FPGAs are not as well-known to most people as CPUs and GPUs, but FPGAs are the key platform for functional verification of these well-known chips before mass production. FPGA’s high performance, low latency, repeatable programming and low energy consumption are also the preferred platform for innovative applications. However, the high threshold for FPGA use greatly restricts the development of the FPGA industry. This week, Intel and International Data Corporation (IDC) jointly released the “FPGA Industry Development Status and Talent Cultivation Research Report” (hereinafter referred to as FPGA Talent Report), which pointed out that: Chinese companies generally lack FPGA technical talents, and the lack of talents has become the primary factor in the development of the FPGA industry. Intel saw this problem as early as 2018. At the end of 2018, Intel’s largest FPGA innovation center in the world settled in Chongqing. The goal is to cultivate FPGA talents, build FPGA ecology, and accelerate innovation for China. By 2019, Li Desheng, managing director of Intel’s China Strategic Cooperation and Innovation Business Department and head of Intel’s Innovation Accelerator, clearly stated: “We hope to work with our ecological partners to train more than 10,000 FPGA professionals in China within three years. personnel.” In 2020, Zhang Rui, general manager of Intel FPGA China Innovation Center, said, “The Intel FPGA China Innovation Center series has published 4 books and has been on sale, 2 books are under review, and 2 books are in preparation. FPGA course video learning volume It has exceeded 10,000 times, and more than 5,000 trainees have signed up for the training.” Zhang Rui, general manager of Intel FPGA China Innovation Center This week, Intel launched a special training and delivery cooperation for FPGA talents with many ecological partners in the FPGA Innovation Center, and the FPGA talents trained are very popular. Why did Intel start to “send” FPGA talents when Intel’s FPGA “Ten Thousand Talents Program” goal was reached more than half, and the FPGA series of books were over-published? How scarce is China’s FPGA talents? A serious shortage of FPGA talents above the intermediate level Compared with CPU and GPU, FPGA market is much smaller, but the market scale continues to expand. IDC predicts that by 2024, the global accelerated server market will reach 28.4 billion U.S. dollars, and the global FPGA market will reach 7.155 billion U.S. dollars. Among them, FPGA will occupy 34% of the main market in the network and communication segment by 2024, and at the same time, FPGA acceleration servers will account for 28.3% of the global acceleration server market. The IDC report points out that the compound annual growth rate of the global accelerated server market from 2019 to 2024 is 19%. The higher compound annual growth rate mainly comes from three types of industries. One is industries that require higher information transmission rates, such as communication networks, industrial control, and smart transportation; the other is industries that require higher information processing capabilities. Such as intelligent computing, economics and finance, medical equipment, Internet information industry, etc.; the first category is industries in the stage of innovation/incubation/experimental demonstration, such as high-performance computing in the fields of robots, drones, aerospace, scientific research and engineering. The FPGA talent report points out more specifically the industry sectors with greater development space. Electronic testing equipment, communications and networks, aerospace, and transportation have more than 59% of the development space. Smart logistics, medical equipment, energy and power, e-commerce, games Development, economics and finance also have great potential. The market demand is huge, but talents hinder the development of the FPGA industry. The FPGA talent report pointed out that the current FPGA talent supply in the market can only better meet the demand for junior talents, and more than 70% of the interviewed companies or institutions believe that there is a serious shortage of engineers above the intermediate level, and 63.4% of the companies indicated that they will significantly increase in the future. Recruitment of FPGA-related personnel. Among them, the types of FPGA talents most urgently needed by enterprises are FPGA design talents, basic development, FPGA verification, and peripheral hardware. These types of talents account for more than 10% of the demand for talents. There is also a greater demand for professional theory, software development, and document maintenance talents. The lack of talent also reflects the challenges faced by FPGA talent training. In the IDC report, 60% of the interviewees believe that the lack of a training system, difficulty in satisfying student training, and the disconnect between theory and practice are the biggest challenges faced by colleges in training FPGA talents. Others Challenges include high learning thresholds, long learning cycles, and lack of teachers. Generally speaking, FPGA talent development faces three dilemmas. The first is the training threshold. FPGA application R&D needs to master both development knowledge and application domain knowledge. The second is the training cycle. FPGA R&D requires a long process from entry to proficiency. The third is occupational characteristics. FPGA R&D practitioners need higher energy input. Confined to FPGA development for a long time, the knowledge system is difficult to expand. Intel sends FPGA talents As the world’s leading FPGA company, Intel is naturally well aware of the plight of FPGA development. Therefore, before the recent upsurge of chip talent training, it has already started the cultivation of chip talents and has begun to export FPGA talents to many ecological partners. Zhang Rui announced the latest results at Intel FPGA Innovation Center this week. At present, the Innovation Center has 9 series of 46 courses and has trained more than 5,000 people. He has co-created an FPGA talent training system and established joint laboratories with universities across the country, and published 10 volumes. Intel FPGA China Innovation Center series of books, of which 3 were shortlisted for the National Thirteenth Five-Year Plan, filling the gaps in China’s FPGA+AI interdisciplinary textbooks. In response to the challenge of the lack of a training system for FPGA talent training, Intel FPGA China Innovation Center has established a talent