Burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil produces carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. As concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere rise to record levels, governments have called for stronger emissions cuts and curbs on fossil fuel use to meet global climate goals. The exhaust pipe of a car is photographed on the street in Berlin, Germany. The remainder of the energy mix consists of traditional biomass, which is used largely for cooking or heating in homes in the developing world. However, in many regions, including parts of China, the European Union, India, and the United States, it is now cheaper to build new wind or solar photovoltaic plants than to operate new ones. existing coal plant. Renewable energy is also competing with new natural gas-fired power plants in terms of cost in many locations and is the cheapest source of new electricity generation in countries on all continents, the report said. big land. “We are waking up to the bitter reality that the climate policy promises of the past ten years have been almost empty words,” said Rana Adib, CEO of REN21. “The share of fossil fuels in final energy consumption has not shifted an inch,” she added. In many countries, the Covid-19 economic recovery packages aim to stimulate further investment in renewable energy. But renewable investments only account for about one-sixth of investment in fossil fuels, the report added.

On June 13, Tesla CEO tweeted that he will accept Bitcoin electric vehicle payments again. However, this only happens when Bitcoin miners can prove that about 50% of the energy they use is clean energy. According to Reuters, Bitcoin price increased 5% to 37,360.63 USD at 1:10 am on June 14 (Vietnam time) after Mr. Musk’s tweet. Musk also said that Tesla will sell about 10% of its Bitcoin holdings to show that Bitcoin can be easily liquidated. During the first quarter of the year, Tesla sold about $272 million in “virtual assets,” which reduced its operating loss by $101 million. Tesla CEO comments about cryptocurrencies often cause price fluctuations. As a result, he was criticized by CEO Magda Wierzycka of asset management company Sygnia as a “market manipulator” and that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) should investigate. In February, Tesla revealed in an SEC filing that it had purchased $1.5 billion in Bitcoin and would accept Bitcoin as payment for its products. However, then the electric car company paused due to concerns about the method of mining virtual currency, which requires huge electricity consumption, affecting climate change. “We are concerned about the rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels to mine and trade Bitcoin, especially coal, which is the worst emitter,” Musk tweeted in May. Du Lam (According to Reuters)

Not only raising cattle, Philip Hughes’ farm in the county of Denbighshire (Wales) also has a room for mining cryptocurrencies.

Hughes’ family has a tradition of breeding for generations. Now, he uses the farm to mine cryptocurrencies with a set of “buffalo plows” that use renewable energy from cow dung. Mining coins with renewable energy With six cylinder engines at 500 rpm, Hughes’ anaerobic digestion system can turn the methane that produces cow dung into electricity. BBC said. Under hypoxic conditions, microorganisms will eat hydrogen and carbon dioxide in cow dung and release methane gas, which can be burned to generate heat. The residue left after the anaerobic stage will be used as fertilizer. Philip Hughes’ farm (left) uses cow dung to produce renewable energy, feed livestock, and mine Ethereum. Photo: Crypto Hunter. According to Hughes, about two-thirds of the electricity generated from the anaerobic digester powers the nearby cattle ranch and caravan park. The rest of the energy is used for “buffalo plow” platforms to mine Ethereum. Hughes said Ethereum mining returns are good, but “depends on the date the question is asked,” referring to the cryptocurrency’s unpredictable price movements. Since May, the value of Ethereum has dropped from more than $4,000 to around $2,500, according to data from . CoinDesk on the evening of 10/6. Is mining with green energy possible? Not only digging Ethereum at the farm, Hughes also came up with the idea of renting a “buffalo plow”. Josh Riddett, a representative of Easy Crypto Hunter miner provider, said that the cost to pay is about $ 25,400 for each “buffalo plow” set consisting of many computer graphics cards with strong configuration. According to Riddett, Easy Crypto Hunter’s mining rigs have been installed in 42 different locations. They use energy forms such as solar, wind, hydroelectricity and stored methane from anaerobic digesters. The longevity of the “buffalo plow” platforms causes concern about e-waste. Photo: Getty Images. However, representatives of some small hydropower projects are concerned that cryptocurrency mining may have an adverse impact on the environment. Meanwhile, the hydroelectric power plant operator said that the unstable value of cryptocurrencies makes it difficult to recover capital for the project. Some people said that crooks broke in and stole the mining rig. Besides hydroelectric power, the initiative to use renewable energy (green energy) to mine cryptocurrencies is also controversial. According to the BBC , renewable energy to mine coins can be used for other purposes such as powering electric cars or heating. Financial economist Alex de Vries said that using green energy to mine coins is wasteful. “The benefits these systems offer are very limited. Bitcoin can only process up to 7 transactions per second, while payment services like Visa can process 65,000 transactions per second if needed.” Vries is also concerned that the longevity of the “buffalo plots” could make them quickly become e-waste. Using renewable energy to mine coins is considered wasteful. Photo: BTCManager. In the UK, the Association of Bioresources and Anaerobic Digestion of the country said that the number of energy plants mining cryptocurrencies is quite small. While the future of cryptocurrency is unclear, several people have expressed interest in Hughes’ mining project. This farmer is fully aware of the risks of investing in assets whose value fluctuates, sometimes with just a single tweet from Elon Musk. If the cryptocurrency market crashes, Hughes said he will use the computing power of the “buffalo” to serve other purposes, such as hiring filmmakers to render. The owner of the net shop removed the machine, digs coins and waits for the translation to end Due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, Mr. Nguyen Minh Quan (Thu Duc City) had to close the net shop, remove the graphics card to dig coins, earn extra income waiting for the reopening date.

