Even a company as dedicated to protecting privacy as Apple could not resist the demands of the US government under former President Donald Trump.
According to the New York Times , in February 2018, the US Department of Justice asked Apple to provide information about former White House adviser Don McGahn. It’s not clear what the FBI was looking for, or whether McGahn was a key figure in that investigation. However, Apple has kept this secret.

Apple cannot refuse the US government’s request for information. Photo: Getty Images. Authorities asked Apple not to disclose information. It was not until last May that McGahn was informed, the source of New York Times said. At the time, special counsel Robert Mueller was investigating allegations that Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign had ties to Russia. Don McGahn is one of the leading figures in the team supporting the US billionaire running for the White House. It is not clear from which side Apple received the request for information. At the beginning of 2018, Donald Trump himself also expressed anger at his aide. However, it is highly likely that the request comes from the Robert Mueller investigation. In addition to Don McGahn’s personal information collection, Trump’s campaign manager, Paul Manafort, is also facing trial for alleged election fraud. Mr. McGahn was not aware of Apple providing his information to the authorities. Photo: New York Times. Neither Apple nor McGahn’s attorney declined to comment. A few days ago, New York Times also revealed that the US Justice Department under Donald Trump asked Apple to provide information from the accounts of two Democratic politicians Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell. All of these cases have never been officially announced by Apple. In both cases, the concern is not only with who is being investigated, but also in how authorities exploit personal information. According to the Engadget For many years, technology companies have tried to be transparent in the use of user data, however, they do not explain and provide public information about such incidents. Can Apple become the bank of the future? Technology companies are looking to enter the financial technology industry such as Paypal, Samsung. Many rumors about Apple going to bank with Apple Wallet Pay and Apple Card.

On the evening of June 4, Vietnam time, Facebook made a decision to ban Former US President Donald Trump from using this social networking platform, including Instagram, for 2 years.

Former US President – Donald Trump. (Photo: AP Photo) The ban took effect on January 6, 2021, when Mark Zuckerberg’s company locked the account of the former US President. And it will be at least until January 7, 2023, two years after his social media account was suspended, that Trump can reappear on Facebook and Instagram. So with this ban, Mr. Trump will not be able to post anything to influence Facebook and Instagram for the next 2 years. The Facebook account of former US President Donald Trump. (Photo: Pe3k/Shutterstock) According to CNN, after the suspension period, the world’s largest social network will still assess whether the “risk to public safety” has decreased to decide whether to restore Mr. Trump’s account. If Facebook finds that there is still a threat to public safety, it will continue to suspend Trump’s entire account. In addition, after the ban is lifted, if there are continued violations, Mr. Trump will face a series of other penalties from Facebook. Former US President Donald Trump. (Photo: The New York Times) This is a decision made by Facebook’s independent oversight department after reviewing the decision the platform made in January of this year. According to a source from Reuters, this independent Facebook watchdog disagreed with the previous decision to block Mr. Trump indefinitely, and offered them six months to make a decision. (Image: BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI |AFP via Getty Images) Responding to the decision of the world’s largest social network, Mr. Trump’s representative said it was an insult to those who voted for him. Former President Trump also confirmed that he will not have a private meal with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg when he returns to the White House next time, a move that implies he will run for president again. Former US President Donald Trump during a meeting with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the White House in September 2019.
Former US President Donald Trump has shut down his own new social media platform, which was launched less than a month ago. (Source: KnowTechie) The above information has been confirmed by Mr. Jason Miller, a senior aide to Mr. Trump, to US media. Accordingly, the new media platform called “From the desk of Donald Trump” (From the desk of Donald Trump) has been permanently closed. Channel CNBC “This is just a supplement to the broader efforts we’ve been making,” Miller said. We hope to have more information on the larger efforts soon,” but did not specify a time. Asked if the decision was a “precondition” for Trump to join “another social media platform,” Miller said: “Yes, it really is.” The communication platform “From Donald J.Trump’s desk”, launched on May 4, has a lot in common with Twitter. Twitter and Facebook have permanently locked the account of former President Trump after the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, accusing him of inciting violence. (According to CNBC)

The former US president opened a new blog, but the first week of engagement was less than a single tweet during his time in office.
According to social media analytics company data BuzzSumo , blog titled From Donald J. Trump’s desk , had just over 212,000 interactions in the first week.

