Particularly in Hai Phong city, this index reached a very high harmful threshold at 12 o’clock. Hoi An city (Quang Nam province) has the highest UV index in the country, the risk of harm is very high (8.1-8.9) at 11-13 o’clock. According to the World Health Organization, the UV index is 8-10, if the skin is in the sun for about 25 minutes, it can be burned. This index is 11 or higher, the skin is at risk of burns if exposed to the sun for about 10 minutes without protection. And ultraviolet rays at 12 will be very dangerous to health. Experts recommend that everyone wear goggles to protect their eyes. When outdoors, people should wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of UV rays. Sunglasses can help prevent cataracts, as well as wrinkles around the eyes. It’s best to ask your ophthalmologist for the right glasses. The hot sun with harmful ultraviolet rays will also be dangerous to the skin, besides sun protection measures such as wearing clothes, wearing a wide-brimmed hat… people need to pay attention to applying sunscreen and should Apply every 3 hours to protect the skin.

According to the sheet Forbes , Southeast Asia is a place famous for many beautiful scenes, but in 2019 only welcomed 133 million visitors. This place still has many desirable tourist destinations for tourists after the pandemic. If you are looking for a quiet place to rest, escape the busy life of the city, the 5 natural and pristine destinations that Forbes introduced below are the destinations for your next Southeast Asia trip.

Are you craving to immerse yourself in the mountainous spaces filled with terraced fields in Vietnam? Lao Cai is an ideal place, few places can compare. Coming to this northern mountainous province, you can see the natural beauty and discover the culture in many places such as Lao Cai city, town Sapa to the roof of Indochina Fansipan… For a memorable trip, visitors should experience another trekking trip through the forest to the border region of Vietnam to Kunming, China. Green landscape in summer in Nam Cang commune, Sa Pa district, Lao Cai province. Photo: VNE In addition, the American newspaper also introduced more world wonders: Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, Philippines; Red Lotus Lake, Thailand; Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia; Komodo, Indonesia… Recently, the world’s leading travel website TripAdvisor has just announced the annual awards voted by users for 2021, including voting for world-famous destinations. In this ranking, Hanoi capital ranked 6th and Hoi An (Quang Nam) ranked 11th voted by tourists. According to visitors, the charming capital of Vietnam has existed for thousands of years. Besides preserving monuments such as the old town, monuments and colonial architecture, Hanoi is still developing more modern day by day. “Hanoi may not have kept its previous names like Thang Long or ‘flying dragon’ but Hanoi has never forgotten its glorious past, such as the sites of Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Hoa Lo prison proves it”, comments by travelers on TripAdvisor. Lakes, parks, shady streets and more than 600 temples also contribute to the attractiveness of this city, which can be easily explored by taxi. Meanwhile, Hoi An ancient town is rated by tourists as “a well-preserved model of an important Southeast Asian trading port from the 15th-19th centuries”. TripAdvisor voters also advise tourists when traveling in Hoi An ancient town “let the skilled tailors here tailor you a few clothes according to your own measurements”.

Hoi An Oi Villa is a tourist villa located along the Thu Bon River and about 1.5 km southeast of Hoi An ancient town (Quang Nam province).

The design task given to 6717 studio is to design a tourist villa with seven different bedrooms, including four double rooms, one family room, one twin bed room, one four bed Dom room . Especially the villa has living space, dining, kitchen and swimming pool. All rooms and common living spaces fully exploit the view and river breeze. The villa must bring the atmosphere and spatial spirit of Hoi An but still be modern and contemporary. Architect 6717 shared: “Hoi An Oh Villa is a project reminiscent of an old town on the banks of Hoai River.” According to the architect, Hoi An is the cherishing of traditional Hoi An values and blowing a new breeze in accordance with the breath of the times. Overall floor plan of the project. Hoi An Oi Villa was developed from the tube house structure of Hoi An ancient town: the front house, the bridge house and the back house.

