A test report commissioned by the EU does not consider the weed killer glyphosate to be carcinogenic or dangerous to the genetic makeup. Nevertheless, the drug will probably disappear from the market in Europe.

From Michael Heussen, WDR

The specialist authorities from France, Sweden, Hungary and the Netherlands come to terms with glyphosate to a clear result : The pesticide is not carcinogenic, it does not damage the genetic material and it is neither dangerous for human organs nor for the hormonal balance. The four national authorities had assessed the safety of glyphosate on behalf of the European Commission on the basis of existing study results. You confirm the findings of test authorities around the world.

Nevertheless, it can be assumed that the drug will disappear from the market sooner or later. “Glyphosate is socially dead,” said a farmer official in the run-up to the farmers’ day in Berlin. The public had long since made its judgment – even with solid scientific arguments, the majority of consumers could not be convinced of the harmlessness of the substance. Since 2015, the judgment of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which belongs to the World Health Organization (WHO), has been hovering over the evaluation process like a sword of Damocles: Glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic”.

Cancer risk weed killer? New glyphosate lawsuit against Bayer

The Bayer Group will not get rid of the burdens caused by the takeover of the US agrochemical company Monsanto.

“Very low probability”

It is hardly surprising that the glyphosate producer Bayer sees it differently and welcomes the positive study results that have now been published. The chemical giant, which with the US-American Monsanto group also took over its glyphosate-containing bestseller Roundup, also rejects another argument – that the herbicide threatens biodiversity.

“Evaluated scientific studies as well as publicly available research reports show only a very low probability that the proper use of glyphosate-containing pesticides has indirect effects on the biodiversity of most food chains,” says the company. For example, the effects on microorganisms living in the soil, worms, birds, pollinating insects such as honey bees, frogs and other amphibians as well as fish have been investigated, according to a Bayer spokesman. So could it happen that glyphosate may also be used in the European Union beyond the approval period that expires at the end of 2022? Much speaks against it.

Federal government expects glyphosate to be phased out by 2024

The Federal Environment Ministry, led by Svenja Schulze (SPD), firmly expects that no more glyphosate-containing pesticides may be used from January 1, 2024 at the latest after the end of the one-year transition period. “In agreement with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, we continue to assume that the Federal Government (…) has decided to phase out glyphosate use in accordance with EU law,” it says WDR -Inquiry . About the corresponding amending regulation the Federal Council will decide next Friday. Until the end of the transition period, the application “may only take place if there are no alternative options, for example in the case of weeds that are difficult to control or areas at risk of erosion” – so it is in the voting proposal. Its use on areas that serve the general public, as well as in house and allotment gardens, is completely forbidden.

The pesticide glyphosate is controversial and can be found almost everywhere: in milk, grain and beer.

No further approval expected at EU level

Federal Minister of Agriculture Julia Klöckner (CDU) has also emphasized several times, a spokeswoman for her ministry told the WDR “It cannot be assumed that there will still be a majority after 2022 in favor of an extension of the glyphosate approval at EU level”.

In 2017, the dispute over glyphosate between the ministries almost led to a coalition crisis in Berlin. Because the former Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt (CSU) voted “yes” in the responsible EU committee in Brussels , although the then Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks (SPD) strictly against an extension of the approval for glyphosate was. The different evaluations of the current incumbents are not so obvious. But in the letters of reply to the questions of the WDR There are differences: “Glyphosate-containing pesticides are important for soil-conserving and water-saving cultivation of arable land, especially in areas prone to erosion,” writes the Klöckner spokeswoman. Schulze’s spokesman, on the other hand, emphasizes the dangers for biodiversity: “As a total herbicide, glyphosate destroys all plants indiscriminately and thus destroys the food and livelihood for many insect species such as butterflies and, indirectly, for field birds such as the skylark.”

EU assessment expected in 2022

At the European level, the European Food Safety Authority EFSA and the European Chemicals Agency ECHA will start public participation at the beginning of September – results are expected in one year.

Bayer AG continues to rely on the controversial herbicide. Europe does not play a major role as a sales market. The agricultural countries in North and South America are more important. In the USA around ten billion euros have to be paid in the context of a settlement to 96,000 plaintiffs who blame glyphosate for their cancer, and billions more will be due for future plaintiffs . Bayer therefore wants to limit its use for private customers – but Roundup should continue to be used in large-scale agriculture. Only the warning notices should be made clearly more visible. glyphosate The weed killer glyphosate was developed by Bayer subsidiary Monsanto and marketed under the brand name Roundup. The herbicide is also manufactured by other companies, as the patent has expired for years. Bayer is faced with around 9,300 plaintiffs because of the weed killer in the United States, as glyphosate is suspected of being carcinogenic. This is based on the assessment of the International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC), which classified the active ingredient as “probably carcinogenic” in 2015. The Bayer Group always emphasizes that glyphosate is safe when used properly and relies on a large number of scientific studies.

At the end of 2017, the EU Commission extended the approval of glyphosate by five years and now has to make a new decision. A first round of talks is to take place in September and then the EU member states will be involved. Against this background, the EU Commission commissioned the assessment group for glyphosate (consisting of the testing authorities in France, Hungary, the Netherlands and Sweden) to prepare a draft of the risk assessment. This 11,000-page draft was submitted to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in mid-June 2021. A final recommendation from EFSA can be expected in the second half of 2022 after the submission has been examined

Seed treatment methods using Neonicotinoids, aimed at combating a wide range of harmful insects, are currently raising many questions both economically and environmentally.
Crop yield increases