By comparison, Trump’s tweet last October was retweeted hundreds of thousands of times and received more than 1.5 million likes. After the US presidency, Mr. Trump is no longer an Internet celebrity. Photo: Business Insider. In other words, the number of interactions on a single post by Trump in office is more than the total interaction of the new blog. According to the Business Insider , a personal page launched last week that allows Trump to communicate with his fans. He can post statements, videos and pictures. So far, the site works a lot like the timeline on the old Twitter account. That is, Mr. Trump mainly uses it to post statements against his critics. The former US president was banned from Twitter and other major social media platforms after the attack on the Capitol on January 6. He was impeached for his role in inciting riots through false statements about the 2020 election. Mr Trump regularly uses social media to spread one-sided personal assessments, including the “stolen election” comment. Polls show that many Republicans believe in Donald Trump’s disinformation campaign. The fact that the former US President’s personal website has been estranged from the online community shows that the ban on Twitter and other social networks has had a great impact on Mr. Trump’s ability to communicate with the public. The largest social network in the world before Facebook was born The video shows the popular social networking sites from 1997-2020. The rankings are referenced, using data from Wikipedia, the Internet Archive and Google Books.

Former Czech President Vaclav Klaus. Photo: TASS “We are punishing one of the great powers in the world … I see this as proof that our country does not have a proper foreign policy,” former Czech President Vaclav Klaus on April 23 told Blesk newspaper. is based in Prague, mentioning Czech-Russian diplomatic tensions, TASS reported. Mr. Vaclav Klaus also said that the fact that Czech diplomats tried to blame Russian intelligence for the Vrbetice explosion in 2014 and used it as an excuse to expel Russian diplomats, is an act of trying to score points with The United States and the NATO military in the hope of receiving support. According to Mr. Klaus, the Czechs were hasty in this case. He argued that Prague “should have waited for true and serious evidence” before making any conclusions regarding the Vrbetice explosion. “It was a mistake to issue an ultimatum to Russia before having the facts,” Klaus warned. The former Czech president also revealed that he had discussions with his successor, current Czech President Milos Zeman, about tensions with Russia and the explosion seven years ago in Vrbetice. Russia-Czech relations became strained after Prague last week expelled 18 Russian diplomats accused of being officers of intelligence services. Prague also questioned Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency was involved in the ammunition explosion in Vrbetice in October 2014 that caused two deaths. Russia denied all related allegations and asked 20 staff of the Czech Embassy in Moscow to leave Russian territory in response. Moscow’s strong retaliation surprised Czechs. On April 22, the Czech Republic again expelled 63 more Russian diplomats and staff, followed by corresponding action from Russia.

During his tenure, Mr. Trump has always identified himself as the leading peace negotiator on the Korean peninsula. Washington maintains about 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea to protect the country from North Korean nuclear weapons, as well as to protect American interests in Northeast Asia. Under the agreement, Seoul agrees to pay 1.18 trillion won ($ 1.03 billion) in 2021, and subsequent increases depend on the defense budget. That amount is equivalent to an increase of 13.9% from the roughly $ 920 million that Seoul paid under the 2019 expiration agreement, but far below the $ 5 billion per year amount initially claimed by Trump.

Former President Donald Trump has accused the South Korean president of rifting ties with the US, while emphasizing his friendship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
“North Korean President Kim Jong Un, whom I know (and love) in the most difficult circumstances, has never respected the current president of South Korea, Mr. Moon Jae In”, Channel NewsAsia quoted Mr. Trump on April 23.

The former US president has criticized the South Korean president as “weak” as a leader and negotiator. “We have been treated like idiots for decades. However, I have made them pay billions of dollars more for the cost of the defense the US provides,” he stressed. “The Biden administration has not asked for the additional billions of dollars that Korea has agreed to pay us,” Mr. Trump added, referring to incumbent President Joe Biden. During his presidency, former President Trump has identified himself as the leading negotiator in peace talks on the Korean peninsula. He first met Mr. Kim during the first summit between the two countries in June 2018 in Singapore. The two later expressed good sympathy for each other. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and former US President Donald Trump. Photo: AFP. The two leaders have met twice again during Trump’s time in office, and North Korea has suspended nuclear and missile tests. However, analysts say Pyongyang will continue to push ahead with its weapons programs. In March, South Korea agreed to pay an additional 13.9% for the cost of maintaining US forces stationed in the country. Thus, the six-year “special measures agreement” will replace the previous US-Korean agreement that expired at the end of 2019. Under the new agreement, Seoul will agree to pay 1,180 billion won ($ 1.03 billion) for 2021. This is lower than the $ 5 billion required by Trump, but this is the largest annual increase in the near future. 2 decades. The financial dispute has rippled the two countries’ security alliances since Trump has repeatedly accused South Korea of being a “stalker”. Washington currently has about 28,500 troops in South Korea to protect the country from its nuclear-armed neighbor North Korea, while also protecting US interests in Northeast Asia.