For me, going out during the holiday that coincides with the outbreak of the new epidemic is a memorable experience when the feeling of insecurity is constant, from time to time I go online to read the news to update the situation.
“Are you still going out to play? This translation is so scary!”.

Receiving a text from my boss, I glanced at my watch. 6 more hours until my flight from Hanoi to Da Nang departs at 20 pm on April 30. Previously, on April 29, Ha Nam province recorded a case with a positive result for SARS-CoV-2, BN2899. This person has just completed concentrated isolation in Da Nang City and tested negative for nCoV 3 times. After that, many F1, F2 related to this case were found to have Covid-19. “Or stay where you are?”, I hesitated a bit. Noi Bai airport (Hanoi) at noon on April 29 was more crowded than usual because many people returned to their hometown or went on holiday on April 30. Photo: Ngoc Tan. However, this is my first leave since the beginning of this year. I was so excited that I planned it long in advance. There are still recommendations from the Ministry of Health on maintaining the 5K status (masks, disinfection, distance, not gathering, medical declaration), but then, moving between localities is not prohibited. Moreover, Da Nang has not had a ban on tourist areas, resorts and hotels from accepting guests. In the end, I packed my things in my suitcase and left with the thought: “If the translation is too complicated, I can book a ticket to return earlier.” Avoid going to bars and clubs for fear of danger On the morning of May 1, I decided to go to the beach. Contrary to my imagination of a crowded Danang during the holiday season, traffic is sparse on the streets. Seeing me wondering, the driver said: “The epidemic is so scary that people have been rushing back since April 30. There is a company that booked a 5-star hotel for 500 employees to go on vacation but also canceled the tour.” At the beach, although the weather is quite nice, I can count the number of people out here playing on my fingers. It was a group of young Chinese friends carrying buoys playing in the sea. A family with young children all fell into the water and struggled back to the shore to make sand. In the afternoon of the same day, the scene was still strangely deserted on the way to Linh Ung pagoda on Son Tra peninsula. Not many tourists visit Linh Ung Pagoda (Son Tra, Da Nang) on the afternoon of May 1. Some foreigners do not wear masks. Photo: NVCC. Arriving at an emerging place recently, which young people call “Obama rock”, I saw about 100 people, mostly local families, sitting crammed in huts to eat, drink and sing. . Seeing the crowded scene, no one wearing a mask or paying attention to the distance, my companion and I quickly left. Although the plan that day was to go “chill” at the bar on the roof of a high-rise building in the evening, we decided to cancel because a closed environment such as a bar or pub can easily spread the virus. Throughout the day, my companion and I did not forget to wear masks and bring hand sanitizer. Sometimes when traveling on the road, I take advantage of reading the news to update the situation about new infections. Going out in anxiety According to the schedule, on May 2, I spend time mainly in Hoi An city (Quang Nam). Unlike Da Nang, the entertainment spots here are still quite crowded. Except when diving to see coral or swimming in Cu Lao Cham, my companion and I try not to leave the mask. At lunchtime, we also choose a corner table to limit contact with people. However, with the large number of tourists present on the island, it is very difficult to ensure social distancing. Visitors are sparse in Hoi An ancient town at about 4pm on May 2, but it becomes more and more crowded in the evening. Photo: NVCC. On the way to Hoi An ancient town, the taxi driver reminded us that the suspected case of SARS-CoV-2 infection was a local. I immediately opened the phone to check the information to be more secure. As evening comes, the number of tourists flocking to the old town increases, mainly young people traveling with lovers and families. They gathered around famous sightseeing areas such as Cau Pagoda, Ba Mu pagoda gate, Phuc Kien assembly hall… to take pictures. According to observations, most do not wear masks. Not wanting to linger long in a crowded place, we decided to leave after a tour around. The last day in Da Nang, I mainly stayed in the hotel, not wandering around the streets because I was bewildered by the complicated development of the disease. At the airport on the evening of May 3, I looked forward to returning home when the Da Nang Department of Health announced that the city had detected a Covid-19 patient in the community. This man works at Phu An hotel (Hai Chau district, Da Nang), residing in Hoi An city. I was jittery when I knew before that, he traveled to many places between the two cities. Before boarding the plane, I made the required medical declaration. My companion and I also thoroughly wore masks, disinfected hands and kept a distance before the flight departed. When I got home, the next morning, I immediately made a medical declaration when I received an email from the company. I would also like to self-isolate at home to monitor the epidemic situation. Through reading the news, I know from 0:00 on May 4, Da Nang city suspends non-essential activities and bans swimming. In Hoi An city, the streets also became quiet, shops closed after detecting a case of Covid-19. On the afternoon of May 4, the old town streets in Hoi An city were quiet after this locality showed a positive case for SARS-CoV-2. Photo: Thanh Duc, Quoc Tuan. For me, going out during the holiday that coincides with the outbreak of the new epidemic is a memorable experience when the feeling of insecurity is constant, from time to time I go online to read the news to update the situation. However, at least, I think I have implemented the 5K rule well and complied with all regulations on epidemic prevention in the places I went through.