According to scientists, the reason farming has to use Neonicotinoids is to combat the many predators that are ready to pounce on corn or soybean seeds, every time they are sown in the ground. Seeds are impregnated with drugs before sowing. Photo: Scientific Beekeeping What are neonicotinoids? Neonicotinoid has been banned for use in Australia and Europe since 2013. This is a pesticide derived from nicotine (the addictive substance found in tobacco), the way to use is to dissolve in water and spray on plants. for the plants to absorb themselves, forming an artificial “immune system” to protect the crops. Neoincotinoids are thought to be effective against pests and insects, but are safe for mammals. However, because of its strong effect on insects, it also affects bees directly, reducing the number of pollinators. This pesticide is said to reduce the sperm count of male bees by up to 40%, as well as reduce their lifespan from an average of 22 days to 15 days, thus reducing the chances of male bees fertilizing the queen bee. also decreased. Besides disease, soil-dwelling pests such as helminths and larvae can also damage seeds and seedlings, along with terrestrial insects such as bean leaf beetles and aphids. seeds and saplings. Therefore, in the field of seed treatment against insects and diseases, farmers often treat seeds in combination with fungicides (IST) to help plants sprout straight and grow early. It is easy to mention some of the popular Neonicotinoid IST methods such as Imidacloprid (Gaucho, Bayer Crop Science), Clothianidin (Poncho, BASF) and Thiamethoxam (Cruiser, Syngenta)… Seth Naeve, an agronomist specializing in soybean research at the University of Minnesota Extension (USA), said that Neonicotinoid insecticides are highly water-soluble, helping to activate protection from insects. Great early season. Shawn Potter, Syngenta’s head of seed care product marketing, said that the growth of the seeds after treatment was driven in part by previous seasons. “Early seeding from a wet, cool, or both, seeds and seedlings will be exposed to various diseases. “Without seed treatment, crops could be damaged early on,” said Mr Potter. Nick Tinsley, BASF technical specialist, added: “Farmers and retailers alike can easily treat corn and soybean seeds with Neonicotinoid insecticides as well as fungicides from the company. producers to protect crops”. For decades, seed companies have treated corn with fungicides. However, IST only started to be added to the fungicide seed treatment of soybeans in the early 2000s. Studies have demonstrated that a combination of seed treatment with both fungicides and insecticides increases soybean yield per acre by 2 bushels (equivalent to 72.74 kg/0.4 ha). According to Mr. Potter, in general, each “shift” of treating soybean pest/mushroom combos will cost from 10 to 12 USD per seed unit (ranging from 80,000 to 140,000 seeds/0.4 ha). That’s because 70% of treatment costs go to pesticides, while the profit-taking rate per acre is between $16 and $17. This assumes that soybeans cost $12 per bushel and that the cost of the pesticide seed treatment is between $7 and $7.50 per seed unit. Entomologists in the Midwest and South America have also observed that the average soybean yield spike of 2 bushels per acre from this combination. “Some years are higher, some years are lower,” says Sebe Brown, an entomologist at the University of Louisiana. Responses tended to be higher in cases where soybeans were planted early, two crops, or planted after a cover crop.” Gus Lorenz, a scientist at the University of Arkansas, adds: “Companies have provided growers with insurance to maintain good standing. At current seed prices, the cost of treating seeds with pesticides is a good investment.” A synthesis of studies in a 2019 report representing agronomists and entomologists from 14 universities found that the best recorded soybean yield was an increase of 3.3 bushels per acre. after using the combined seed treatment solution. However, in some cases in Minnesota, the benefits are so small that it is argued that farmers should not be encouraged to use seed treatments or should apply them selectively. Concerns Previously, scientists believed that neonicotinoid pesticides were the main cause of the decline in bee populations and pollinators worldwide. A few years ago, the United Nations published alarming figures: In the first 10 years of the 21st century, the number of bees in the world has decreased by 85% in the Middle East, about 30% in the US and Europe. Neonicotinoids are likened to “birth control pills” for bees and reduce the population of bees. Photo: GCM Bees are the intermediate species that help pollinate more than 75% of the world’s food and fruit crops, so a decrease in the number of bees also means a reduced crop or even a crop failure. However, long-term studies by Syngenta suggest that the health effects of bees are negligible when using Neonicotinoid seed treatments to kill insects. According to Mr. Potter, what many experts agree on is that the health of bees depends on the interaction of factors such as parasites, disease, nutritional health and weather phenomena. A 2019 study published in the journal Scientific Reports detailed the effects that imidacloprid had on white-tailed deer. When imidacloprid (an insecticide that acts as an insect CNS toxin, belonging to the genus Neonicotinoids) was increased in the animal’s spleen, factors such as progeny viability, length of jawbone, body weight and visceral weight all decreased. Records show that at least 60% of white-tailed deer killed indicate the presence of Imidacloprid. According to expert Jonathan Lundgren, all insecticides can negatively impact mammals and bees. “The use of insecticides is so widespread these days that they are present in almost every growing system across the United States and are truly binding. These insecticides are affecting ecosystems in ways that we could not have foreseen.” Meanwhile, the companies that manufacture and trade in Neonicotinoid seed treatments have always denied this and asserted that “the products are safe if used according to the instructions on the label”. Compounds such as polymers coat the seeds or products like Bayer Fluency Agent Advanced to help prevent release into the environment, said Chip Graham, Bayer Crop Science’s North American director of seed development. “Initially we had really low dust levels, but these products ensure that pesticides remain on the seeds and reduce contamination levels during the growing process,” said Mr. What is the future of farming? Instead of treating seeds with neonicotinoid insecticides, Mr. Lundgren called for regenerative methods, such as tilling and changing seasons, increasing crop diversity as well as reducing pest pressure. bugs, insects. “Farmers need to understand that these seed treatments really don’t help them much,” said Lundgren. Neonicotinoid pesticides are believed to reduce bee pollinators, threatening food security. Photo: TN Meanwhile, expert Graham said that banning this seed treatment would be detrimental to farmers because “there are currently no foliar sprays to treat early-season insects as a rescue application”, so ” Seed treatment in this way is most effective to provide activity against early-season pests of maize and soybean.” Agronomist Naeve said: “They’re a good example of how the best tools we’ve ever had in agriculture, but it’s not a good idea to treat the entire soybean acreage. They can be a double-edged sword.”