training and certification system, which are: elementary, intermediate, advanced software direction, advanced hardware direction, and expert level. Each level corresponds to a different course system. “Different from the chip talents cultivated in schools, the talents we cultivate are more application-oriented. Compared with the training institutions that train application-oriented talents, our curriculum system is very complete and systematic. This is why we have spent a lot of energy publishing 10 This textbook, organize the reasons for the courseware. Our curriculum system can not only cultivate introductory and junior talents, but also help intermediate and advanced talents to further improve. Another very important point is that our starting point for training talents is not for profit, but It is to cultivate ecology and stimulate innovation.” Zhang Rui said. However, the establishment of the curriculum system of the Intel FPGA Innovation Center is actually constantly improving in the process of exploration. Zhang Rui shared an example. At the beginning of their online course, many students and teachers’ feedback was difficult to understand. After accepting suggestions from teachers and students, they re-recorded and uploaded all online course videos so that students can Get started easily with zero FPGA threshold. Compatible with the systematic curriculum system, there is also a complete assessment and certification method. The primary level is online written examination, the intermediate level is online written examination + experimental evaluation, the advanced level is online written examination + single project experimental evaluation + interview, and the expert level is online. Written examination + comprehensive project test + interview. “The reason why our certification is so complicated is that FPGA is a system engineering and requires hands-on ability. As long as it involves environmental support, it can only be assessed offline. In 2020, more than 70 colleges and enterprises across the country successfully obtained the certificate. In the future, we hope to cooperate with universities to further promote this certification and gradually become an authoritative certification.” Zhang Rui explained. As for the other big challenge of FPGA talent training-the disconnection between theory and practice, it is also a challenge for talent training in the entire chip industry. Intel has given full play to the advantages of chip providers and provided online and offline opportunities in the process of FPGA talent training. Practical training. For example, online training courses for colleges and universities are license plate recognition projects based on HLS technology, and offline training projects are more abundant, including FPGA edge detection, HLS-based handwriting recognition, license plate recognition, etc. If it is a three-month full-time trainee, not only will the 15-person small class mode be adopted, there will also be a lot of practical training to improve the practical ability of the trainees. Li Chenxin, a fresh graduate of the full-time training course (Phase 3), told Leifeng.com, “When I first started learning the basic language of FPGA, I didn’t have a deep conception of its parallel processing characteristics. Later, the project displayed by the LED light gave me a deep understanding. The FPGA signal parallel processing. In addition, the mode of small class teaching can radiate to every student.” Leifeng.com learned that the 3-month off-the-job training course is to cultivate the compound talents needed by the company. It is divided into five stages, from hardware to software, from theory to practical projects, from professional knowledge to employment guidance, to ensure the quality of talent training. At the same time, it outputs the applied talents needed by the enterprise. For experienced engineers in enterprises, Intel FPGA Innovation Center can customize one-to-three-month courses with enterprises, and use Intel’s training platform to help engineers improve their skills. Of course, from the certification system of Intel FPGA Innovation Center, we can also see the practical ability of FPGA talents cultivated by Intel. Now that many talents have been trained, why do you talk about talent transfer until more than half of the talent training goal is reached? Zhang Rui explained: “We have received a lot of positive feedback from our graduates in the first two terms. In addition, many employers have asked me to reserve talents. With these large amounts of positive feedback, we are confident to continue. Of course, we also hope that Through the launch ceremony of talent transfer, more employers know that we have cultivated a lot of FPGA talents, and hope that more students or engineers who want to enter this industry can improve themselves and become the talents needed by enterprises.” It is reported that at the special job fair on the day of the talent transfer ceremony of Intel FPGA China Innovation Center, all trainees of the training class received employment letters of intent signed by at least one company on the spot, and the trainees received employment letters of intent signed by multiple companies. These companies include Intel’s FPGA Innovation Center’s first batch of cooperative companies, Wright Cloud Technology Co., Ltd., Junlong Technology Co., Ltd., Ruisuo Electronic Technology Co., Ltd., Radium Intelligent System Co., Ltd., and Chuling Information Technology Co. The company, Yuxin Micro Technology Co., Ltd., Putai Information Technology Co., Ltd. and other advanced electronic technology companies. summary Talents are the core factor restricting the development of my country’s chip industry. Therefore, the cultivation of talents has become a hot topic after the rapid development of the domestic chip industry for a few years. As a chip company, Intel has no obligation to train chip talents for the industry, but the lack of talents restricts the development of the FPGA industry, so Intel started talent training for FPGA ecology and innovation in 2018. Intel is a top expert in the chip field, but lacks experience in chip talent training. The Intel FPGA Innovation Center, which has trained more than 5,000 FPGA talents, proves that Intel has figured out a way to train FPGA talents, and its popularity in training talents shows market acceptance and recognition. The product technology is leading and the talents are ready, what can be expected next is the ecological and innovative progress of Intel FPGA.Lei Feng