  Dispel the noise with peace

In the last days of March and the beginning of April, when the translation of Covid-19 was well controlled, the normal rhythm of life returned in many localities. Business and service activities were relaxed, people began to look to domestic tourism destinations such as to relax after a long series of hard work and strictly abide by the regulations on distance and travel restrictions. For those who love the sea and are passionate about moving, Cu Lao Cham Island is one of the most interesting and attractive destinations.
Instead of the quiet scene during the epidemic season, Cua Dai port (Hoi An) is now crowded with boats and canoes to welcome guests out and in Cu Lao Cham. Visitors came in crowded but were divided orderly, so there was no jostling and pushing. On the face of the train driver as well as the ticketing team, the tour guide had more bright smiles, when the tour was gradually restored after the epidemic. Bai Ong, Cu Lao Cham Island. Photo: Van Thang Only about 20 minutes to turn the sea wave, canoes have docked at Cu Lao Cham port. Different from the noise of the town, Cu Lao Cham attracts visitors from the moment you set foot on the island with a peaceful, simple and fresh beauty. Warmly welcoming us with considerate questions, Nguyen Thi My Loi – a beautiful young tour guide of a small island meticulously guides guests through the procedure of motorbike rental, introduces the island, and then takes it to explore. famous places on the island such as Hai Tang pagoda, ancient Cham well, Cu Lao Cham marine museum …
Coming back here for the second time, after 5 years, Cu Lao Cham gave me a really different feeling. It is more and more spacious houses, including many homestays with beautiful flowers. The small houses of the people on both sides of the road are also meticulously cared for from the typical yellow paint color of Hoi An ancient town to flower pots, ornamental plants in front of all kinds from confetti, life, marigold flowers … always bright and bright. Simple and beautiful, every street in Cu Lao Cham can also be an interesting check-in point for visitors.
In particular, Cu Lao Cham has many beautiful beaches such as Bai Ong, Bai Bac, Bai Du, Bai Chong, Bai Huong … In which, Bai Ong is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Cu Lao Cham when owning. The shore is quite safe, the clear blue water is visible at the bottom, the long white sand is smooth and soft, like a crescent moon shape. Just immerse in that cool water, all worries will disappear …
Say no to plastic bags
Cu Lao Cham is located more than 10 nautical miles from the coast of Cua Dai. The island cluster covers an area of 15.5 km2, a population of about 3,000 people, living mainly on fishing. Nguyen Thi My Loi said, growing green vegetables on the island is very difficult, so most of them are transported from the mainland, during the rough sea season, food is delivered to the island by helicopter. The main helipad overlooking the romantic Bai Ong is also a famous check-in point in Cu Lao Cham.
Although there are still many difficulties, but Cu Lao Cham people are always optimistic, work, enjoy a peaceful and happy life and seek economic development direction from tourism. And the most special thing, Cu Lao Cham is one of the rare islands that say no to plastic bags for more than 10 years.
Setting foot on the island, the panels bold with large words: “Please join us not to use plastic bags on the island” has become a familiar image to many tourists. Not only that, from restaurants, food stalls, street vendors to local markets also resolutely removed plastic bags, instead, people packed paper, banana leaves, and pineapple bags … All people unanimously agreed. for a green – clean – beautiful island commune. “I was very surprised when I bought a little gift on the island and was given a lovely small bag recycled from a pineapple sack by the salesgirl” – Ms. Thu Giang, Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi, visiting Cu Lao Cham island happily share.
Initial success from removing plastic bags, at present, Cu Lao Cham islet is continuing to implement the second program: No plastic straws, no food, drinks and disposable plastic containers.
Keeping a fresh environment, plus many pristine beauty of forests, seas, mountains … Cu Lao Cham has been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a reserve area. biosphere in the world, creating a thrust for the island to develop ecotourism. As the beautiful tour guide Nguyen Thi My Loi said: “Cu Lao Cham has a wild natural beauty bestowed upon it, abundant natural seafood resources; people are very hospitable and friendly; On the island there is no plastic bag so it is unlike any other island ”.