Beetles, Dangerous Cane Destroyers

The sugarcane beetle species mainly include the black scarab, the brown beetle and the large brown hairy beetle, which often arise and cause strong damage in sandy soil, riverbank soil, soil with light mechanical composition, or on specialized cultivation areas, growing sugarcane for many years, not rotating crops with other crops. NASU technicians check for insects entering the lamp trap. Photo: NASU. The life cycle of these beetles lasts from 365 to 720 days, going through 4 stages: egg, larva (worm), pupa and adult. Over the years, Nghe An Sugarcane Company Limited (NASU) has researched and applied integrated measures to effectively manage sugarcane beetles in the company’s raw sugarcane areas. This is the result that NASU has studied the management of sugarcane beetles in many countries such as China, Thailand, Indonesia… to apply on NASU’s sugarcane material area. Mr. Nguyen Hoang Son Phong, engineer of NASU said that sugarcane field was damaged by beetle larvae, yield decreased by 13-54%, sugar decreased from 11-57%. The original cane is more severely damaged by beetles than silk cane. Larvae (larvae) hatch from eggs, live in the soil for an average of 240 – 480 days (larvae of the brown hairy beetle are larger, longer than the beetle species) before transitioning to the pupa and adult stage. During the development cycle, larvae are active in the ground, age 1 and 2 in addition to eating cane roots, also eat organic matter, humus, decayed organic fertilizer or bagasse. Light traps are quite simple but effective in killing beetles applied in the cane material area of NASU. Photo: NASU. From the end of the age of 2, the larvae only feed on the roots and underground stems of sugarcane. The 3-year-old larvae have a long sexual development time and cause the most damage to sugarcane, making sugarcane unable to grow, withering, drying and dying, leading to a decrease in sugarcane and sugar yield. The more damage the harvest stage, the more obvious. When the 3-year-old larvae are full, they begin to build cocoons out of soil and pupate to stay in the cocoon. If the weather conditions are favorable, after about 20 days, the pupae will turn into an adult, break the cocoon and crawl to the ground. Unfavorable weather conditions, especially low soil moisture and low temperature, will prolong the pupal development time. This extended period, called the hibernation period, can last up to 4 months. Effective management of beetles According to the research as well as the process applied effectively at NASU, control beetle larvae by plowing the soil thoroughly before planting sugarcane, collecting larvae and spreading the granular insecticide Patox 4GR, with the amount of 40 kg/ha in rows when planting sugarcane. Beetles trapped in nets. Photo: NASU. However, the method of spraying granular pesticides into the soil, in addition to killing larvae, will destroy beneficial microorganisms and insects in the soil, affecting the soil environment. The adults of these sugarcane beetles tend to be strong with light, fly out to mate from March to May, after showers with an amount of over 20mm. This is the best time to kill adults, limit egg laying, and reduce later harm caused by larvae. Mr. Hoang Quoc Tiem, a long-time sugarcane grower in Dua village, Nghia Yen commune (Nghia Dan, Nghe An) said that in the spring crop of 2021, in addition to killing larvae when growing sugarcane, NASU has implemented additional measures to destroy them. maturity such as using lamp traps, casting nets, and making traps in the field. The light trap is designed to be able to install light bulbs from the grid, battery lights or solar power systems. Traps are made by taking advantage of plastic containers, above are lights, below are placed water, add diesel oil to prevent the adults from moving out of the trap. In the middle of the light trap, install 2 corrugated iron sheets of size 40 cm x 60 cm, perpendicular to each other. As adults, beetles are attracted to light, flying into traps will collide with corrugated iron and fall into the water. After the rainy nights of early summer, each light trap catches 250-300 brown beetle adults, 40-50 black beetle adults, and 20-30 large brown-haired clipping adults and lots of adults of other sugarcane borers. The “product” obtained after a night of light traps includes many different species of beetles and borers… Photo: NASU. In addition, on the field, a fishing net is installed, the size of the net is 1cm x 1cm, and the adults move hundreds of fish of all kinds after every night it rains. In the sugarcane field, from 50 – 100m, dig pit traps, measuring 30 cm deep x 60 cm long x 60 cm wide, below the manure and by-products, which are the preferred food of adults, mixed with drugs. Low-odor insecticide is Goldra so that when adults eat it, it will be destroyed. According to the research results of scientists, the female beetle species can lay an average of 229-328 eggs, the lowest hatching rate from eggs to larvae is 70%. With the method of killing adults from light traps and netting in the field, it will limit a lot of harm caused by larvae to sugarcane … Mr. Phan Van Toan, Director of Agricultural Extension of Nghe An Sugar Co., Ltd. said that with the above management method, the rate of damage of beetles on both silk and sugarcane fields is reduced. This is the money for the company to expand the model on the raw material area in the coming years to stabilize the material area and improve production efficiency for farmers.

To prevent cancer and protect the health of your family, please immediately save the way to remove pesticides in fruits and vegetables bought from the market.
Nowadays, the issue of food safety and hygiene is always a top concern for everyone, when buying anything from outside, everyone is worried about whether this food is safe or not.

The problem of pesticides and toxic chemicals in vegetables and fruits is also a concern of most families. To ensure food safety, prevent cancer, disease, pocket the following tips to remove pesticides in vegetables. Use vinegar Using vinegar to remove germs and pesticides from fruits and vegetables is one of the most effective ways. The method is quite simple, you just need to dilute 10% white vinegar with 90% water, then soak vegetables in it for about 10 minutes. During that time, stir the vegetables thoroughly in the water and vinegar mixture, then rinse once with boiled water to cool. Use baking soda Like vinegar, baking soda is also a great way to get rid of pesticides in vegetables. You just need to put about 1.5 liters of water in the vegetable wash basin, then add 4 teaspoons of baking soda to the bowl and stir the mixture. Then, soak vegetables and fruits in this solution for 15 minutes. Finally, using a towel to dry the fruit can be used. For vegetables, only soak the mixture for 5 minutes and then rinse with clean water. Soak in clean water This is the most common and easiest way used by many people. After washing vegetables and fruits, you can soak them in clean water with a little salt added for about 10 minutes, then rinse with clean water. By doing so you can help neutralize the toxins in the pesticides. Use turmeric powder Turmeric has strong antiseptic properties so they are very effective in getting rid of germs and pesticides on fruits and vegetables. All you need to do is take about 5 teaspoons of turmeric powder in a pot of boiling water, stir well and let the turmeric water cool down completely. Then, put fruits and vegetables in and soak for 20 minutes. Finally, just rinse again with clean water. Cook vegetables on high heat This causes the pesticide in the vegetables to break down. Some heat-resistant vegetables such as cauliflower, celery, etc., after washing, blanch with hot water for 2 minutes, which will reduce the amount of pesticides by 30%, then continue to cook at high temperature. This will reduce the amount of pesticides by 90%.

