullmann Image: picture alliance / dpa

Price increases and corona vaccines as drivers

Strong price increases for the chemical and pharmaceutical products manufactured should make a significant contribution to this. The association is anticipating 3.5 percent higher prices for the year as a whole. The chemical industry is also benefiting from the corona vaccine boom. There are numerous suppliers for the vaccines from BioNTech, Moderna & Co, including Evonik and Wacker Chemie. You act as a technology supplier or as a contract manufacturer.

Worry about delivery bottlenecks

Only supply bottlenecks for materials and intermediate products are dampening the good mood in the chemical industry. “They are now affecting the operational processes of every second company,” warned VCI President Kullmann. However, the situation should ease again in the course of the year. In March, the blockade of the Suez Canal interrupted the supply chain from Asia in the chemical industry. Around 16 percent of chemical imports and 18 percent of exports take this route.

Huge green electricity demand for climate neutrality

In addition, the more stringent climate protection targets are making the industry difficult. “The way there remains in the fog”, said recently Wolfgang Große Entrup, General Manager of the VCI. “For the new goal, our industry needs more electricity than Germany currently consumes overall – as green electricity.” If the industry does not get competitive prices for electricity from renewable energies, it will not manage the energy transition. In spring 2020, the association presented a study in which it considers climate neutrality by 2050 to be technically feasible. For this, however, enormous additional amounts of green electricity are required. By the mid-2030s, the chemical industry’s electricity needs will increase more than tenfold. In addition, the electricity price would have to drop to four cents per kilowatt hour, demanded the VCI. The industry currently pays between eight and ten cents per kilowatt hour.

BASF is pushing ahead

VCI President Kullmann considers the renewed tightening of climate protection targets and the more rapid increase in CO2 prices called for by the Greens in their election manifesto as “irresponsible”. At the annual chemistry conference of the “Handelsblatt”, he warned that those who shackle the industry put the ax to their transformation. Good politics are based on incentives and not on bans. BASF is one of the first chemical companies to commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero on a fixed date. The people of Ludwigshafen want to become climate neutral by 2050. Among other things, one should help huge wind farm in the North Sea that BASF is planning together with RWE . The plant with a capacity of two gigawatts is to supply the Ludwigshafen chemical site with green electricity from 2030.

On April 29, 2021, China launched a 849-ton Truong Chinh 5B missile from the country’s Van Xuong Satellite Launch Center, with the mission of bringing a core module called Thien Ha into Earth orbit. to begin the assembly process of the Thien Cung Space Station.

However, an incident later occurred when the core of a missile weighing up to 20 tons lost control and fell back to the ground at an extremely high speed. According to forecasts by both the US space agency (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) at that time, the missile is likely to fall on May 8-10 – and currently the latest forecasts show. It will fall on May 9. Missile Truong Chinh 5B.
On April 29, at the Van Xuong spacecraft launch center in Hainan province, China successfully launched the first module of the Tianhe space station with the Truong Chinh 5B rocket, marking an important step in the build the country’s own space station. However, instead of falling to a predetermined place in the sea like the previous rockets, the central stage of the Truong Chinh 5B boosters started spinning around the Earth in a low orbit in a state of out-of-control. With a weight of about 21 tons, 30m long and 5m wide, the remnants of the Truong Chinh 5B rocket are flying in orbit around the Earth every 90 minutes / rev, at a speed of 27,600 km / h at an altitude of over 300 kilometer. Since the end of last week until now, this remaining part has decreased altitude by nearly 80km. According to the observations of underground amateur astronomers, this missile is in a very unstable state. Some calculations show that the central floor of the Truong Chinh 5B missile will plunge into the atmosphere on May 8. When it crosses the Earth’s atmosphere, it could be burned, but it is likely that large pieces of the missile will remain and will fall scattered over an area of 160km wide. Worth mentioning, this is not the first time that China’s Truong Chinh 5B missile has fallen into a state of out-of-control during the biosphere. In May 2020, a similar incident happened. Beijing is expected to have at least 10 more similar launches, bringing all additional equipment into orbit, before completing the station by 2022. China’s Truong Chinh 5B missile was launched into orbit on April 29 at the Wenchang launch pad, southern China. . Prior to the US Space Command’s forecast that the 2021-035B Truong Chinh 5B (Long March 5B or Chang Zheng 5B) missile core, called 2021-035B, was capable of falling uncontrollably on Earth on the day. May 8-9, many people questioned: Will Russia or the US plan to use the missile to shoot the core of the Truong Chinh 5B missile, to save the planet’s citizens? On May 6, the US said it was tracking the object’s path, but had no plans to shoot it down. Cosmic garbage Australia currently holds the record as the country that contains the largest space waste in the world. In 1979, the 77-ton American SkyLab space station disintegrated in Western Australia, leaving the area around the coastal town of Esperance splashed by debris. Although no deaths or serious injuries have been reported from being hit by these cosmic debris, it is quite dangerous. Just a year before the fall of SkyLab, a Soviet remote sensing satellite, Cosmos 954, crashed into a barren area of Canada’s Northwest Territory, spreading radioactive debris over several hundred square kilometers. As the Cold War was at its height, the nuclear sensitivity of the Cosmos 954 led to unfortunate delays in locating and cleaning the wreck. Who has to pay for cleaning? International law sets out a compensation regime that applies in many cases of damage on Earth, as well as when satellites collide in space. The 1972 conventions, a United Nations treaty, impose liability for the damage caused by space debris, which includes a regime of absolute liability as they fall to Earth like fragments. crumbs. In the case of Long March 5B, this would impose potential liability on China. The new treaty has only been invoked once before (for the Cosmos 954 incident) and therefore may not be considered a incentive. Of course, this legal framework only applies after the damage has occurred. In 1978, a Soviet nuclear-powered satellite crashed in northern Canada, resulting in a $ 3,000,000 fine for the tundra radioactive cleanup for Canada.