Power planning 8 proposes 3 scenarios for power source development. The Institute of Energy (Ministry of Industry and Trade) has just released a report explaining the conclusions of Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh on the national electricity development plan for the period 2021-2030 with a vision to 2045 (Planning for electricity development). electricity 8). In which, receiving opinions on reviewing the scale of power source development, reasonable power source structure compared to electricity demand in each period, especially in the period to 2030; In order to prevent unreasonable backup of power sources (such as the plan to develop the total installed capacity of 167GW of power sources by 2030, while the load demand is forecast at 86.3GW), the Consultant said Power planning. 8 proposed 3 scenarios for developing power sources to meet 3 scenarios of low load demand, base load and high load. The results of capacity balance of 3 selected scenarios show that renewable energy sources (wind and solar) have the proportion of 24% in 2020; 24-27% in 2030 and 38-42% in 2045 depending on the load scenario. The crude reserve ratio if including wind and solar is always high at 60-80%, but wind and solar power sources are variable renewable energy sources, contributing very little to power system redundancy, especially At the time of maximum load in the evening, there is no sun. Specifically, in the dry season, in the evening, when the national wind power occurs, it only reaches the guaranteed capacity (about 10% of the installed capacity for onshore wind and 20% of the installed capacity for offshore wind). ), at this time, the national crude reserve ratio of power supply will only reach 21% in 2020, 11%-14% in 2030 and 5%-8% in 2045 depending on the load scenario. The consultant said that in order to confirm the redundant or insufficient spare capacity, it is necessary to calculate the expected number of hours that do not meet the load demand. The calculation results show that the reserve scale as above ensures the reliability of the system’s power supply. The proportion of electricity from renewable energy sources (including hydroelectricity) in total electricity production of the selected scenarios all meet the objectives of renewable energy development in Vietnam’s Renewable Energy Development Strategy, reaching 32% in 2030 and 40.3% in 2045. According to the Institute of Energy, although the simulation of energy storage sources has been included, the minimum-cost planning model still chooses to cut a part of renewable energy to meet the flexible needs of the system instead. because investing in more storage resources, because investing in these resources will not be economically viable. The reduction rate calculated from the model is about 1.5% of renewable energy output/year (excluding cuts due to local transmission). The use of a partial reduction in renewable energy to meet flexible demand is used by countries around the world, and accepting a partial reduction in renewable energy is also one of the solutions. to develop renewable energy sources. At the request of ministries, agencies and appraisal councils, Power Master Plan 8 has included additional power source options that occur in addition to the above 3 scenarios to provide information for competent authorities to consider in determining the power supply. operating. In particular, the most difficult option to build power sources and grids is when there are risks of stacking, including high load growth and slow progress of thermal power sources (especially domestic gas exploitation sources). Accordingly, the proposal proposes to select the power source development scenario corresponding to the baseline load demand forecast, which is the selected scenario to calculate the design of the transmission grid, calculate economic and financial criteria. of Power Planning 8. At the same time, the project proposes a power source scenario corresponding to the forecast of high load demand to be considered for use in the management and development of power sources, ensuring to meet demand in the event that the national economy and electricity demand are met. load demand increased dramatically. In case of risk of stacking (high load, slow progress of coal-fired power sources, domestic gas-fired power sources), it will be necessary to add wind power, solar power, flexible power sources, etc. operate ICE to meet the demand for electricity and build more one-way lines from the South Central region to the North to transmit the capacity of power plants.