Many types of vegetables and fruits with chemical residues and pesticides are still being mixed and sold in the market, making consumers confused and worried. So how do you know which vegetables are clean and which ones have chemical residues?
How to identify fruits and vegetables that use chemicals?

According to the advice of nutritionists, it is possible to identify chemically contaminated vegetables based on some of the following characteristics: Color of vegetables: Clean vegetables are usually lighter in color than those using chemicals. The latter types are not clean due to the absorption of many chemicals, so they have a more eye-catching appearance. Cruciferous vegetables, water spinach, spinach, cabbage … when viewed from the outside, the outer sheath will be darker, stronger and less glossy. Based on branches, sheaths and leaves of vegetable plants: The number of branches, sheaths and leaves of clean vegetables is less, and the leaves are larger than those of unclean vegetables. The phenomenon of pests and diseases on vegetables: Vegetables with many traces of leafworms will be cleaner because they do not use pesticides before harvest. Chemically sprayed vegetables have large, smooth green leaves and absolutely no hole in the leaves caused by caterpillars. Taste when cooking: The taste of clean vegetables is stronger. As for the vegetables that are not clean, eating will be very pale, not feeling the taste. In some cases, there are residual pesticides in vegetables, which when processed will give a strong odor, difficult to smell. Vegetable storage time: Clean vegetables that can be stored at room temperature or refrigerated for about 4-5 days can still be used. As for vegetables that are not clean within the above time period, they will be withered, crushed, crushed (depending on the type of vegetable) and cannot be used anymore. When choosing to buy vegetables, it should be noted that you should not buy off-season vegetables because off-season vegetables often do not grow well, are susceptible to pests and growers may use pesticides, pesticides, and stimulants. for vegetables to ripen quickly and beautifully. Also, do not buy vegetables that have been peeled, sliced and soaked in water at the market because they are most likely to be spoiled or old. Do not choose vegetables that are too unusual in taste, color and do not trust the appearance of vegetables and fruits. Should choose to buy vegetables of clear origin. Clean vegetables are usually lighter in color than vegetables using chemicals. Identify some clean vegetables Water spinach: When using too much protein or foliar fertilizer, water spinach often has the following characteristics: the body is larger than usual, crispy, the leaves are dark green, the boiled water turns pale green when hot, and turns dark green when cool. Should choose to buy bunches with small tops, look a bit hard but eat crispy, delicious and safe. In addition, water spinach without chemicals will have plastic flowing out when the stem is cut. Bean sprouts: The sprouts are round, white, with few roots, when stir-fried, produce cloudy water, which is a type of sprouts that have been chemically used during the incubation process to stimulate the rapid growth of bean sprouts. When buying, should choose the type of price with many roots, white cotyledons, not eye-catching. This is a natural brew, safe to use. Zucchini: Safe squash usually has a burning distance not too far, dark green leaves, lots of hair. In contrast, soft, thin, pale green leafy vegetables with long internodes should not be purchased. Cucumber: Should choose green-white fruit, not too young or yellow stalk, hold firmly in hand, the outside of the peel has sharp points emerging. Melons that are sprayed with pesticides and growth drugs before harvest often have long, smooth, smooth fruits with light green skin, many fruits even have white streaks due to residual spray. It is best to salt and peel them before eating. Clean spinach has dark green leaves, thin but not hard. Do not choose vegetables with leaves that are too young, soft, thick and uneven. Some ways to handle chemically contaminated fruit Soak vegetables in diluted salt water: After washing vegetables, you should soak vegetables in diluted salt water for about 10-15 minutes, then rinse with clean water. Or you can soak vegetables in water to wash rice for about 10 minutes and then rinse with water. The purpose of this is to neutralize the toxins in the pesticide left on the vegetables. Heat vegetables at high temperature: Some heat-resistant vegetables such as cauliflower, beans, and celery, after being washed with hot water for 2 minutes, will reduce the residue of insecticide by 30%. Then stir-fry, cook at high temperature to remove 90% of pesticide residues. Using vinegar to soak vegetables: It is one of the most effective ways to remove bacteria and pesticides left on fruits and vegetables because it has strong antibacterial properties. Dilute white vinegar with water, soak vegetables for about 10 minutes, then rinse with boiled water to cool.