Photo: VNA After a trip to Vietnam, Kara Williams, a former reporter, magazine editor and now a freelance writer, understood clearly why the Southeast Asian nation has become an attractive destination with foreigners, especially retired people like. This American writer talked about his trip to Vietnam and outlined 8 reasons that many foreigners fall in love with the S-shaped country as follows: My first visit to Vietnam last year was miraculous. From the moment my husband and I arrived at the Ho Chi Minh City airport, I was fascinated by the energy of this sweltering urban center, from late night bars to bustling outdoor bars as well as hundreds. the motorcycle stops every time the red light turns on, which requires great courage and fast speed to cross streets with heavy traffic. Then, in the coastal city of Hoi An, I was amazed at the well-preserved AQ and its centuries-old houses, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. We order exotic and delicious food from the night market stalls by pointing at the photo menu, walking the countryside by bike, learning about the rice fields and how to make rice paper, taking a taxi to the beach white sand sea …. This colorful country trip less than a week was too short for us. Before I left Vietnam, I vowed to come back here one day. I remember telling my husband, “You can spend a lot of time here”. I am not alone. With its rich culture, tropical weather, low living standards and many opportunities to visit in Southeast Asia, Vietnam is a popular destination for people to move here. Many retirees are also interested in Vietnam. In fact, Vietnam ranks 10th on International Living magazine’s list of the best places in the world to retire in 2021. Here are the reasons why people consider spending their retirement years in Vietnam. Living expenses International Living magazine points out that Vietnam’s exceptionally low cost of living is a major attraction. In the book In A Better Life for Half the Price (a better life at half the price), author Tim Leffel said, Vietnam is “one of the most valuable places in the world for tourists, especially for tourists. especially in terms of accommodation and food “. Hence, this is a place of great value for the people who live there. Leffel said, when referring to apartments anywhere in Vietnam, “you can find beautiful rooms with reasonable prices in the range of 300-800 USD / month”. Indeed, Neil Varden, CEO of CabinZero who moved from England to Ho Chi Minh City 3 years ago, also said that the cost of living here is very good. “Honestly, I can live like a king without spending a lot of money,” says Varden. Low prices make sightseeing, shopping, and dining in Vietnam more attractive. Immerse yourself in a crowded, affordable restaurant and pay only $ 1 for a cold beer, $ 2 for a sandwich – one of my all-time favorites. Which brings me to … Opportunities to travel Once Vietnam is where you live, going anywhere in Southeast Asia is easy. There is a wide range of flights on low-cost airlines so you can often travel to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos or Malaysia. Traveling in Vietnam is also quite simple, with flights between cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Hanoi, plus a system of buses, trains and even ships to the islands. favorably like Phu Quoc. Food Everywhere, not only Vietnamese food is extremely cheap, but also at restaurants. During my trip to Vietnam, we enjoyed all the typical dishes of Hoi An, from bread to white rose cake, tall. We also tried a variety of other dishes, including pho, spring rolls and Vietnamese pizza – which included meat, eggs, and vegetables on a rice paper roll, all folded to taste. Vietnamese black coffee is also great, though I haven’t tried egg coffee yet. I also couldn’t resist the baguettes and rolls of breakfast buffets. If you are a foodie, love to try new dishes and pay a little money, Vietnam will not disappoint you. Human I agree with Neil Varden’s view that Vietnamese people are very friendly. In fact, wherever we go, we meet smiling faces, people willing to help us. I found it to be really true at the hotel we stayed in in Hoi An, where gentle manners and hospitable nature are what the receptionists and restaurant staff always show off. My English