A total of 95% of road traffic still depends on fossil fuels, so Germany needs transport based on renewable energy… We have to push and want to accelerate the transition to mobility. climate-friendly transition”. The German Energy Ministry will oversee 50 of these 62 projects, including plans for more than 2 gigawatts (GW) of electrolytic capacity to produce green hydrogen. This is 40% of the 5 GW target in Germany’s national hydrogen strategy by 2030. The Ministry of Transport will finance the remaining 12 projects in the transport sector. These activities will include the development and production of fuel cell systems and vehicles, including cars, trucks and buses… Hydrogen has gained a lot of momentum in recent years. It is appearing in almost every major oil company strategy and can be seen in many government plans for industrial decarbonisation. Governments, international organizations and oil and gas companies say that blue hydrogen (hydrogen plus carbon is collected and stored) and blue hydrogen (hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water using electricity from energy) solar or wind) could be the key to helping industries decarbonize waste in the energy transition.

Germany and Norway inaugurated the NordLink undersea cable line. Photo: DW With a total length of 623 km, NordLink is one of the longest undersea cables in the world, connecting the town of Tonstad in southern Norway to the mouth of the Elbe river in northern Germany. This cable route helps to exchange wind and solar energy produced in Germany for hydroelectric power produced in Norway, helping the two countries make up for the shortfall in electricity production due to fluctuations in the amount of wind and sun. The project is expected to help provide electricity for about 3.6 million households, which has been in operation since April, but officially opened on May 27. According to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the project is really a big step towards a sustainable and future-friendly energy supply for Germany. The project also helps to balance electricity production, which is an important part of the country’s growing efforts to expand renewable energy sources. Thorsten Lenck of the Agora Energy Transition research organization considers the NordLink project an important step in Germany’s energy transition and integration into the European power system. According to the plan, Germany will gradually phase out nuclear power by 2022 and coal power by 2038. Recently, Germany has also set many ambitious targets to reduce CO2 emissions after the Constitutional Court – a court Supreme Court in Germany, ruled that the current climate protection law was “not enough”, demanding an amendment to the law. With ambitious targets, the German government plans to cut emissions by 65% by 2030 compared with 1990 levels, further than the 55% reduction target set earlier. The reduction will then reach 88% by 2040, with the goal of making Germany carbon neutral by 2045, five years earlier than originally planned. For the first time ever, renewables in Germany will account for half of electricity production, compared with 25% less than 10 years ago, data from the Fraunhofer Research Institute shows. Interaction and exchange between different countries is also one of the pillars of the European Union’s climate strategy. To date, a number of cross-border projects have been operating between Norway and the Netherlands; Netherlands and Great Britain; Denmark and the Netherlands.

Research on recycling solar batteries contributes to boosting the weekly economy in Vietnam (Source: Internet). Solar power is an inevitable trend According to Decision No. 2068/QD-TTg issued by the Prime Minister on November 25, 2015 approving Vietnam’s renewable energy development strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2050, electricity produced from Solar power will reach about 35.4 billion kWh by 2030 and increase to 210 billion kWh by 2050. According to the Institute of Energy (Ministry of Industry and Trade), on average, a solar power source with a capacity of 1 MWp will generate nearly 70 tons of waste after about 20-25 years from the date the source starts generating electricity. Thus, according to forecasts, the amount of waste from these solar panels can reach millions of tons. Nguyen Van Hoi – Director of the Institute for Industry and Trade Policy and Strategy Research (Ministry of Industry and Trade) said that solar power is an inevitable trend of Vietnam’s energy industry, bringing many benefits to economic development. – society of the country and play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In Resolution No. 55-NQ/TW on orientation of Vietnam’s national energy development strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2045, it is clear that it is necessary to develop synchronously, rationally and diversify types of energy. quality, prioritizing the exploitation, exhaustive and efficient use of renewable energy, new energy and clean energy; Use energy economically, efficiently, and protect the environment. Mr. Hoi said that the promotion of renewable energy development should be placed in the overall context of solutions, especially in the treatment of waste from the development of this energy source. Solar battery recycling solution Talking about the experience of processing and recycling solar panels of countries around the world, Mr. Dao Tran Nhan – Economic and Trade Advisory Association (VICETA) said, the Korean Government has issued new law “Extended Manufacturer Liability Program to take effect from 2023”. Accordingly, the Korean Government requires domestic manufacturers and importers to pay a recycling fee, which is expected to be US$1.04/kg. Meanwhile, Switzerland takes advantage of materials and components that are still valid to use and destroys those that are no longer worth using, using solar panels as a source of raw materials for making electric vehicle batteries (such as automobiles). , motorcycle). Proposing solutions for processing and recycling solar panels in Vietnam, Mr. Dao Tran Nhan suggested: For the group of policy solutions, it is necessary to develop regulations on downtime and storage. or recycle solar panels and have clear binding regulations between the parties. For the group of technological solutions, it is necessary to develop specific standards and regulations for each type of battery and develop a regulation to monitor and control the quality of solar cells. In addition, it is necessary to have a mechanism to encourage recycling as well as to develop sanctions to punish violations according to regulations. Dr. Le Huy Khoi – Institute for Strategic and Policy Studies of Industry and Trade also offered some solutions. Firstly, it is necessary to strengthen the inspection, examination and supervision of the collection and treatment of expired batteries. Second, the environmental protection responsibilities of owners of production, business and service establishments must “collect, classify, store, treat and dispose of solid waste in accordance with the law”. Third, research, develop and soon form a construction environment management department to regulate and supervise the final management of solar panels. Fourth, develop mechanisms and introduce policies to encourage investment in building solar panel recycling plants in Vietnam. Fifth, there should be financial and credit mechanisms and policies to support businesses in a practical way. Sixth, strengthen propaganda on the awareness of using, collecting and recycling solar cells effectively. Experts agree that, for Vietnam, the volume of waste from solar panels is quite small compared to the leading countries, however, to ensure sustainable development, the State needs to study soon to have appropriate policy and mechanism related to the collection and treatment of waste from solar cells. From a circular economy perspective, this can become an opportunity for Vietnam to develop the solar cell recycling industry in the future.