Instead of spending money and effort on using pesticides, many farmers have applied the weaver ant farming model to protect and care for citrus orchards. This beneficial natural enemy not only kills pests harmful to plants, but also improves fruit quality.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan (Hung Nghia hamlet, Hung Loc commune, Thong Nhat district) feeds weaver ants. Photo: Nhan An This environmentally friendly agricultural model is gradually being applied in Dong Nai. * Persevere with the new direction Mr. Dang Van Chuc (Hung Nghia hamlet, Hung Loc commune, Thong Nhat district) has more than 5 hectares of agricultural land with many different crops such as dragon fruit, cashew, banana… Around 2017, Mr. Chuc invested in planting 5 lemon pole, in the garden there are a few pomelo trees. Due to being busy with many jobs, Mr. Chuc did not have time to take care of and spray this citrus garden. During a visit to the garden, Mr. Chuc discovered that pomelo trees in the garden had many nesting weaver ants. Surprisingly, these plants were free from pests and diseases. So, he called some farmers in H.Cho Lach (Ben Tre province) to inquire. “The guys in Cho Lach say weaver ants are good for citrus. Then they showed me how to raise ants, multiply the swarm all over the garden. The way to raise is very simple, just hang chicken intestines, duck intestines on the tree and weaver ants come back at an extremely fast speed “- Mr. Mr. Dang Van Chuc (Hung Nghia hamlet, Hung Loc commune, Thong Nhat district) said: “I follow nature, do not use chemicals, but the garden always has fruit, I sell it every month. In total, I find the effect is not inferior, sometimes even better than using chemicals to take care of the tree. With the same price as last year, from the beginning of the year until Tet I sold for from 35,000 VND per kilogram of pomelo, no other garden in this area can sell for as high as my garden. The reason for the sale is because I don’t use chemicals, so people prefer grapefruit from my garden.” Like many other farmers, in the past, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan’s family (with living in Hung Nghia hamlet, Hung Loc commune) had to spend tens of millions of dong a year to buy pesticides, spray chemical fertilizers, and fertilize a large pomelo garden. 1 ha. That is not to mention the fear of affecting health, the environment and agricultural products that are not guaranteed to be food safe. In 2018, he started tinkering with how to do clean agriculture instead of using chemical drugs that are both toxic and expensive. Mr. Tuan said: “I have researched online, I know that beneficial organisms must be used to destroy harmful ones. In particular, the weaver ant is a very suitable species to destroy harmful pests and protect citrus trees. At that time, there was a nest of weaver ants in my field, but only a few “flare” had. Later, I caught more ants outside the house and brought them to the field to raise.” When he started raising weaver ants, Mr. Tuan received many words from his relatives and neighbors. Despite all the objections, he was determined to do it. However, his perseverance and efforts paid off. The ants gradually adapted to his care and became more and more prolific. Currently, the ants have covered and effectively protected the pomelo garden. Talking about the work of raising weaver ants, Mr. Tuan said: “Weaver ants are easy to raise, and do not take much time, effort and care costs. However, if you don’t know how to take care of it, the ants will leave or die. If it has been determined to raise ants to protect crops, it is not allowed to spray pesticides anymore. Because if you do, the ants will die or leave.” This is also the challenge of farmers who want to apply the weaver ant farming model to protect citrus orchards. According to Mr. Chuc, it takes 1 year for gardeners to have enough time to “build up” ants for the garden. Meanwhile, farmers will certainly be very impatient when their crops are attacked by pests and diseases, so they will use pesticides to make the ants leave. So far, many farmers have not dared to take the risk to apply this model. * Double effect Persevering with the new direction for the past 3 years, both Mr. Chuc and Mr. Tuan have achieved initial successes. Yellow ants nest on pomelo trees. This is a natural enemy of pests that damage citrus trees such as bugs, mealybugs, worms, etc. Weaver ants can kill harmful pests on citrus orchards such as: bugs, aphids, charm worms, mealybugs, stink ants. Therefore, lemon trees and grapefruit trees with weaver ants are almost 100% free of insects. Thus, farmers do not have to use pesticides, do not spend time spraying. This brings many benefits: good for health, balancing the ecosystem, protecting the environment, reducing investment costs. In particular, by growing naturally, without using chemicals, without being harmed by pests and diseases, citrus trees protected by weaver ants will produce large, succulent fruits. “People who make pomelos are afraid of the worm drawing charms, but the yellow ants can kill them all. Mealybugs are also a favorite of weaver ants. If we keep weaver ants in the garden, the quality of the fruit is number one,” said Mr. Chuc confidently. Mr. Dang Van Chuc (left) and Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan by Mr. Chuc’s fruit-laden lemon garden According to Mr. Chuc, raising weaver ants in the garden has only one drawback. That is when harvesting will be a bit extreme because if you are not careful, you will be bitten by ants immediately. Mr. Chuc said that without using pesticides, farmers still have many other ways to handle the plants to flower and bear fruit as they like. For example: adjust the dose of irrigation water, fertilizer … depending on the experience of each person. As for the 5 sao of lemon in Mr. Chuc’s house, thanks to the application of the weaver ant farming model to protect the plants, this orchard can be harvested all year round with an income of about 7-8 million VND/month, minus the cost of only about 10%. Sharing the experience of raising weaver ants, Mr. Tuan said that the rainy season is the season when the pests, bugs, aphids in the garden thrive, the ants have food available, so farmers do not need to give more food. In the hot and dry season, when the amount of food is exhausted, the gardener must provide more “bait” for ants, usually: chicken intestines, duck intestines, dried fish. Feed once a week or a fortnight. This is enough for the colony of weaver ants to reproduce and develop normally. In addition to raising weaver ants, Mr. Tuan also uses IMO yeast to make bio-fertilizers for plants. Accordingly, he took advantage of all kinds of household waste such as garbage, leftovers, etc. to make compost, then mixed with water to irrigate crops. This approach has helped him both reduce costs, and help the pomelo garden to be green, produce a lot of fruit and ensure quality.

Bananas are not uncommon in Japan, in the sense that they can be found in any supermarket as well as at any home. Bananas are also one of the most commonly eaten fruits in this country. However, it is true that bananas grown in Japan are super rare because 99.98% of bananas that everyone eats in Japan are imported. However, that statistic means that 0.02% of Japanese bananas are grown domestically, and we were quite shocked to learn that some of those 0.02% came from Hokkaido. Hokkaido, Japan. Yes, Hokkaido is a northernmost prefecture in Japan, which experiences winters under snow cover and has the lowest temperature and humidity of any place in Japan throughout the year. But they grow bananas in the Hokkaido town of Kushiro, we decide what they taste like. However, as many people suspect, these bananas are not cheap. They are called Bananas 946 and cost 1,080 yen (equivalent to 227,000 VND) per fruit, about 20 times the price of an imported banana at a Japanese grocery store. And what if you splashed your money on a box of three bananas like us? That will cost you 4,860 yen (almost 1.1 million). However, you will get a nice box, with individually wrapped bananas tucked away in the straw mulch underneath. The covers also have air vents so that the bananas can continue to ripen during their transport. We opened up a pack and the first thing that caught our attention was the size of the 946 banana that is exceptionally large. Imported supermarket banana (top) vs. Banana 946 (bottom). But we are not Victorian nobles who buy tropical fruit for decorative purposes. Food is to taste and it’s time to find out! Banana 946 instantly makes your taste buds feel its presence. Cultivated without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers, they taste sweet but not overpowering. The banana had moisture and richness, and the taste test left us completely satisfied. Not only does their area of origin make up the 946 banana’s uniqueness. They also have a remarkably thin shell, so thin that you can eat them. However, the peel of the banana has a rather bitter taste. However, this banana peel is said to be very nutritious, and distributor 946 Bananas recommends leaving the bananas unshelled if you make a smoothie, or even slicing and stir-frying the peel just like a traditional Japanese vegetable dish. Copy. The 946 banana can be purchased through an online store here.