US President Joe Biden is determined to improve relations with European allies. (Source: Reuters)

Former President Donald Trump changed America – less than his supporters wanted, but more than the opposition had hoped.

However, over the past four years, it’s not just America that has changed. America’s allies are also changing. This makes it impossible to return transatlantic relations back to an earlier period.

The unique relationship between the US and European countries is seen by observers as not going back to the way it once was, even though Mr. Biden has become President.

Former President Donald Trump is not alone.

The first reason that the relationship between the US and the European Union (EU) is difficult to return to the past originated from before Mr. Trump took office.

That’s Brexit. For decades, the UK was the first US partner to think of in Europe. London is also the most reliable and effective support partner on the “old continent”, sometimes even accepting against the bloc’s general policy.

Now that the UK leaves the EU, the United States needs to invest more time and resources in building relationships with EU politicians and institutions.

After all, defense and intelligence relations with Britain are still of great value to the United States, causing Washington to be concerned. Besides, the UK is still the closest partner to the US in terms of geopolitical issues such as Russia and China.

On the other hand, the administration of President Biden concurred with the assessment of the EU and Ireland on the challenges Brexit brought to Northern Ireland.

The impact of Brexit on UK-EU relations poses challenges for the US, especially when London and Brussels will have many disagreements in the coming period.

The second reason for the split between the US and EU is the common value system, affecting policy choices.

Economically, the presidency of President Trump has made American politicians “awaken”, realizing they need to work towards solving their own problems. Democrats demand increased support for workers, as well as for industry.

Although the EU also takes such measures, this could provoke the EU to oppose what it calls “unfair competition”.

In addition, EU priorities in the twenty-first century such as climate change or digital services could lead to new tariffs or regulations. With different approaches to digital privacy or freedom of speech, the common value systems between the US and Europe are increasingly distant.

However, the biggest difference lies in the geopolitics, namely the friend-foe perspective.

During the Cold War, when the Soviet Union was a common enemy, the transatlantic relationship was arguably the most sustainable.

Currently, some European countries and politicians have come closer to Moscow, considering it as an important energy partner. Others want to ignore acts of aggression, or actions that the EU deems a violation of Russian human rights.

But China is the real problem. The US sees China as a major competitor in both economic and security terms.

Meanwhile, while China can be viewed as a security threat, Europe still looks forward to economic cooperation with Beijing, reflected in the Comprehensive Agreement on Investment signed in December 2020.

America and Europe will find it difficult to cooperate with each other when it is impossible to even determine which are friends and enemies.

If not united by a common threat, the transatlantic relationship will split.

European leaders can breathe when a “traditional” President like Mr. Biden is elected. However, the departure of Mr. Trump does not create a solid foundation for this long-standing relationship.

The transatlantic alliance is on the decline, as is the Western-led world order. The two sides need to understand this soon to start building a new architecture, thereby forming a stronger bilateral relationship.

(According to Nikkei Asia)

Some observers believe China is adopting an old strategy in the South China Sea, which has surpassed former US President Barack Obama to challenge the new White House leader Joe Biden.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hoa Xuan Oanh announced on March 22 that Chinese ships appeared in the Ba Dau Rock area of Vietnam’s Spratly archipelago, initially up to hundreds of ships, simply “getting out of the wind” and the Philippines should see the situation as “reasonable”.

Chinese fleets are lined up at the Ba Dau Rock area in the South China Sea. Photo: CNN

Two weeks later, more than 40 Chinese ships remained in the Ba Dau Stone and the statements became more concise. The Philippine Foreign Ministry on April 12 warned China that Manila would issue daily protest diplomatic notes as long as the mainland’s “marine militia” remained in the area. The Philippines authorities have used a phrase similar to the US way of describing the Chinese fleet.