Edit | Heart edge

News on June 19th, according to Reuters, the state of Bavaria in southern Germany is negotiating with the American chip manufacturer Intel on the establishment of a chip factory.

Currently, Intel has a chip factory in Ireland. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger once said that he hopes to receive 8 billion euros (about 9.5 billion US dollars) of financial subsidies from the European Union to build a new chip factory in Europe.

▲The construction process of Intel’s chip factory in Ireland

For Intel’s construction of a chip factory in Bavaria, Bavarian Minister of Economy Hubert Aiwanger (Hubert Aiwanger) strongly supports this.

He mentioned that Intel’s construction of a large-scale semiconductor factory in the local area is a good business opportunity for Bavaria.

Evanger said that Bavaria proposed to use an abandoned air force base between the two cities of Penzing-Landsberg in the west of Munich as a possible location for the chip factory. It is reported that this plan is supported by the Penzing and Landsberg councils. ▲Hubert Evanger, Minister of Economy of Bavaria Bavaria is located in the southeastern part of Germany and is a relatively developed area in Germany. The headquarters of many companies such as BMW, Audi, Siemens and Infineon are located there. In addition, the Leibniz Supercomputing Center is also located in Bavaria. Its SuperMUC-NG supercomputer uses Intel’s Xeon scalable processor and ranks 15th in the global supercomputing rankings. Conclusion: The subsidy policy may determine whether the chip factory will land in Bavaria Bavaria is a relatively developed region in Germany, and its infrastructure is relatively complete, which is conducive to the operation of Intel’s chip factory. Intel previously stated that it will open its existing factories to automotive chip companies and has already contacted some component manufacturers. If Intel builds a factory locally, it may strengthen its ties with automakers such as BMW and Audi. But on the other hand, chip factories cost a lot of money, so Intel has been seeking financial subsidies from the European government. Ultimately, whether the Intel factory will land in Bavaria is largely determined by what policy conditions Germany and Bavaria provide to Intel. Source: Reuters, SwordsToday.ie

According to a report from Mercury Research, an independent research and insights company for the PC-related semiconductor and components market, AMD’s x86 CPU market share increased to 8.9% in the first quarter. For the first time of 2021, this number represents strong growth compared to leading chipmaker Intel.