A colony of giant grasshoppers is a terrible disaster. They begin with a black streak on the horizon, followed by darkening gradually. The small rustling noises gradually turned into the shrill noise of the millions of yellow insects that came. Since the end of 2019, grasshopper clouds have spread across the Horn of Africa, devastating crops and meadows, prompting people to trigger a massive campaign to destroy them. The ground and air spraying of insecticides in eight East African countries, coordinated by the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), prevented the worst scenario – the destruction of the grasshoppers. the food source of millions of people. In 2020, according to FAO calculations, the campaign will preserve the amount of grassland and food enough for 28 million people in the Horn of Africa and Yemen in a year. But this progress has come with unspecified consequences for the environment, and the difficult problem is to find a way to destroy this invasive insect without destroying plants, harming insects, and wild animals. wild and human. The consequences have not been determined To date, 2.3 million liters of chemical pesticides have been sprayed on 1.9 million hectares, at a cost of about $ 195 million (according to FAO statistics). This campaign will continue this year. Assessment of damage to the environment is not complete, but the effects of the insecticide have been recorded for centuries in other areas. Extensive pesticides not only kill grasshoppers, but also bees and other insects. They penetrate into water sources and can affect human health. Dino Martins, executive director of the Mpala Research Center in Kenya, said: “Of course there will be uncontrolled damage. All these chemicals are made to kill insects, and they do it with that. bulk”. Grasshoppers formed in 2018, after a hurricane brought heavy rains to the Arabian desert, allowing them to breed on wet sand. Strong winds in 2019 push the flock to Yemen, then across the Red Sea into Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya. Grasshoppers proliferate quickly and eat everything in the way they fly. Photo: National Geographic. The spraying was carried out even when the Covid-19 pandemic spread around the world. Wearing masks, hundreds of local volunteers and Kenyan conscripts wore aerosols and sprayed the grasshoppers with any pesticide in stock. They sprayed tens of thousands of liters of deltamethrin, as well as hundreds of liters of fipronil, chlorpyrifos, and other insecticides. In particular, many types are banned in Europe and some parts of America. In the reported case in the northern Samburu region, a ground control team sprayed 35 times the recommended amount of chemicals on an area, killing both bees and beetles. “Originally, this was an emergency situation. The idea was to try to control as quickly as possible to control the environment,” said Thecla Mutia, head of the environmental impact monitoring group of locust control efforts in Kenya. ensure food security “. Struggled to find an alternative Pesticides are poisons. Four types used in Kenya under FAO censorship have a high risk of harming bees, low to moderate to birds, medium to high with grasshoppers and soil insects, such as ants and termites. The European Union has banned the use of chlorpyrifos since early 2020, and some American states such as New York, California, and Hawaii also banned it. Fenitrothion is not approved for use in Europe, but is used in the US and Australia against grasshoppers. “We are not hiding the nature of the insecticide, but we cannot do anything while the grasshoppers spread. We want to reduce the number of desert locusts,” said Cyril Ferrand, FAO’s team leader in Nairobi. in a responsible way. Grasshoppers wreak havoc on crops with terrifying speed and scale. Photo: BBC. Biological solutions that are non-toxic, which can kill grasshoppers without harming other species, have been around for decades. However, chemical pesticides remain the top choice, accounting for up to 90% of the solution sprayed during the campaign in East Africa. The development of biological insecticides began in the late 1980s, after the grasshopper epidemic lasted for many years, stretching from North Africa to India. Christiaan Kooyman, a Dutch scientist who makes a bio-insecticide from the fungus Metarhizium acridum, which attacks grasshoppers, said: “When we see the number of millions of liters of pesticides sprayed, even the community. Donating them was also frightened. And they asked, ‘What else can I do?’ Metarhizium, marketed since 1998, has been proposed by FAO as “the most suitable control solution” for grasshoppers, but is rarely used. The drug works slowly, giving it a low “suppression” rate – that is, killing after days instead of hours. At the same time, its use was very expensive and difficult, more effective with young than adult swarms of grasshoppers – which was a great threat at the time. The biggest advantage of Metarhizium – just killing grasshoppers – also makes it a less profitable product. Companies make very little money making the drug, and go through the costly licensing process in one country and take a long time until it is allowed to be used. “Grasshoppers don’t usually show up, and businesses aren’t interested in producing something that isn’t used,” said Graham Matthews, a scientist on the Pesticide Review Foundation founding council. The grasshoppers come, you don’t want to wait for new production, you want a solution. As a result, governments have used wide-ranging, readily available chemical pesticides. Pesticides are the solution of choice to control grasshoppers. Photo: FAO. What worries the farmers, herders, scientists and conservationists of Kenya with these chemicals is that there is so much unknown – if any – about the harm they cause. A US government assessment warns “the risk of a significant negative impact on the environment and human health”, and the World Bank considers that the risk to the environment is “enormous”. “The use of large amounts of pesticides will of course harm biodiversity, but the magnitude of the effects has not been determined,” said Sunday Ekesi, an entomologist who joined his own anti-desert locust force. Nairobi, said. A major concern in Kenya is the impact of pesticides on pollinators. Farmers believe that the disappearance of bees is a factor in the low production of honey and mango. However, the lack of surveillance information makes it difficult for scientists to know what is actually going on. FAO’s 2003 guidance on safety measures shows that aerial spraying has no less impact on human health than ground spray, but often presents “more environmental concern” because There is a risk of entering sensitive areas in the ecosystem. In general, Kenya’s current grasshopper eradication campaign has improved compared to the first few weeks. If done correctly, the environmental impact will be very low. However, not many official reports have been published on this matter. Aircraft sprayed insecticides in the area invaded by locusts. Photo: FAO. Raphael Wahome, an animal scientist at Nairobi University, said FAO needs to release reports soon, so that researchers can evaluate more comprehensively. “Our main concern is that it’s all focused on locust control without the parallel monitoring system for undesirable effects,” he said. occurred where the “pesticide was used”.