China’s Truong Chinh 5B missile was launched into space from April 29 New arena between America-China This week, the US and China have repeatedly debated over the warning that the remnants of the Chinese Truong Chinh 5B missile could fall back to Earth. While the US has criticized this as the result of irresponsibility and negligence and predicts serious consequences, China has countered that the West is overdoing and the impact of heavier missile remnants. The 20 tons falling back on Earth is nothing serious. Observing the latest incident, world commentators said that, even when the huge remnant of Truong Chinh 5B’s missile fell to the Earth and caused no consequences, the controversy related to the row. Space between China and America will not end either. On the contrary, this is just the opening for a new “arena” between the two leading economies in the world because they are spending sparingly to increase their presence in the universe. The more space we invest and build, the greater the amount of space waste will be, and the return of giant objects from space will no longer be uncommon. Just over last month, the Chinese National Aerospace Agency also kept an eye on a massive cosmic litter. In particular, the International Space Station (ISS) emits the largest space trash ever, which is the 2.9-ton base of 48 nickel-hydrogen panels. It is expected that the trash will spend 2 to 4 years floating in low Earth orbit before it burns into the atmosphere. The consequences of this discharge are not the same as the discharge of the remnants of the Truong Chinh 5B missile because the object of the Chinese missile weighs more than 20 tons, so it is difficult to burn out, leaving the large structure falling on Earth. However, as soon as the ISS station’s discharge was announced, the China Space News website immediately published an article warning the risk of a 2.9-ton retrograde waste block. “Pray for that waste block not to come back and hit the space station”, according to the article on this website. The problem of litter will be as bad as climate change The South China Post (SCMP) newspaper published this month indicated that China is tracking about 20,000 blocks of space waste, 50% more than a decade ago. ” In the end, the consequence may be that, even if there are no more people performing any more space activity, the total amount of cosmic waste will continue to increase, the door to human space will be completely blocked. – Mr. Feng Hao, an aerospace specialist in China, said Mr. Feng Hao, lead author of the report and his colleagues at the Beijing Institute of Space Systems Engineering, said that the situation of the rapid increase in the amount of waste in the orbit of the Earth is very alarming because that floating object can collide with each other. The scenario above will take place soon and worse when China and the US continue to compete in space. Both have ambitious plans to expand the space program over the next few years. Tens of thousands of satellites have been launched, a lot of large-scale infrastructure built in orbit from Earth to Moon. Feng estimates that by 2033, the geostationary orbit will be crowded, meaning that adding more satellites to orbit will lead to a chain collision. Space litter “could become the same important political issue as the current state of climate change,” said a Beijing-based scientist, who did not want to be identified. According to this scientist, when the important orbits do not have many gaps, tensions between Washington and Beijing, the two countries most active in aerospace operations, will become increasingly fierce. “Beijing may criticize Washington for its cosmic emissions, on the contrary, Washington will limit Beijing’s future space missions. This will cause a profound geopolitical impact, affecting all countries on Earth “, emphasized the anonymous expert. Furthermore, when the US-China confronts, international cooperation related to space waste disposal will inevitably be affected. Not to mention, the situation of sharing space waste tracking information between countries is still superficial, partly because the technology used in the universe is related to the military, so no country wants to share it clearly. . “You can imagine this situation as two people sitting in the front row scrambling for the steering wheel while the car is about to crash into the wall,” the Beijing expert explained. China launched the 5B Truong Chinh missile into space, carrying the first module of the Chinese-made Tian Cung space station, from April 29. This missile has a 1-core configuration for propulsion, so the size of this floor is very large. When completing the task of bringing the missile to, the separated core will be disabled and become a giant mass of cosmic trash. The problem is this trash is spinning in uncontrollable Earth orbit. Expected to fall to Earth as early as today (May 8).