AMD recorded 8.9% growth in the first quarter of 2021, the highest in 15 years In 2020 and into the first quarter of 2021, AMD has focused on high-end desktop CPUs and EPYC chips for servers. The first quarter of the year recorded a record increase of 41% over the same period last year, which is the highest number for the CPU market in 25 years. AMD’s biggest growth most recently came in 2006, when the chipmaker saw its server CPU market share increase from about 5-7% to about 22% in just 18 months with the 64-bit Opteron processor. bits. Then, Intel overtook AMD to let Intel regain its leadership in technology and hold it for 10 years. AMD has launched EPYC Milan and it is used for data centers and supercomputers. Consistent growth in the first quarter will propel AMD further in its goal of becoming a leader in the server CPU segment. The choice of EPYC chip has proven that AMD’s direction is appropriate in recent times. One question is what the growth of ARM architecture means for ARM and Intel in the near future, while Nvidia, Microsoft and others are gradually moving to produce ARM-based CPUs. As for Intel, most recently launched Rocket Lake processors and they compete directly with AMD Ryzen 5000. However, Intel’s chips are more commonly found in retail stores at very affordable prices. competition while AMD’s chips are still rare on store shelves. AMD still has a strong portfolio of next-gen EPYC CPUs such as the 4th Gen EPYC Genoa chips that are expected to be announced next year and will feature the all-new Zen 4 core architecture and a host of other features to addresses Intel Sapphire Rapids & Granite Rapids Xeon CPUs.

Apple will use its own 5G chip for iPhones in 2023. Photo: Macrumors TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple’s first 5G iPhone 12s reached consumers last year. Apple’s entire iPhone model is dependent on Qualcomm chips, and now Apple is designing its own 5G chip for use in its latest iPhones in 2023. Apple currently uses Qualcomm modems, including the Snapdragon X55 modem in iPhone 12 models. In 2019, a legal agreement between Apple and Qualcomm revealed that Apple will likely use the Snapdragon X60 modem on iPhone models. 2021, followed by the Snapdragon X65 modem for the iPhone 2022. Apple’s roadmap is that by 2023, it is likely that the iPhone will use the Snapdragon X70 modem with Apple working to make its own 5G chip, it is unlikely that Snapdragon will be available on the iPhone model in the next years according to the. A deal between Apple and Intel worth $1 billion brought Apple the 5G modem business in 2019. This is an opportunity for Apple to ditch the Qualcomm chip to use its own 5G modem. In recent years, Apple has continued to expand around internal chips for its other product lines. Most recently, the Apple-designed M1 Chip is available on select Mac models and is currently on the iPad Pro. Apple will also gradually phase out Intel chips in its latest product lines. It is known that Apple’s Modem will probably be manufactured by longtime chip manufacturing partner TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor company.

When Specter (a class of critical vulnerabilities affecting modern microprocessors) was publicly disclosed in January 2018, researchers said, it wasn’t easy to fix and would haunt us for years to come. a long time.

The security hole exists for more than 3 years, but Intel has not been able to fix it. Photo: CIO Indeed, 3 years have passed, and there is still no end to the vulnerability. Meanwhile, experts from the University of Virginia and the University of California, San Diego, have discovered a new attack method that bypasses all current Specter protections built into the chip. This attack method has the potential to put almost any system – desktops, laptops, cloud servers and smartphones – once again at risk. Revealing Specter ushered in a wave of more powerful attacks, allowing malicious code to directly read passwords, encryption keys, and other valuable information from the computer’s kernel memory. Although chip manufacturers such as Intel, ARM and AMD already know this and combine defenses to reduce the threat from vulnerabilities, the methods have not yielded the desired effect. A Specter attack is capable of tricking the processor into executing instructions along a wrong path, the researchers say. Even though the processor recovers and completes its task correctly, hackers can still access confidential data while the processor goes in the wrong direction. The new attack method exploits what is called a micro-operator buffer (called micro-ops), an on-chip component that breaks machine instructions into simpler instructions and speeds up computation, like a secondary channel to reveal confidential information. Micro-op cache is built into Intel processors, manufactured since 2011. According to researchers at the University of Virginia, Intel’s defense proposal against Specter (called LFENCE) is to place sensitive code in a waiting area until security checks are done and only then the code Only sensitive is allowed to execute. However, research has shown how attackers can steal information through micro-op caching and use it as a secret channel. Although exploiting the Specter vulnerability is very difficult, the researchers say that with computers with a lot of sensitive data, hackers do not mind the difficulty. To protect the system from the new attack, the researchers propose to clear the micro-ops cache. This is a technical solution that comes at the expense of performance benefits. According to the researchers, micro-op caching has some dangerous effects. First, it ignores all caching reduction techniques such as side channels. Second, attacks in this zone go undetected like an existing attack or malware. Third, because the micro-op cache is at the front of the path, prior to execution, Intel’s Specter protections or recommendations to limit cache updates are still compromised. public.