speaking tour guide is knowledgeable and happy to answer all my questions about her life in Vietnam. Phil Minett, an Australian, came to Vietnam for a short vacation in March 2020 with the aim of seeing if this could be a place where he could settle permanently. After that, the border was closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and a year later, Phil was still in Vietnam. While living in a very local 10-story building in Ho Chi Minh City, Phil said he saw the generosity and friendliness of the neighbors around him. Lots of places to live Da Nang seems to be a suitable place for many foreigners, with a series of cafes (with fixed internet), golden beaches, high-rise apartments and beautiful scenery because 3 sides have mountains. around. The south of Da Nang has two world-class golf courses, the further south is the colorful city of Hoi An – where it might be too crowded with some retired people. However, it’s still quite vibrant with many restaurants, cafes, close to many beaches and a slew of tailor-made shops – if tailoring at the right price makes you feel like it. Ho Chi Minh City is an attractive place if you like a historic urban center. The capital Hanoi is located in the north of Vietnam, not as warm as Ho Chi Minh City. Some smaller cities that foreigners can consider are Da Lat, Nha Trang, Vung Tau and Phu Quoc, International Living magazine writes. Weather Vietnam’s monsoon tropical weather also attracts many people, especially those who want to say goodbye to winter in North America. However, this weather is not for everyone. Temperatures in Vietnam can reach 37.7 degrees or more in some regions during the hottest months and humidity is present everywhere in the country. The seasonal climate changes depending on whether you are inland or coastal, north or south. Please see the website of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism for more information on weather. History and Culture From ancient temples and pagodas to 20th century war history, Vietnam offers plenty of fun for retirees who want to open their minds to exploring cultural and historical events. in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. There are countless opportunities to take part in cultural tours and classes to learn how to weave a sleeping rug from a dry reed or to trade in a floating market in the Mekong Delta. Museums detail Vietnam’s invaded history and you can even travel through the Cu Chi Tunnels, a hidden underground system. Of course, it is possible to experience the national culture by simply walking through a neighborhood, eating local food, watching families play in the park or watching a show at a local theater. Once again, Vietnam offers you many opportunities to do just that. Development future After retiring, Jefferson Saunders moved to Vietnam in 2016. Before that, Saunders had come to Vietnam many times. Like many others, though attracted by the friendliness of the Vietnamese and the cost of living here, this man is increasingly interested in watching the development between the old and the new. This emerging market has “higher education, better income, internet, more travel with serious investments pouring in”. The 70-year-old and married man said that Vietnam’s major cities now have many Western-style clinics and hospitals. In addition, there are many high-end hotels in the cities. The challenge of living in Vietnam Unlike some other countries, like Mexico, Vietnam does not have a “retirement visa”. So it is difficult for retired people who do not work in Vietnam to stay here for a long time. There are tourist visas that require you to leave Vietnam every 90 days, the rules depend on which country you are in. Then there is a visa category for foreigners working in Vietnamese companies, as well as investment visas for people working in Vietnam or investing in certain companies. “Applying for a visa is not easy because the rules are always changing,” said Neil Varden.
The scenery of the restaurant changes according to the rice season, so go in the afternoon (around 4:30) because the light is not too harsh, adding a beautiful sunset like a picture, spoiled for virtual life. In addition to drinking water, the bar also serves a variety of simple and rustic European-style snacks.