Bloomberg quoted Carl Schuster, former director of missions at the US Pacific Command’s Joint Intelligence Center as commenting: “If your goal is to capture an ocean and atoll, without fighting, this is an excellent dishonesty tactic. Only professional seafarers knew it was a lie. No one allowed their ships to ‘shelter’ in the hurricane zone several weeks before a storm. If they were really commercial ships, it would cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars a day to lay these ships idle side by side.

Analysts Andreo Calonzo and Philip Heijmans said Beijing appears to be probing whether the new US President Joe Biden will take any action after pledging to shake hands with allies in the region to prevent Chinese assertiveness or not. Philippine Foreign Minister Teodoro Locsin blamed the Obama administration for failing to stop Beijing in a similar incident in 2012 at Scarborough Shoal.

“This is a test of what the Biden administration is willing to do. The way the US responds will determine the next challenge. For now, everything we (the US) have done is more eloquent than substantive, ”said Schuster, currently professor in military science and diplomacy at the University of Hawaii Pacific. emphasize.

Complex decisions

Last month, the US vowed to stand with the Philippines while accusing China of using “maritime militias to intimidate, provoke and intimidate other countries”. When asked about relations with China at a news conference the same month, President Biden revealed that his administration “would hold China accountable for obeying the rules” in the South China Sea and elsewhere.

Another big problem is how to correct the response. China’s use of commercial fishing vessels resembles a “gray zone” tactic, allowing Beijing to deny that anything is wrong. Sending an aircraft carrier or other warships near the reef risks becoming an overreact, making the United States seem like the aggressor.

On the contrary, doing nothing can give the impression of weakness. Over the past few years, the United States has increased its challenge of China’s sovereignty over the waters, increasing the frequency of free navigation operations around disputed territories. The Biden administration also reaffirmed that the US-Philippines defense treaty covers every attack in the South China Sea, which was made clear under former President Donald Trump after decades of ambiguity.

Another major problem for Mr. Biden is Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte, who has weakened the alliance while praising closer ties with Beijing.

According to Rommel Ong, a retired Philippine Navy admiral and now professor at the Ateneo de Manila University School of Management, under President Duterte there will be only very limited options for the Navy. Manila’s response is believed to be limited to sending objectionable diplomatic notes and anti-China statements via social media.

The Philippines’ statement on April 12 used some of the strongest words, including a 2016 international arbitral tribunal ruling. The statement also condemns the Chinese Embassy for criticizing the minister. Defense Delfin Lorenzana, who last weekend said the weather was fine and boats had no reason to stay in the Ba Dau Rock area.

Warning

Duterte’s government responded to China’s April 3 statement with a statement that it hopes Filipino officials will “avoid any unprofessional remarks that may add to irrational feelings”. . On April 13, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lap Kien accused the Philippines of violating the United Nations Charter, the Law of the Sea and international law by invoking the 2016 ruling of the United Nations court. But Beijing insisted on rejecting.

Mr. Trieu warned the Philippines should see the situation “objectively and properly, stop exaggerating the problem to avoid any negative effects on the bilateral relationship between the two countries, stability and peace in the country. East Sea”. The Beijing representative also denied that the Chinese ships illegally present in the Ba Dau Rock belonged to the maritime militia.

President Duterte broke his weeks-long silence with an April 13 statement, insisting the dispute would be resolved through “peaceful measures” and would not “shape the relationship. Bilateral”.

“It will not be an obstacle to the positive overall development trajectory of our bilateral friendship,” the Philippine government leader said in the statement, citing increasingly deep cooperation. vaccine against Covid-19 and “economic recovery from the pandemic” between the two sides.

Reputation is compromised

Vaccine access has become a major concern for Mr. Duterte. Manila was shut down again last week as the Philippines faces its worst outbreak and is expecting much of the vaccine supply from Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac.

The Philippine President attended a March 29 celebration in which Chinese Ambassador Huang Zilian said the vaccine was a testament to the “closer cooperation in the new era” between the two countries.

Shahriman Lockman, a senior analyst at the Institute for Strategic and International Studies in Malaysia, said that this time, Washington was “not so naive” after a failed attempt in 2012 to reach a withdrawal agreement. retreating from Scarborough Shoal “did great damage to American prestige in Southeast Asia”. According to Mr. Lockman, the Biden administration is wary of the danger of sinking into this scenario and not knowing if they will eventually be blamed for escalating the situation, which is quite possible while the Philippines capable of reacting only in a perfunctory way.