Industry “commanders” in the US have voiced the warning of serious consequences caused by the global shortage of chips. Photo: AFP Semiconductor chip supplies have been in short supply for months and the situation shows no sign of abating, prompting insiders to visualize it into the chipageddon crisis. It is a combination of ‘microchip’ (semiconductor chip) and ‘armageddon’ (which excessively means war of destruction). Mr. Glenn O’Donnell, deputy research director at consulting firm Forrester believes that the thirst for semiconductor chips could last until 2023. “As demand will continue to increase while supply will remain limited, We expect this shortfall to continue into 2022 and into 2023, “commented Glenn O’Donnell on his blog. According to the expert’s argument, demand for computers – products using the most advanced chips – will slightly decrease next year but not by much, but data centers, where the machines are located. will be the chip-eaters next year. Mr. Glenn O’Donnell explained: “The deviceization of things is an irresistible trend, coupled with the continued growth of cloud computing and cryptocurrency mining, we see nothing but a boom. short-term explosion on chip demand “. Meanwhile, Mr. Patrick Armstrong, Information Technology Director of Plurimi Investment Managers Fund commented on CNBC that the global shortage of chips will last 18 months. “Not just the auto industry. It’s the phone. It’s also the IoE [một khái niệm kết nối rộng hơn Internet vạn vật (IoT), xoay quanh 4 yếu tố chính: Con người (People), sự vật (Things), dữ liệu (Data) và quá trình (Process)]. There are a lot more products that use chips now than before. “” All of them are connected to the internet, “said Patrick Armstrong. The auto industry has been most adversely affected by the global thirst for chips. Earlier this month, the world’s largest chip maker TSMC (Taiwan) said it could meet the chip demand of the auto industry next June. However, Mr. Armstrong said that this statement by TSMC is too ambitious. “If you listen to Ford, BMW, and Volkswagen, they all claim that there are bottlenecks in capacity and they can’t get the chips needed to build new cars,” Armstrong argued. Meanwhile, Gartner Consulting and Information Technology Research is more optimistic that chip shortages will last throughout 2021, affecting all chip lines and pushing chip prices higher. Gartner analyst Alan Priestley said that chip shortages could improve in some sectors / areas over the next six months, but could continue into 2022. “It (chip shortage – Editor)) will not last any longer, “said Alan Priestley. “The semiconductor industry is increasing capacity, but it still takes time,” he said. In fact, in March Intel announced plans to spend $ 20 billion on two new chip factories in the state of Arizona. The group also said it could build a factory in Europe if it could raise funds for public investment. “Those things will take two or three years before we start realizing their effect,” said Alan Priestley, who said that the investment plans could actually meet demand for semiconductors in future. Mr. Reinhard Ploss, CEO of chip maker Infineon (Germany) last week said that the semiconductor industry is in the region without privileges; at the same time warned to rebalance the demand and supply of semiconductors “obviously will take time”. “I think two years is too long, but we are sure that the current situation will extend into 2022,” said Ploss. “I think the additional capacity will be realized… Hopefully the situation will be more balanced in the next calendar year,” added the German CEO. Wenzhe Zhao, director of the global strategy and economics division at Credit Suisse, said that the shortage in chip supply led to speculation on chip-making hoarding and widening the gap. amid increasing chip demand and supply remains stagnant. According to Wenzhe Zhao, the new semiconductor manufacturing capacity will not be effective until 2022 or later. Wenzhe Zhao noted that there is little action he can do to address the shortage of semiconductors, aside from adjusting orders, production schedules and prices.