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Ngo Duc Thanh, Hanoi University of Science and Technology. (Photo: Bich Lien) That is shared by Assoc. Ngo Duc Thanh, Hanoi University of Science and Technology – a young scientist who has just received the nomination for the Ta Quang Buu Prize in 2021 announced by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Sincere and full of enthusiasm of the scientist who met us, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Thanh said: Global climate change (CC) is a contemporary challenge that humanity is facing. Many human and computational resources are focused by the world to make future climate change scenarios under different assumptions. In 2012, at an international conference in Vietnam led by Assoc. Ngo Duc Thanh co-organized, Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiments (Southeast Asia) project coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiments (Southeast Asia) was established with the goal of sharing computational resources, human resources and promoting research for Southeast Asia. As soon as CORDEX-SEA was initiated, Assoc. Ngo Duc Thanh and his colleagues have embarked on research on simulating extreme temperature and precipitation factors for Southeast Asia. The study focuses on a number of climatic factors for the entire Southeast Asia region such as the number of heavy rainy days, the number of consecutive rainy or no rainy days, the number of days when the temperature is too hot or too cold … The program helped him to be named in the list of nominees for the Ta Quang Buu Award in 2021 – the project “Evaluation of the ability of the RegCM4 model to simulate the extreme indicators of rain and temperature in the CORDEX-Southeast. ASIAN”. According to Assoc. Ngo Duc Thanh, there are currently many models with different parameter configurations that can be used to calculate future climate change for the global as well as for individual regions such as Southeast Asia. However, different models will give different errors in different countries, regions, and times. During more than 4 years of implementation, Assoc. Ngo Duc Thanh and international colleagues conducted 18 simulation experiments to find the most suitable and optimal model configuration capable of representing the extreme climatic factors of rain and heat. area. 18 experiments were also ranked, from which the most optimal set of model parameters were selected, serving the long-term climate change projection until the end of the 21st century. After being announced, the work received the attention of the research community inside and outside the area. By providing the most optimal model parameters for long-term simulation experiments in Southeast Asia, the work is extremely important, helping to save significant resources and computation time. planning future climate change for the entire region. Initial research results are positive, but things have not stopped. Assoc.Prof.Dr. Ngo Duc Thanh said that, along with the results obtained, many big questions were re-opened: What is the cause of the difference in rainfall increase and decrease in different regions of the region? How do changes in the rain temperature regime affect extreme phenomena such as floods, droughts, hot weather …? However, the thing that Assoc. Ngo Duc Thanh feels most confident and confident that it is the handshake association of international scientists. Never before has the inter-country cooperation in the field been so extremely challenging as meteorology and climate change have been so closely coordinated. Talking more about the success of the project, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Thanh said: This is not only an honor for each individual scientist but also an opportunity for the field of meteorology / climate to be “quietly” and Picky learners, workers get more attention from society. Concerned about this field has not been concerned by many people, he expressed: There are very few young people interested in studying this field because this is also a challenging issue. “In recent years, each course has only recruited very few students, leading to this industry often scored relatively low, while the industry is in need of people who are good at math, physics and computer science.” In addition, during his work, he witnessed “inflows of people coming and going” in a number of hydro-meteorological research units, partly due to working conditions and inadequate income. living did not attract them. “We need the push to create a team of high-quality meteorologists that can be dedicated and passionate about the industry. That way can meet the needs of the society, solving practical and urgent problems such as forecasting natural disasters or researching climate change ”, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Thanh shared. /. The Ta Quang Buu Award is awarded annually by the Ministry of Science and Technology to honor scientists who have outstanding achievements in basic research in the fields of natural sciences and engineering. In 2021, together with TS. Bui Minh Tuan, Assoc. TS. Ngo Duc Thanh, a famous meteorologist was nominated for the “Main Award” category of this award. The Awards Ceremony is expected to be held on May 18 – Vietnam Science and Technology Day.

Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said that the third Covid-19 outbreak in April 2021 had affected tourism sentiment. The ministry revised its forecast for total tourism revenue for 2021 to decrease from 1,218 billion baht (equivalent to about $ 27 billion), of which domestic tourism revenue is expected to reach 550 billion baht. from international tourism is 300 billion baht.

The beaches in Phuket are empty of foreign tourists. (Photo: Bangkok Post Office) The Minister of Tourism and Sports of Thailand said that the number of Covid-19 cases per day has increased to more than 2,000 and is not sure how the pandemic will break out, so the previous goal is to attract 6.5 million foreign tourists in 2021 are difficult to achieve. The Thai government currently expects international arrivals by 2021 to be only 3 million to 4 million visitors. Meanwhile, local tourists are predicted to make about 100 million -120 million trips this year, down from 160 million in the previous forecast. However, Thai officials will continue to plan to attract international tourists who have been vaccinated against Covid-19, through a pilot project in the tourist city of Phuket from July 2021. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports will help distribute Covid-19 vaccine to 70% of Phuket’s residents in preparation for international tourists. Regarding the Covid-19 situation in Thailand, today (April 24), health officials of this country recorded a record high number of new cases in the day, with 2,839 cases and 8 more deaths. To date, this Southeast Asian country has recorded a total of 53,022 cases of Covid-19, of which 129 died and 22,327 are under treatment./.