Chieu Coffee and fragrant rice flavor

The shop is impressed by its simple architecture and green space, style in harmony with nature, the decorations are mainly small green trees and colorful flowers. In addition, the shop also uses rustic and close, rural materials such as straw, coconut leaves, water jars … to embellish the space more impressively.

The “expensive” point is the view of the rice fields and the fresh air of the countryside, especially during the ripe rice season. Looking down from above, you can see the undulating “sea of rice” and far away are the peaceful folds of the people of Quang. It is still the old tiled roof, tinged with the color of time, still a row of green areca in front of the alley, still a small path beside the simple and simple field. All are so familiar to the heart!

The menu of the restaurant is simple with drinks that are simply prepared such as coffee, sugarcane juice, peach tea, white-seed frost, … with super cheap prices.

In addition to chicken rice, banh beo, bread … the drink with a rather strange name “Mót” has also become a certain specialty you should try when visiting Hoi An ancient town, Quang Nam. Recently, however, on social networks appeared a short clip filmed at this famous Mot restaurant, causing a lot of controversy.

Nuoc Mot is one of the famous drinks in Hoi An. (Photo: An An)

Accordingly, in the clip, it can be seen that the shop’s staff scoop each ingredient into a cup very professionally and quickly. Each step seemed to be memorized, so the hand ran quickly. However, what makes many people pay attention is that around this person and the pot of water there are many strange insects.

(Source clip: TikTok @ nvk09101992)

Some viewers of the clip said that it was a fly, specifically Facebook RB expressed: “It feels disgusting to see flies surrounded, like this, it hurts my stomach”.

However, many other netizens immediately protested, saying this was a bee, not a fly or any strange insect. Due to the ingredients of Mot water including herbs such as lemongrass, lemongrass, basil, cinnamon, chrysanthemum, honeysuckle, green tea leaves, dried herb, lotus, jujube …, they have attracted bees fly over.

Besides, many customers have come here to confirm that the shop is very clean and the owner is also careful. In fact, if you look closely at the clip, you can see that even though the glass maker is doing it quickly, he still pays close attention to each stage. When taking the straw, this person does not use the handle directly but uses a tongs to ensure hygiene.

The ingredients of Mau Water are mainly from herbal ingredients.

Furthermore, the type of straw that the restaurant uses is also a bamboo straw, environment-friendly material. This has made many people love the special water that is only available in Hoi An.

It is known that Mot shop owner is Nguyen Huu Xuan. Xuan’s grandfather used to be a medicine man, so he used what he learned from him to cook this sweet and cool water. What makes many people curious is that the name “Mót” does not know where it comes from and what it means. According to Xuan shared in the press, Mót was his childhood name. When he opened the shop, he decided to take the names of his grandparents, his parents still called it for this kind of water.

Two months after 8 consecutive floods landed in Hoi An area in October and November 2020, the bank of Thu Bon river of Triem Tay village in Dien Ban town, Quang Nam was still in ruins. The lush, green two-year-old forest was almost dead when, leaving dry branches mixed with garbage from upstream pouring in, accompanied by the fishy smell of dead fish.

“Trees soaked in water for 20 days cannot survive,” said landscape planner Ngo Anh Dao, who has planted dull forests along the 650m long shore of Triem Tay and neighboring Cam Kim commune since 2018. Sad is sad, she said, but this is the law of nature.

The cork tree is the body

According to TS. Ngo Anh Dao is “a pioneer tree and a sacrifice for the posterior generation behind.” As a result, although the number of poor trees is only 1/3, the riverbank of Trem Tay village does not erode like in the previous years when floods came.