  Soak in salt water

One of the most common methods is to use salt to wash fruits and vegetables. This is one of the most effective alternatives to washing fruit with vinegar. You can use iodized salt or granulated salt as well. Mix the salt in the right amount of water, stir to dissolve the salt completely. Then let the vegetables and fruits soak for about 10 minutes and then take out, rinse with water. Note: This method should not be used on thin-skinned fruits as this will damage the fruit. Illustration. Add more vinegar and lemon juice The experts point out that vinegar and lemon act as antiseptics and can also help remove wax or any pesticide left on the peel. Grapefruit seed extract is a potent anti-microbial as well as anti-fungal agent. Since grapefruit seed extract is a bit bitter and can be irritating, a whole large bottle of water is only needed using a small amount of about 10 drops. Specifically: Use 1/2 to 2 glasses of water; 2 tablespoons of white vinegar; 2 teaspoons of lemon juice; 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract (optional) Let’s mix together and pour into a spray bottle. Spray on fruits and vegetables (except mushrooms) and let stand for a few minutes. Use your hands to gently rub if necessary then rinse. How to wash vegetables to ensure safety for health 1. Wash the vegetables under running water The discharge force of the water flow and the strength of the hands when rubbing can help remove most of the dirt on the surface of the vegetable, and not damage the surface of the vegetable, so nutrients are not lost or lost. secondary pollution. 2. Peel Washing can remove surface pesticides, but not some vegetables that are absorbent. In general, the absorbent part is mainly distributed in the epidermis, so it is best to peel, for example, carrots, potatoes, melon, cucurbits, … It is best to peel before processing. 3. Dip in boiling water Dip vegetables in boiling water and then cook, the amount of nutrients is less lost, high safety, and at the same time increase the process of pesticide decomposition, effectively eliminate bacteria. Especially vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, easy to store insecticides and insects, boiling water is necessary.

Among dozens of types of vegetables and fruits on the market, which ones are often ‘bathed’ in chemicals that women need to consider before buying?
Everyone knows that at the market, vegetables are flooded, but the quality is difficult to guarantee because the spraying and impregnation of chemicals takes place like meals, eating in is like bringing illness into people. So among dozens of types of vegetables and fruits on the market, which ones are often “bathed” in chemicals that women know and consider?

  1. Cabbage Cabbage is one of the vegetables with nutritional value, so many women choose for daily meals. But this vegetable has a lot of worms, only needing 1-2 days for worms to destroy the whole garden. So before buying, you should take it to feel the smell of cabbage. If there is a strange smell, absolutely should not buy. The type wrapped in a mesh bag, round, dark green should also be avoided because this is Chinese cabbage. 2. Tomatoes In October and November, the tomato season is in full bloom, but this is a fruit that is susceptible to poisoning because in order for tomatoes to be evenly ripe and beautiful, growers often use drugs to ripen the fruit. To avoid “eating a bowl of porridge, running three intervals”, you just choose to buy green tomatoes to bring back, wait for them to ripen and then use them to heal. 3. Cucumber Vegetables that only need one fruit, you can make a variation of 7749 delicious dishes. But cucumbers have long been thought to be such a chemical spraying fruit that “ranks second, no one dares to be No. 1”. The chemicals are easily absorbed through the melon peel, so even if you take the peel clean before eating, it is not certain that you have completely removed the harmful substances. 4. Bitter melon Bitter melon is very susceptible to pests, so growers often use chemicals to limit pests. When buying, it is best to look for fruits that are small, long, with many tiny tendons on the body. Do not be foolish, but choose large bitter melon fruit, dark green, cool. Because of “deadly sweet nectar”, these are the fruits that are abused by chemicals the most. 5. Water spinach Are you surprised? The familiar vegetables in most family dishes are so susceptible to pests and diseases that, vegetable growers often have to use pesticides and growth drugs to control them. When you buy water spinach, do not choose the green, plump, fat, and long bundles. Because this is a type of insecticide contaminated with many insecticides, the growth drug is unable to eat, eating it is like killing yourself.

Vegetables should be soaked in running water several times before processing Asparagus. In asparagus also contains a special enzyme, which helps it remove the pesticides that humans spray on. This is the reason that almost asparagus contains very few harmful chemicals, even 100% clean. Peas. One of the strong points of peas is its thick outer shell. They not only protect the beans from the air, but also prevent pesticides from entering. You just need to peel off beans to be eaten immediately, not soaking too thoroughly like other foods. Papaya. Like peas, papaya’s thick skin will prevent chemicals and pesticides from entering and causing harm. Not to mention this fruit is also easy to grow, easy to bear fruit, so many places do not spray. Corn (corn). The thick crust protects the corn from environmental influences, including pesticides and harmful chemicals. Avocado. Avocados have a fairly thick shell, and the pesticides left on the shell are removed during processing before being consumed. Pineapple. In a test of 360 pineapples, up to 90% contained no residues of pesticides. This is partly due to the fact that pineapples have a rather thick shell that acts as a natural protective barrier. Tubers. Sweet potatoes, carrots, onions, beets, .. contain very low levels of pesticides compared to other foods because they grow deep in the ground, pesticides are difficult to penetrate into tubers because covered by soil. These tubers are less susceptible to pests and have a long storage time, reducing the amount of pesticides. Gourd, squash, melon, eggplant. With vines, the content of pesticides on the fruit is very little, so it is considered one of the safe foods for health. Gourd, squash, and melon have a thick shell, minimizing the penetration of the drug inside. Types of herbs, natural flowers. These are quite safe vegetables because insects are rarely eaten, so they do not have to use pesticides as much as other vegetables such as vegetables or cowpeas. In particular, herbs are fragrant vegetables, this is also a natural insect repellent. These vegetables can be grown naturally without the need for pesticides. Jute, spinach, amaranth. Because they are insectivorous vegetables that are rarely eaten, they themselves are less likely to use pesticides compared to many other vegetables. Kiwi. Most people usually remove the skin of kiwi when eaten, but in fact they are completely edible, in addition to providing an abundant amount of fiber for the body. Cantaloupe. Because cantaloupe usually has a rather thick peel, it forms a protective film against pesticides. The skin of the melon is like a net, along with the low acidity content creates a favorable environment for bacteria. Broccoli. Broccoli is less susceptible to pests and diseases because they can secrete a plant compound that helps fight harmful insects. Mushrooms. Fungi have almost no residues of pesticides. Many people use mushrooms instead of meat, which is both safe and also provides a large amount of nutrients. Sweet potatoes. This is an easy vegetable to grow. Just plug the stem in the moist soil and the plant can thrive. It also does not take much effort to take care of the sweet vegetables, and there are few pests, so growers do not need to spray pesticides.