If the rainfall is too heavy, it can lead to flooding, causing serious damage to people and material; But too little rainfall can cause droughts, lack of water for domestic use and destroy crops. Therefore, rain forecasting is always the top concern of meteorologists in the world, ”said Tuan. Although the meteorological industry in recent years has seen a strong development; weather forecasts for 5 days have the same accuracy as the one-day forecast of 30 years ago; … however, according to Mr. Tuan, this does not mean that in the next 30 years, the forecast will be 5 times more accurate than current. “There are big obstacles that the meteorological industry has not been able to overcome. Technically, the computer can help to make forecast bulletins that come monthly or longer, however, the reliability of the forecast report will drop very quickly after 5-7 days ”, said Tuan. . Currently, the theoretical foundations for short-term forecasting (from 1-5 days) have been gradually being finalized. Therefore, the weather forecast for this time period is relatively good. However, atmospheric changes on a longer time scale (from 10 to 90 days) are not fully understood. This is also one of the main reasons why the forecast is not reliable at this time. Those concerns have prompted Mr. Tuan to find laws related to the change of rain from 10 to 90 days, towards expanding the ability to forecast. Continuously from 2013 – 2019, Mr. Tuan went to “decode” the questions: Rain in Vietnam has cyclical fluctuations, especially the 10 – 90 day cycle or not? Are these variations between climatic regions? If rain in Vietnam has a strong fluctuation in a cycle of 10 – 90 days, which large-scale processes lead to the fluctuation of these cycles?, … To answer those questions, Tuan said it took him a year to read and understand the algorithms and build computational programs for large atmospheric data sets over the course of 30 years, in the period since 1980. – 2010. “These are complex algorithms, requiring high programming skills. But due to the lack of support from IT specialists, I encountered many difficulties in handling this problem ”. After the computational results have been obtained, analyzing the physical process based on those results is also a challenge. The reason is that Vietnam’s climate is very complicated, affected by many large circulation systems and has strong differentiation between regions. The characteristics of rain and the mechanism of precipitation in Vietnam still cause a lot of controversy in the meteorological community. Therefore, the selection of important aspects for analysis also requires a lot of time. Mr. Tuan also took another year to analyze all the results. What he collected during this time helped find the oscillation pattern of rain. The physical mechanisms involved in this volatility have also been shown. In particular, he also found a relationship of this oscillation with the occurrence of heavy rains in Vietnam. This brings a lot of value, because heavy rains are considered anomalous and difficult to predict. Tuan’s research is an important theoretical basis to expand the ability to predict rain and heavy rain from 10-25 days. Thanks to these results, by early 2019, his article was published in the Journal of Climate – a climate magazine of the American Meteorological Association. Mr. Tuan is a former student of Physics at the High School of Science and Technology. Because he is always curious about natural phenomena such as storms, tornadoes, thunderstorms, … he decided to enroll in the Department of Meteorology, Hydrology and Oceanography of the University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University. Cabinet. “When I entered school, I found Meteorology more interesting than what I thought. The ideal knowledge of mathematics and physics is quite distant, but it is applied very closely to explain natural phenomena. In addition, I also have access to modern technologies or to process data on mainframe systems. I also had the opportunity to do internships at local observatories and to participate in professional forecasting internships at the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting. There, I played the role of forecasters, directly analyzing to create a forecast newsletter. It was a very wonderful experience for me ”. After graduating from university, he continued to study for masters and doctoral degrees at the University of Science. As a scientist trained in the country, Mr. Tuan assessed that in recent years, the meteorological industry in Vietnam has also had a great development. At the working place Tuan has been equipped with a supercomputer system for training and research. The latest achievements in areas such as remote sensing, data assimilation, high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, … have also been applied in weather forecasting. However, Mr. Tuan also frankly acknowledged, the support of information technology experts to maintain and operate this system well is still limited. Current researchers still have to be in charge of this additional area. Another “separate sadness”, according to Tuan, is loneliness in science. “The computer system started to exist, but for improvement, the human factor remains the prerequisite. In Vietnam today, the number of people who choose to follow the research path in this field is very small ”. The meteorology industry still seems to be “out of the general trajectory of development”, when after nearly 10 years, despite some changes, it is still slow and only motivated by a few individual individuals. There are not many people doing research in the same field, so it is very difficult to find an academic exchange. Part of the reason, according to Tuan, is that the support for young researchers is still relatively low compared to the general level of society. This is likely to lead to a crisis of high-quality human resources in the future. Currently, each training course in the Department of Meteorology of the University of Natural Sciences recruits only about 30-40 targets. While majors require people who are good at both Math, Physics or Programming, … these people often choose very few meteorology. “Right from the source of admission, this discipline has encountered difficulties. When we enroll in schools, students still know very little about the industry and only think this industry is mainly metrology, usually for the population of C because it relates to Geography. The main registration is for aspiration 2, aspiration 3, so they don’t really like and want to stick with the industry ”, said Tuan. According to the young doctor, this industry is still not respected because people still think, “rain and wind is the story of heaven”, seemingly very far away. But in fact, it greatly affects life, economy and society such as planning production activities, forecasting diseases and preventing natural disasters. “I hope in the coming time, the society will know about the Hydrometeorology industry, not only through the image of a young man in” Quiet Sa Pa “anymore. This is an interesting discipline and offers many opportunities for young people to be truly passionate about natural sciences ”.

The leading economic institutes have significantly lowered their growth forecast for 2021. The renewed corona shutdown is delaying the economic recovery, according to the experts. Because of the crisis, they recommend a higher retirement age.

The third corona wave is massively inhibiting the growth of the German economy this year. The leading German economic institutes, the RWI in Essen, the Berlin DIW, the Ifo Institute in Munich, the Kiel IfW and the IWH in Halle have reduced their forecast from 4.7 percent in autumn 2020 to 3.7 percent.

Risk from new mutations

“The new wave of infections and the associated containment measures lead to a downward revision of the forecast for the year 2021 by one percentage point compared to the autumn report 2020,” says the joint report. The first quarter of the current year in particular is weighing on the economy. “Due to the ongoing shutdown, economic output is likely to have fallen by 1.8 percent in the first quarter,” said Torsten Schmidt, Economic Director of RWI. “The development of the pandemic continues to be the most significant downside risk for the forecast,” warn the institutes. There could still be bottlenecks and delays in the delivery of vaccines and tests. New virus mutations could also stop the economy from opening up, which would slow the recovery again.