This poor forest is the outermost layer of an ecological soft embankment coping with landslide. Anh Dao put it to the test at her farm An Nhien after the historic flood in 2017 seeped 12ha of the riverbank area. Before the embankment was constructed, each time the flood came, the banks of the Trem Tay River would recede more than ten meters deep and many villagers determined that they would have to leave sooner or later.

TS. Ngo Anh Dao, the concept designer of the ecological embankment. Photo: Yen Duong

The ecological soft embankment model is the result of many years of observation and research by TS. Anh Dao goes downstream of Thu Bon river. She does not consider this as a new invention but simply a process of restoring indigenous ecosystems.

“This is a very sensitive and fragile area,” said the female landscape planner, when she was under pressure from the water pouring in from the Truong Son mountain range, and the pressure from waves and storms. Just comparing the map of Thu Bon river basin from 1984 with the present, anyone can recognize the appearance, swelling and disappearance of floating dunes. If more than 30 years ago, there were four large and small sand dunes in front of Trem Tay, over time, the side of the mudslide, now they have formed a large dune deviating to the north, causing the flow from upstream to crash into the bank of Trem Tay village and the neighboring Cam Kim commune. Therefore, every time the flood comes, the Trem Tay bank will slide and the other sand dune bank accretes.

The villagers of Trem Tay seem to be too familiar with this harsh law of nature. At the age of 54, Pham Duoc had to move his house twice despite being born and raised in this village. His first home was at the head of the village but by the age of twenty, he was forced to move to the middle of the village. In 2009, the commune authorities urged him to continue to move, but because of “comfortable housing, a garden, a chicken”, he decided to stay. However, after the historic flood in 2017, when the water flooded to 1.6 meters deep, he got scared and decided to demolish the house, sell the land and move to his current home at the end of the village.

“I wanted to build a house to leave for the children, so I accepted it,” he was told. Each time like that, he “is not sad” because “has to accept it.”

Also because of the desire to keep the village and have a passion for planting trees, this builder began to work as TS’s farm housekeeper. Anh Dao from 2016 on a piece of land at the end of the village abandoned because some people have retreated inland like Mr. Can. Others, especially the young, have quit farming because their rice land is either no longer available or salty, and go to work on tourism in Hoi An or Da Nang.

On this wasteland, Mr. Can and other workers have built wooden houses with modern designs, combining the high structure of stilt houses with indigenous materials such as bamboo and grass. The houses are mixed with nursery gardens and research of diversity of plants.

Standing from the house overlooking the river bank is a bamboo forest that villagers planted in the 1980s to prevent floods. “Thanks to this bamboo forest, when the flood comes, the flow will decrease”, he is explained. “Like when water runs through that basket.”

In front of the bamboo forest, along the riverbank is the ecological embankment.

Use “soft” against “hard”

Different from the commonly applied concrete hard revetment in Vietnam, the soft revetment does not resist the destruction of waves and floods but backs and accepts it – more similar to the village motto of living with floods. This 200 years old.

“The current popular philosophy is that people are fighting against nature, conquering nature with hard solutions and ignoring the understanding of coastal ecosystems, the access between water and land”, PhD. Mr. Dao analyzed. “Thinking like conquering nature, using it hard against the power of nature will be terrible because its destructive power will be even greater.”

Principle TS. Cherry mentioned that the law is immutable in physics: punching a wall with your hand will always hurt more if you punch the mattress with the same force. And given the increasing intensity and destructive power of storms and floods due to the effects of climate change, new coping measures are becoming more and more imperative to minimize damage from dike breaks.

Illustration of three-layer ecological soft embankment used to cope with the landslide of TS. Ngo Anh Dao. Illustration: lambinh

In the design of the ecological embankment, the cork tree is TS. Cherry brought back to plant from Quang Tri, is the outer layer of the buffer protecting the village shore. The roots of this plant are of two types. The main root is poked straight down, possibly up to ten meters deep. The secondary roots, also known as lung roots, are precipitated when immature, soft and swaying with the waves. When the tree grows, this lung root hardens, protrudes from the mud about 60-80cm, very hard. Therefore, cork trees have the ability to accumulate mud, hold soil, and reduce the destructive power of underground waves.