The case of a family poisoning in Hoa Binh province when using essential oils to repel mosquitoes in early April 2021 raised concerns about the quality of mosquito repellents being sold widely in the market. schools, especially on online shops.

Mosquito killer is widely advertised and sold on social networks. Quality how the buyer is difficult to discern. Screenshots

The seasonal weather creates conditions for mosquitoes to breed, including mosquitoes that cause dengue fever. Therefore, many people are interested in mosquito killer products.

* Builds for… mosquito repellent

To prevent dengue fever, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam (living in Trung Dung Ward, Bien Hoa City) went to an e-commerce site to order a 100ml bottle of mosquito repellent Permethrin 50EC, 100ml capacity for 70,000 VND, recommended by the seller as originating from the UK, recommended by the Ministry of Health. When her children and grandchildren go to work and school, according to the instructions, she mixed the medicine bottle with 5 liters of water and sprayed it from the house to the garden. After nearly a day of spraying, from morning to afternoon when her family members returned home, everyone was still under construction because they could not stand the strong, stinking smell of pesticides that lurked in the house. Seeing that, her family had to turn on the fan, open the door wide to let the smell of medicine go away before they dared to enter the house.

Director of the Center for Disease Control of Bach Thai Binh province recommends that, when spraying mosquito repellent, there are some points to note: choose the time of spraying when no one is at home. When spraying should go backwards from the inside out to avoid contact with chemicals. Only return home 30-60 minutes after spraying; The elderly, pregnant women and children should return home after 2-4 hours. When spraying, cover cooking utensils, food, drinking water …

As noted by the reporter of Dong Nai Newspaper, at present, there are many probiotics sold on the market to kill mosquitoes and other insects. These products are very diverse, the type commonly used in many households today is the spray bottle and mosquito incense. In addition, there are products to kill mosquitoes with water or powder, mixed with water to spray on a wider area. However, the market for mosquito repellants is also confusing, people who do not pay attention or have a cheap ham, it is easy to buy toxic chemicals under the label of “mosquito repellant” that is safe for people.

Mr. Nam Nghia, a person who has been selling cleaning chemicals for many years at Bien Hoa market (Bien Hoa city), said that foreign mosquito repellants are often counterfeited. Counterfeit drugs are made in 2 forms: the correct form of the biological product to kill mosquitoes, but the buyers dilute it, 1 bottle into 2-3 bottles to make a profit, this type reduces the effectiveness of mosquito killing but less dangerous for people. The second is a fake medicine made from a pesticide, extracted in small bottles, labeled with a fake mosquito killer and sold at a cheaper price, which is very toxic.

According to Mr. Nam Nghia, the mosquito repellent brand Permethrin 50EC is selling very well because of its good effect. If the goods are from the UK, the smell is light, does not cause harm to people, the price is about 250 thousand VND / 100ml bottle. This type is being counterfeited the most and only sells for 1/3 of the correct price. To identify the genuine drug Permethrin 50EC is a white bottle cap with a dark brown shell, on the bottom of the bottle there is a logo of the product’s name embossed, and the fake is not.

* Use a safe mosquito repellant

“There is no mosquito repellent that is absolutely safe for human health, even if it is a real mosquito killer. Because all current mosquito repellents or repellents are chemicals, they also have certain harms to users, if used incorrectly, especially for the elderly, pregnant women and children. children. It is more dangerous if using fake mosquito repellent as bottled insecticide, the harm will be unpredictable ”- Dr. Bach Thai Binh, Director of Provincial Center for Disease Control confirmed.

According to Dr. Bach Thai Binh, in principle when spraying mosquito repellent, chemicals will cling to the contact surface of objects and on the user’s skin if there is no good isolation or protection when spraying. If using a concentrated drug on a narrow area, it is easy to risk allergies or skin irritation such as erythema, itching, burning skin or swelling of the eyes, sneezing, runny nose … If using the drug Using insecticides to kill mosquitoes will increase the likelihood of chemical poisoning. Mildness may cause dizziness, vomiting; severe breathing can lead to difficulty breathing, coma. When you encounter mild chemical contamination situations, you should take a shower immediately to remove any chemical particles on your skin. In severe cases, it is necessary to bring the patient to the nearest medical facility.

Currently, there are many types of mosquito repellent on the market and mosquito repellent chemical spraying service. People can use drugs or rent services, but should buy drugs at stores and agents with clear addresses, labels, origins, standards certification stamps. Should not be cheap but buy floating goods in the market. If you are looking for a mosquito spraying service, you should hire a company that is reputable and has specific addresses.

However, according to Dr. Bach Thai Binh, spraying chemicals to kill mosquitoes is only a temporary urgent solution. Basically, you should choose a solution to regularly clean the living area and the area around where you live such as: clearing the bushes where mosquitoes live; cap tightly the canals, drains, water jars, pots, dump water in discarded materials … to kill larvae; sleeping should be blind.