Citing the research results of the Pew Research Center, the British newspaper Guardian reported that President Biden has received a credit rating of 59%.

Meanwhile, at the same time, predecessor Donald Trump received only 39% and former President Barack Obama received a 61% credit rating.

With the migration crisis on the southern border acting as an early test of President Biden’s capabilities, the American people perceive this as a very serious problem, even overcoming. COVID-19 translation at the present time.

Previously, in a Pew study in June 2020, 58% of respondents said that the COVID-19 pandemic was at the top of the list of concern. In the latest poll, that number has fallen to 47% as more people vaccinate and states reopen.

Pew interviewed 5,109 adults in the US in April 2021 for this poll. About 72% of participants rated the Biden administration’s vaccine implementation program as good and extremely good. Meanwhile, 67% of the respondents supported the COVID-19 support package and 36% answered “fully support”.

The probe was conducted before Washington announced a suspension of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine.

After President Biden came to power in January, the US State Department asked to reconsider the deal passed under former US President Donald Trump. Previously, there was a lawsuit asking to block the deal on the grounds that the UAE was involved in a conflict in Yemen and supported General Khalifa Haftar’s forces in Libya. In this regard, the US State Department said it planned to conduct a candid and continuous dialogue with the UAE.

In the statement, the State Department spokesperson stated that the US administration intends to launch the sale of fighter jets to the UAE, along with reviewing the details, consulting UAE officials to ensure said the two sides to understand the UAE obligations before, during and after delivery. The handover deadline will be in the next few years.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Gregory Meeks has expressed concern about the deal. According to this congressman, since the handover of the aircraft will not take place soon, the National Assembly will have plenty of time to evaluate whether to proceed with the deal, as well as whether to impose terms or arguments do not have any restrictions.

If the deal is enforced, the UAE will be the first Arab country to receive F-35 fighters, aircraft capable of gathering intelligence, attacking deep into the territory of the target and combat in the air. Under the plan, the UAE will receive 50 F-35s, equivalent to the fleet size of Israel.

President George W. Bush sits in the White House after announcing that the US and Britain began bombing Afghanistan on October 7, 2001, marking the beginning of the longest war in American history. Photo: Reuters

Although at the time, most Americans supported President Bush’s decision to go to war, doubts remained as to how the war would play out and how long it could last.

Bush, then 55 years old, took office in less than nine months. On the evening of October 11, 2001, he tried to reassure the American people that the government was aware of the lessons from the past and that they were determined not to let the US bogged down in an irrational war in Asia.

“We have learned some very important lessons in Vietnam,” Mr. Bush affirmed. “This is another war that requires a different approach and a completely different spirit.”

While he did not guarantee how long the war would last, Bush made a sure promise that America would win.

“This battle will last until the al-Qaeda terrorist organization is brought to justice,” he announced. two years, but we will win this war. “

But from the very beginning, the US government did not seem to have determined the goal of achieving “victory”. On Wednesday, current US President Joe Biden announced that he would withdraw all military forces in Afghanistan by September 11.

US soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division carried an injured Afghan man toward the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter in Kandahar province on October 23, 2010. At that time, about 150,000 US and international troops. has been deployed to Afghanistan. Photo: AFP

This decision still does not answer the ever-standing question that his three predecessors had hoped or envisioned a outcome for the war that they always claimed America would win.

In the beginning, the goal of this war was to destroy al-Qaeda and make sure that the terrorist group could not use Afghanistan as a base to launch any other terrorist attack against the United States. In just 6 months, that goal was achieved. The al-Qaeda chiefs were either destroyed, captured or fled Afghanistan.

However, instead of declaring an end to the war, Bush at that time set out new “missions” for this war. In April 2002, he announced new political and military goals.

He announced that the United States will help its allies in Afghanistan build an increasingly modernized country with a stable democracy, a powerful military force, and good healthcare facilities. and a public education system for children.

“We understand that peace can only be true when the Afghan people have the potential to achieve their own wishes,” he said in a speech at the Virginia Military Academy.

Although setting out very noble and respectable goals, former President Bush did not set specific standards to achieve them and did not give any information about the US military. How long will you have to stay there. He replied generally, “We will stay until the mission is completed.”