Next to the cork layer is a layer of grass, including native grasses such as hammer grass, grass with bald roots that can be up to 3m deep below the ground, next to the pangasius is a two-leafed tree, the roots are even deeper. tens of meters. These are easy-to-live, fast-growing plants with good soil holding capacity.

The last layer is a row of casuarina trees planted from 2017 that are 8m high. In addition to the ability to hold soil, the height and softness of the conifers help to both block waves and windbreak.

These three layers together create a green vegetation reinforced with bamboo biological “lock” layers to support soil retention in the early years when the layers are young, the roots are not deep enough.

With the initial results achieved, TS. Anh Dao is confident that the philosophy behind this model is the right direction for the sensitive downstream areas that are suffering from both natural disasters and natural disasters. The flood discharge of dozens of hydroelectricity upstream; exploitation of sand in the river bed; monoculture agriculture, improper exploitation of groundwater, causing subsidence; along with tourism development, regardless of the fragility of the ground here, all contribute to increasing the risk of landslides in the area, he explained.

Natural balance

Realizing the initial efficiency of the project, in addition to the affordable price – the construction cost of 1 meter of ecological embankment is only 1/5 of the cost of building the concrete embankment – Hoi An government plans to extend 900m of longitudinal embankment. According to the territory of Phuoc Thang village in the neighboring Cam Kim commune, where after the flood in 2017, the bank fell 50 meters deep into the mainland.

However, the ecological embankment is not without its risks. “An embankment requires a tree to develop to a certain extent to be effective,” said Nguyen The Hung, vice president of Hoi An city. This is a fact to consider when choosing the time to start planting trees for ecological embankments because according to the experience of the Hoi An people, every three to five years a big flood will repeat and the poor forest also needs that many years. to be able to cope with floods.

The most obvious evidence is the initial failures in the construction of ecological embankments by TS. Cherry. In fact, the horticultural forest she planted in 2018 was the second test after the failure of 2017, when the historic flood hit and killed the immature cork trees that were only one year old.

Pham Duoc, born and raised in the village of Trem Tay, had to move his house due to the impact of floods and landslides. Photo taken on January 26, 2121 in Trem Tay village (Dien Phuong, Dien Ban district, Quang Nam province). Photo: Yen Duong

Therefore, each ecological embankment requires a deep understanding of the local soil and climate. Invited by the authorities of Dak Nong and Dak Lak to study the replication of an ecological embankment model for the Krong No riverbank, which is suffering from severe landslides, PhD. Anh Dao cannot carry the whole model from An Nhien. The key thing that does not change is the principle of using measures of “soft, back and forth” instead of “forward and conquer”.

Post-flood cleaning in An Nhien continues after Tet. Meanwhile, the poor forest has begun to show signs of revitalization. “Maybe I will leave it alone, the cork tree will grow back on its own, or I will plant more, depending on the budget”. Anh Dao said.

What is important according to the doctor is the long-term perspective. Once the embankment ecosystem is returned to its natural equilibrium, other social and economic benefits will follow.

Since the ecological embankment, shrimp, fish, birds, wild ducks, many insects have created a new source of livelihood for the village. Each spring, “so many birds can not sleep at night,” he shared. The green embankment on the transparent river also contributes to attracting more tourists to visit this ancient village.

If before 2015, Trem Tay land was sold for 1 million / m2, not many people bought, now, the land price has increased 15 times thanks to community tourism projects, resorts and the belief that village land will is kept. Walking around the road surrounded by the tea tree fence of the village, you can see that people are taking advantage of repairing and repainting their houses to make them more stable and spacious. From the past two years, young people working away from home have come back with plans to do tourism and open shops. All just wait for the disease to pass to be ready to revive.