The amount raised through long-term bonds is only a small portion of the total debt that Amazon has issued, estimated at about 18.5 billion USD. The company says it can use these funds to invest in clean transportation and carbon-free buildings. Amazon’s projects will include purchasing electric vehicles for fleets, as well as other electric delivery vehicles. In addition, Amazon said it will also use electric heating and cooling systems powered by renewable energy at the company’s new headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. In one pledge, Amazon will cut all carbon emissions by 2040 and power all renewable energy operations by 2030. Amazon’s decision to raise funds for social projects comes when the company faced criticism around the labor issue. In addition to being charged with unsafe procedures and affecting employees’ health, Amazon has also been criticized for illegally firing workers and forcing them not to unionize. However, Amazon has denied these allegations and said it has always supported employees’ equal rights. According to Reuters According to Reuters

The exploitation of lithium used in electric vehicle batteries exploded as the world electric car industry developed. However, the mining and renewable energy industries are not as green as imagined.

Squeezing on top of a decommissioned volcano in northern Nevada, workers are preparing to blast and dig holes to mine the first large-scale lithium mine in the United States in more than a decade. According to the New York Times, Lithium is an essential ingredient in the manufacture of electric car batteries and renewable energy. This lithium mine was built on federal rental land and promises to address current US dependence on international lithium supplies. However, this Lithium Americas project was strongly opposed by members of the Native American tribe, the owner of the farm and the environmental groups. The project plans to use billions of gallons of groundwater in the area. In addition, the lithium mine has the potential to pollute for up to 300 years and leave severe consequences and huge waste of waste. The conflict surrounding the Nevada mine represents a new tense problem: Electric cars and renewables may not be as green as they seem. “Blowing a mountain is not environmentally friendly, no matter how much economic expectations people put on it,” said Max Wilbert, who lives at the proposed mine. Demand soared In addition to Nevada, private businesses are proposing other lithium mining sites in California, Oregon, Tennessee, Arkansas and North Carolina. According to the Bloomberg In the first three months of 2021 alone, lithium miners in the US raised nearly $ 3.5 billion from Wall Street, seven times the amount raised in the previous 36 months. This shows that a lithium boom is exploding as the electric car industry is becoming a new trend. Lithium is used in electric car batteries because it is light, stores a lot of energy and can be recharged many times. Analysts estimate demand for lithium will increase tenfold as Tesla, Volkswagen, General Motors and other automakers launch a series of new electric cars. Blasting a mountain is not environmentally friendly, no matter how much economic expectations people place on it. Max Wilbert, a resident of the Lithium Americans mining area. Therefore, the US needs to quickly find sources of lithium when electric car manufacturers accelerate production. Although the United States has the largest lithium reserves in the world, the country has only one large-scale lithium mine, the Silver Peak mine in Nevada. Mining started in the 1960s and produces only 5,000 tons / year – less than 2% of the world’s annual supply. Most of the raw lithium used in the United States comes from Latin America or Australia, which is then processed and manufactured into batteries in China and other Asian countries. The Lithium Americas mine under construction in Nevada is estimated to have a lithium value worth $ 3.9 billion. The operator is expected to start mining operations next year. The largest shareholder of the mine is Chinese company Ganfeng Lithium. However, traditional mining is one of the most “dirty” businesses today. For electric car manufacturers and renewable energy companies, this situation has not improved much. “While its intentions are good, the need for clean energy can do harm,” said Aimee Boulanger, executive director at mining services for BMW and Ford Motor. bigger”. “Dirty” industry On a hillside, Edward Bartell and the ranchers often go out early in the morning to make sure that 500 cows roam the 50,000-acre (202 km2) desert with enough food. Faced with a lithium mining project in the area, his family has never faced such a great threat. Not far from Bartell’s farm, the largest lithium Americans project in the