Better prospects from summer

The forecast is based on the assumption that the current shutdown will continue for the time being and that the last easing will largely be reversed. The institutes do not expect further easing steps until the middle of the second quarter, and the restrictions will then be lifted by the end of the third quarter. “In the course of the easing, we expect a strong expansion in economic activity in the summer half of the year, especially in the service sectors particularly affected by the pandemic,” said Schmidt. The experts emphasize that a strong recovery will set in as soon as the risk of infection has been averted, especially through vaccination. They forecast that the economy should return to normal capacity around the beginning of next year. In the course of the easing from May, the number of unemployed will also decline.

Increase retirement age?

In view of the rising national debt, the institutes are in favor of increasing the retirement age. It would be a challenge to get the state finances back on a solid footing after the pandemic, it said. As the population is getting older, pension insurance plays a major role. A higher retirement age could support the state finances. So far, the federal government has assumed economic growth of three percent. Recently, three industry associations had expressed their cautious optimism about the current economic development in their sectors . The service sector in particular is suffering from the lockdown measures.

At the start of the Hanover Fair, the important industry associations presented their forecasts for business in the current year. You expect a gradual recovery – under certain conditions.

In view of the progressing vaccinations, the German industry expects the economy to pick up significantly in the coming months. In terms of production, he expects “a strong plus of eight percent compared to the previous year,” said the President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), Siegfried Russwurm, at the opening of the Hanover Fair. At the start of the corona-related digital industrial fair, the BDI, the Association of German Mechanical and Plant Engineering (VDMA) and the Central Association of the Electrical and Electronics Industry (ZVEI) presented their annual forecasts.

When will the upswing come?

In the past few months, German industry has been an important driving force behind the economic recovery in Germany. That is why the current forecasts of the three major industry associations were awaited with great excitement. And although the big upswing is likely to be a long time coming, the prospects for the industry are better than feared – provided, according to the unanimous assessment of the associations, that the lockdown measures do not need to be tightened any further. The forecasts are based on the assumption that the previous restrictions will be scaled back in the coming months and that vaccination will be successful.

“No further conditions”

Many companies received significantly more orders again, said BDI President Russwurm. There are already more incoming orders than before the crisis. A prerequisite for recovery is “largely reducing pandemic-related restrictions by early autumn” – and that there are no further requirements for the manufacturing industry. With the help of general practitioners and company doctors, Germany must also become more flexible and speed up when it comes to vaccinating. Russwurm also pointed out that the extended lockdown would have consequences in a number of areas. According to the updated BDI forecast, economic output is likely to increase by three percent in 2021. That is half a percentage point less than initially assumed.

Increased prognosis

The Association of German Mechanical and Plant Engineering (VDMA) has increased its forecast for the production volume in 2021 by around three percentage points to up to seven percent. Above all, the good demand from Asia, especially from China, is encouraging. In the USA, impulses would come from the economic stimulus program launched by President Joe Biden. “The EU is also recovering step by step, albeit a little more slowly,” said association president Karl Haeusgen. However, he restricted the fact that Corona still unsettled and burdens companies. In addition, there would be structural change in the automotive industry and, in some cases, delivery problems. “However, mechanical engineering is showing itself to be resilient even in this difficult phase.” The VDMA boss warned politicians to implement uniform pandemic regulations and develop a long-term strategy. “However, it now also needs unity, clarity and concrete political plans for the time after.”

Positive mood in the electrical industry

ZVEI President Gunther Kegel was also confident for the electrical industry. “The electrical industry got off to a positive start in 2021,” said Kegel. This year a production increase of five percent could be achieved. “If you look at the orders received in the first three months, things can possibly go even better.” Capacity utilization was almost back at the previous year’s level at 82 percent in the first quarter of 2021. Incoming orders also generated optimism. In February alone there was an increase of 13 percent over the previous year. On the debate about mandatory corona protection requirements in the industry, Kegel said that over 90 percent of the companies in his industry were already testing. “This means that another tightened lockdown is not only unnecessary for the industry, it also makes no sense.”

Networking and automation as a topic

The fair in Hanover is considered to be the largest industrial show in the world. In online presentations, live streams from exhibitors, numerous video conferences and a new networking tool, the companies focus on technologies for networking and automation in production and logistics. In particular, contributions for more energy efficiency are to be shown. Economic policy rounds, specialist lectures and panel discussions are also planned.
