Located in southwestern Japan, the island that forbids women from entering is known to many as Okinoshima. For hundreds of years, only men have visited this island. In 2017, the Japanese island of Okinoshima was recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage. Therefore, the public is more curious about Okinoshima Island. According to historical accounts, on the island there is a sacred temple Munakata Taisha Okitsumiya worshiping a sea goddess. This is the place to perform peaceful prayers for seafarers and successful businessmen in the 4th and 9th centuries. Every year, visitors can only go to Okinoshima island on a single day – May 27. Number of visitors is limited to 200 people. Before going to the island, the male tourists will perform the ritual of bleaching by removing the entire outfit on the body and soaking in the sea water. Once completed, they could set foot on the island. After leaving Okinoshima Island, male tourists are not allowed to bring anything as souvenirs nor disclose any information during a trip to the holy island for men only. As for Okinoshima Island’s ban on women, many argue that this tradition is practiced in order to protect the weak against a dangerous journey across the sea. The exact reason for the ban on women on the island is still unknown. Even so, many people are still curious about the activities that take place on Okinoshima Island – which is only for men.