Like former President Bush, the two successors, Barack Obama and Donald Trump, both put themselves in invisible bonds vowing to win in Afghanistan, raising expectations for a victory. The military side of this war.

General Dan McNeill, who served two terms as commander of the US military in Afghanistan during the Bush administration, said the end was always “murky, dark.”

Mr. McNeill then shared that: “Some people have thought of Jeffersonian democracy (in the thought of late President Thomas Jefferson), but that will not happen in Afghanistan”.

In a secret report sent to senior Pentagon officials in October 2003, former US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld also expressed skepticism: “Whether we are winning or losing in Global war on terror? “.

By 2006, as the Taliban rebelled and escalated their attacks, the suspicions became more and more common.

On August 29, 2006, former US ambassador Ronald Neumann in Afghanistan sent a warning to Washington, in which he affirmed: “We will not be able to win in Afghanistan”.

However, in public, the US government continued to declare the opposite.

“We are winning,” General Karl Eikenberry, former commander of US forces in Afghanistan, told ABC News just two weeks after Neumann issued the warning. When asked if the US would lose the war, Eikenberry bluntly replied: “Victory is not an option in the war in Afghanistan”.

Two years later, the US battlefield commanders in Afghanistan had to ask the Pentagon to send reinforcements because they were out of position as the Taliban had increased the number of troops from 7,000 to 11,000 fighters. American generals were very difficult to mobilize more troops, but still continuously declared a victory “invisible”.

In September 2008, US Army General Jeffrey Schloesser, former commander of US forces in eastern Afghanistan, after repeatedly asked by reporters about whether he thought that US troops were still winning. , commented: “I would say that we will not lose any war, at any cost. This is just a victory that takes more time, I guess. ”

By the time Mr. Obama took office in 2009, US military officials admitted they were facing a terrible uprising. Obama then announced an expansion strategy to send thousands more soldiers to Afghanistan and spend tens of billions of dollars to rebuild the Kabul government.

“For terrorists against America, my consistent message is: America will defeat all hostile forces,” former President Obama announced in March 2009.

Yet again, no one in the Obama administration can tell what the outcome of that victory will be.

“How do we know when this is over? And how will it end? ”Democratic Sen. James Webb questioned Michèle Flournoy, former Deputy Secretary of Defense under President Obama and General David Petraeus at a congressional hearing on. April 2009.

Obama administration officials gradually became contradictory in subsequent steps. On the one hand, they are beginning to admit that a military victory is quite unlikely and the only way to end the conflict is for the warring parties in Afghanistan to reach a “political solution”.

On the other hand, when the US number reached 100,000, generals under the Obama administration continued their attacks on the Taliban instead of using diplomatic means.

In public, some Obama administration officials began to dodge when questioned about the war.

At a congressional testimony in June 2011, former Defense Secretary Robert Gates was asked whether the US is winning or losing in Afghanistan, replying: “I believe we are succeeding in the war. strategy of the President “.

A week later, at another hearing, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did not directly comment, but only said: “I do not think it is a matter of winning or losing.”

Throughout his term, the Obama administration has planned to train and equip the Afghan security force of 352,000 soldiers and paramilitary police with the belief that these allied forces will overwhelm the Taliban. thanks to the support of the US.

Former President Obama once pledged to withdraw all US military forces from Afghanistan by the end of his second term. But he withdrew and ordered about 8,400 soldiers to stay, seeing that the Afghan security forces were incapable of defending against Taliban attacks.

By the time Donald Trump took office in 2017, things were pretty bleak. The Taliban have grown stronger in Obama’s eight years in power, adding about 60,000 combat troops. The Afghan army and police are suffering so much damage that the Kabul government has to keep the casualties a secret to avoid weakening morale.

The special forces in the Afghan National Army train at a base near Kabul on March 5, 2020. Afghan commandos often perform missions with the US military. Photo: Washington Post

Former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis admitted to the US Senate Committee on Armed Services in June 2017: “Right now, we are not having the upper hand in Afghanistan.”

By August 2017, former President Donald Trump announced a new strategy for the war. In a speech at the Fort Myer base, he pledged to end the 16-year conflict in Afghanistan and vowed to help the US regain full victory.