In the early morning of April 23, the semiconductor giant Intel announced the first quarter of 2021 financial report. Although the overall performance exceeded market expectations, the revenue of the data center business, which is regarded as the growth locomotive, fell 20% year-on-year. As of press time, Intel fell 2.17% after the market.
According to Intel’s disclosure, revenue in the first fiscal quarter was US$19.7 billion, a decrease of 1% compared to US$19.8 billion in the same period last year; net profit was US$3.4 billion, a decrease of 41% compared to US$5.7 billion in the same period last year; Not in accordance with the General Accounting Standards, net profit was US$5.7 billion, a decrease of 6% from the US$6.1 billion in the same period last year.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger (Pat Gelsinger) said that the global chip supply shortage may continue for two more years. Kissinger said that the supply constraints will continue until more production capacity goes online to meet chip demand. Data center business is challenged Data center business has become the main source of bad earnings this time. Intel’s financial report shows that the data center group’s revenue in the first quarter was US$5.6 billion, a 20% decrease from US$7 billion in the same period last year. The decline in demand for cloud computing chips and the decline in government and enterprise demand caused by the epidemic have all triggered a decline in data center revenue . As the group’s highest profitability business, the decline in data center profits also dragged down the overall gross profit margin, which fell by 5 percentage points year-on-year to 55.2%. From the industry perspective, Intel is undergoing a transformation from a “PC center” to a “data center”. But in the era when data has become the “new oil”, it is not only Intel that sees the cake of data centers, but Nvidia and AMD are trying to further seize this market through mergers and acquisitions. On the other hand, Intel’s customers in the data center field, Google, Amazon, and Alibaba, have all begun to develop their own chips. “Any customized chip is a differentiated competition for them. For them, the chip is a strategy, not a route choice.” Vice President of Intel Marketing Group and General Manager of China Industry Solutions Department Liang Yali responded to this earlier. On April 8, Intel launched the third-generation Xeon scalable processor and a series of related product portfolios, which were regarded by the outside world as a counterattack to AMD’s attack. Among them, Ice Lake is Intel’s first server chip using 10nm. In addition, in the financial report data, Intel’s personal computer chip business revenue was 10.6 billion US dollars, an increase of 8% over the same period last year. The overall demand for this major notebook computer market has increased. However, it is also worth noting that the past high-end product line cooperation On the other hand, Apple has also begun to use more self-developed chips in the Mac product line. In the entire Intel’s quarterly report, the biggest bright spot is that the autonomous driving system company Mobileye’s revenue rose by 48% year-on-year to 377 million US dollars, and its operating profit rose by 67% year-on-year. “Lack of core” trend will continue At present, the shortage of chips has gradually spread from some links such as foundry, packaging and testing to the entire industry chain, involving multiple consumer fields such as automobiles, mobile phones, and notebooks. As one of the main players in the chip supply chain, Intel claims that the global chip supply shortage may continue for two more years. Prior to this, in order to reverse Intel’s decline in competition in the semiconductor industry, Kissinger proposed the IDM 2.0 plan. In the financial report statement, Kissinger also stated that this year will be an “important year” for Intel. From an industry perspective, Intel represents the IDM (Integrated Device Manufacture) model. The manufacturer is responsible for the entire process of the chip from design to finished product. This model can ensure the integration of the product from design to manufacturing. But in terms of iteration efficiency and cost, the Foundry model represented by TSMC is currently more mainstream. In order to change the current foundry pattern based on TSMC, Intel plans to invest approximately US$20 billion in the construction of two new factories (fabs) in Arizona, the United States. Intel stated that it hopes to become a major provider of foundry production capacity and provide services to customers around the world from the United States and Europe. Research organization TrendForce said that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will begin using the 5nm process to produce Intel’s Core i3 chips in the second half of this year. But judging from the latest news, Intel seems to want to increase its manufacturing capacity centered on the United States in order to reduce its dependence on Asian manufacturers. For Intel at the moment, the biggest problem is that the expansion investment plan may take several years to provide profits for it. In the financial report, Intel expects Q2 revenue of US$17.8 billion, slightly higher than the expected US$17.55 billion; however, the EPS forecast of US$1.05 is slightly lower than expected, and the company explained that it was affected by production capacity expansion expenses. As of press time, Intel reported $62.57 per share. It placed an order of 1.77% on Thursday and dropped 2.17% after the market.