“Our army will fight to win,” Trump announced. “From now on, victory will be clearly defined: attack our enemies, destroy ISIS, take down al-Qaeda, stop the Taliban from taking Afghanistan and stop mass terrorist attacks. “.

The war in Afghanistan under Trump is heating up with the number of US troops reaching 14,000. The Washington administration also ordered a series of drastic airstrikes, with the largest number of bombs and missiles since the outbreak of the war.

According to the strategy outlined by former President Donald Trump, the US military is simply trying to weaken the Taliban to gain political leverage for the peace talks. In February 2020, the Trump administration reached an agreement with the Taliban, paving the way for the gradual withdrawal of all US troops from the West Asian country.

On April 14, 2021, President Joe Biden officially announced plans to withdraw all US military forces from Afghanistan from May 1 and end on September 11.

This will be the end of the promises of a “vague” victory and end the war that lasted for two decades, spanning four presidents and is the longest war in American history.

Bloomberg cited the Pentagon’s April 12 announcement: President Biden nominated Christine Wormuth to the position of Secretary of the Army. If passed by the Senate, Ms. Wormuth, who served as a top defense policy official under former President Barack Obama, would become the leader of the largest branch of the U.S. military.

Unprecedented

Ms. Wormuth began working for the U.S. Government in 1996 in the Pentagon Policy Office. During the Obama administration, she served as chief communications officer from the White House National Security Council to the Pentagon on defense matters.

President Biden nominates Christine Wormuth to the position of Secretary of the Army

A veteran national security official with experience working at the Pentagon, Ms. Wormuth also served as Director of Defense Policy at the National Security Council under former President Obama’s administration. Most recently, Ms. Wormuth was Director of the Center for Defense Policy and International Security at the Rand Corporation, a nonprofit that supports the U.S. and international Governments in defense, economic, and scientific policy research and analysis. She served as a special assistant to the president and Senior Director of Defense at the National Security Council (NSC) from December 2010 to August 2012, where she served as the chief communications officer from the NSC to the Pentagon on defense matters. She was also an influential member of Mr Biden’s transition team at the Pentagon as head of the Biden-Harris Defense Agency Review Team.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin commented: “Christine Wormuth is a true darling with a devoted career serving America and national security. I am sure that, if confirmed, she will lead the soldiers and represent their families as Army Minister in honor and integrity.”

If confirmed by the Senate as military secretary, Wormuth would be one of the more powerful officials in a longstanding male-dominated defense facility. She will work with the Army Chief of Staff, Gen. James McConville, who does not command soldiers but is responsible along with the Secretary of the Army for training and equipment.

The trend of choosing women for important positions

Mr. Biden’s nomination will continue Mr. Biden’s tendency to choose women and people of color for top Defense Department jobs. Austin was the first black Defense Secretary and Kathleen Hicks was the first woman to serve as deputy defense secretary.

Jen Easterly was nominated for the position of head of the Department of Homeland Security’s Cyber security and Infrastructure Agency (CISA).

Earlier, President Joe Biden had nominated two female generals as military commanders, positions that have so far been mostly male-only. It was Air Force General Jacqueline Van Ovost, the only female serviceman with a 4-star rank – the highest rank in the U.S. military – to be appointed head of the U.S. Army Transport Command (USTRANSCOM). Three-star General Laura Richardson was appointed commander of Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) in charge of Central America and Latin America. In her new role, her rank was raised to 4 stars.

Most recently, on April 12, the White House said That Jen Easterly – a former senior official in charge of counterterrorism work of the National Security Agency (NSA), was nominated to the position of head of the Department of Homeland Security’s Cyber security and Infrastructure Agency (CISA). Ms. Easterly served on the National Security Council as a senior director for counterterrorism and the president’s special assistant in former President Barack Obama’s administration. She is also the CEO of Morgan Stanley, in charge of the company’s cybersecurity a combined center.

According to Mr Walsh, Mr Biden’s personnel decisions have made a difference from his predecessor’s administration. The number of women in senior positions in his administration is expected to increase significantly compared to Mr. Trump’s administration, where these positions are often held by white men. Observers speculate Mr Biden could set new records for the number of women holding positions of power in Washington. According to the CAWP Director, this is expected to be a positive signal.

“Every time a woman takes on a senior leadership position, it conveys a message to girls, young girls and adult women across the country that they can do this too,” Ms Walsh said.