Intel is pushing partners to sell Intel Evo laptops using Tiger Lake chips. In 2020, Intel launched the 11th generation Intel Core mobile processors collectively known as Tiger Lake. This new chip is introduced with outstanding performance, real-world battery life of 9 hours or more using FHD screen, fast charging and stable response. The Intel Evo concept is a standard set for all high-end laptops equipped with this new line of Intel chips. Continuing from 2020, this year Intel has a plan to develop and boost sales for the Intel Evo brand. Intel’s partners will also be part of the plan, and Intel wants to give them promotional tools to sell more devices. Reply CRN Steve Long, Intel’s global vice president of computer sales, said that this year will be the year of investing in customers’ businesses. In addition to investments in Intel partners and products or programs, but also in market access. The tools Intel says will be the most advanced tools that give partners access to schools or educational institutions. These are the places that will need a lot of laptop devices to organize teaching for students. According to statistics, with 1.6 billion students in the world, only 5 out of 100 students have laptops to use. Alder Lake will be Intel’s next generation of chips to appear next year. The business segment also has room for growth in laptop sales as the need to work remotely from home is increasing and becoming a trend for many companies. As for the next generation of Intel chips, at the end of Q2, the Intel Lake H45 laptop will be released. For desktops, Intel will also introduce the first 10 nanometer technology Alder Lake processors. Demand for a laptop or Chromebook is growing, especially in the second half of 2021 and into 2022, as well as in the following years. Intel is expanding its policy to reach customers in different segments and deliver high quality products.

The world’s largest contract chip maker TSMC warns global shortages of chips can last until 2022. Intel even warns this situation could last through 2022 when demand for chips. beyond production capacity.

The severe shortage of chips globally has forced many car, smartphone, laptop and home appliance manufacturers to cut production (Image: Source Today)

TSMC, the world’s largest contract chip maker, has just said the status chip supply shortage globally This could be extended until 2022. TSMC also said it is planning to invest an additional $ 100 billion over the next three years to increase the output of its existing 5mm chip and the 3mm is expected to be final test production this year to meet the increasing demand for chips around the world.

This TSMC plan is currently attracting the special attention of partners and customers such as Apple and Qualcomm. Mr. CC Wei, CEO of TSMC, said “We are hiring thousands of people and expanding our capabilities in multiple locations”.

Demand for chips, especially the next generation of chips, is booming as the trend of working from home becomes more common in the world under the effects of the pandemic, driving demand for electronics as smartphones and laptops soar.

The global shortage of chips has forced some automakers, smartphone makers, computer assemblers, and home appliance makers to cut production. . Auto maker General Motors and Ford announced plans last week to shut down plants in North America due to a shortage of chip supplies.

Meanwhile, TSMC’s profit in Q1 / 2021 reached $ 4.93 billion, up 19.4% year-on-year, much higher than observers’ forecast. TSMC forecasts 2/2021 revenue will range from $ 12.9 billion to $ 13.2 billion, compared with $ 10.38 billion in the same period last year. It also raised its 2021 revenue growth forecast to 20% from its previous forecast.

TSMC CEO CC Wei said that customers are increasingly looking to hoard more chips to ensure production stability due to geopolitical uncertainties and pandemics. Therefore, TSMC’s production activity is continuously in state “stress” during the past period. It is now increasing spending on research, development and manufacturing of new generation chips to about $ 30 billion this year, compared with $ 25 billion expected earlier this year.

Analysts now expect TSMC’s production expansion to soon meet demand for next-generation chips as 5G technology and artificial intelligence applications become more widely adopted.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger also shared concerns, saying that the shortage of chips in the world could last until after 2022 when demand is still outstripping production capacity. Semiconductor companies can implement some short-term solutions to ease the problem, but a full solution to the shortage problem will take longer, said Pat Gelsinger.

“I think it will take a few years until the problem is completely resolved. It takes a few years to build supply capacity.”, according to Mr. Pat Gelsinger.

US President Joe Biden holds an electronic chip during a discussion session on solving chip shortages of US businesses on February 24, 2021 (Image: Reuters)

Intel has been in discussions with auto parts manufacturers and suppliers about steps it can take to increase production of car chips in the coming months. The company also aims to start increasing the supply of additional chips within the next six to nine months. Last month, Intel announced that it would spend $ 20 billion to build two factories in the state of Arizona (USA).

Professor Willy Shih from Harvard Business School, which specializes in technology and manufacturing, says chip shortages are becoming more turbulent as manufacturers are ordering chips from multiple factories at the same time because of them. Not sure which order will be executed. Chaotic orders are leaving chipmakers uncertain where they will need to allocate supplies to meet actual demand in the short term.

In the United States, to secure more domestic chip supplies in the long term, President Joe Biden’s administration is proposing a $ 50 billion financing package to subsidize semiconductor manufacturing facilities. This proposal is currently receiving wide support from both Republicans and Democrats.