United States is on the horizon. Mining ore will have helipads, chemical treatment plants and waste yards with the depth of the mine up to 112 m. Traditional mines are potentially dangerous to the environment, animals and people living in the area. Photo: NYT. Producing raw materials such as lithium, cobalt and nickel often harm the soil, water resources, wildlife and people in the area. Like the competition for gold and oil in the past, governments are taking advantage of minerals to gain future economic and technological dominance. However, in the economic and technological race between great powers, environmental issues are often forgotten. What Barbell was most worried about was that the mine would consume all the water of the cattle. The mining company said the mine would consume 3,224 gallons of water per minute (equivalent to 12,204 liters / min). Thus, the groundwater level in the land where Mr. Bartell is breeding could decrease by about 3.5m. In addition, if the mine targets to produce 66,000 tons of lithium carbonate per year, this mine could cause groundwater to be contaminated with antimony metals and arsenic. Lithium is extracted by mixing clay dug from a mountain slope with 5,800 tons of sulfuric acid per day. The documents show that the entire process produces 354 million cubic meters of waste extracted from sulfuric acid treatment and can contain radioactive uranium. A December assessment by the Ministry of the Interior found that over its 41-year lifespan, the lithium mine would damage nearly 20 square kilometers of antelope and wildfowl habitat. In addition, the mine will destroy the nesting area of a breed of golden eagle and other wildlife. “It was disappointing that the lithium mine was introduced as an environmentally friendly project, when in fact it was just a giant industrial park,” said Mr. Bartell. He filed a lawsuit demanding to stop mining activities. “The war is not fair” So far, the Joe Biden administration has not moved to promote more eco-friendly strategies such as extracting lithium from sea salt water instead of opencast mining. People of ethnic minorities protest outside the land management office to protest against the Lithium Americans mining project. Photo: NYT. Mining companies, meanwhile, want to speed up domestic lithium production and push the government to include a $ 10 billion funding program in the infrastructure bill. “If China severs relations with us, the US will face many difficulties,” said Ben Steinberg, an official in the Obama administration, threatened. This war is inherently unfair. After all, the mining units are just capitalists. Maxine Redstar, the leader of Fort McDermitt Paiute and the Shoshone tribe. At the Fort McDermitt Indian Reserve, controversy over the project was even more acute and led to more conflicts. The Lithium Americas mine proposes to hire tribal members as workers with an average salary of $ 62,675 / year. This salary is double the per capita income in the region, but indigenous Indians will pay a huge price for the environment and nature. “After you pollute the water here, what will we drink in the next 300 years? You’re lying!” Said Deland Hinkey, a member of the indignant tribe. Mr. Tim Crowley, vice president of Lithium Americas, pledged that the company will operate responsibly with the local environment, planning to use steam from burning molten sulfur to generate electricity, for example. However, people here still do not trust and fear that mining activities will cause serious environmental consequences. “This war is inherently unfair. After all, the mining units are just big capitalist corporations,” said Maxine Redstar, leader of Fort McDermitt Paiute and the Shoshone tribe.

A solar power plant in Maryland, USA. (Photo: AFP / VNA) A unit of the company Samsung C&T is considering investing $ 673 million in the construction of solar power plants in Texas (USA), to start commercial production in December 2023. The solar facilities above will be located in Milam County, Texas, less than two hours ‘drive from Samsung Electronics’ chip factory in Austin. Austin is where Samsung is considering building a new $ 17 billion chip factory. With a capacity of about 700 MW, solar power plants will begin construction in June 2022. A Samsung C&T official said the company is doing the approval procedures with the authorities. The attractiveness of solar and wind power is increasing rapidly as nations around the world switch from fossil fuels to cleaner renewable sources to prevent global warming. The administration of US President Joe Biden aims to generate electricity from non-carbon sources such as nuclear and renewable energy by 2035. Recently, South Korean President Moon Jae-in also pledged to end all new funding for overseas coal projects and will soon come up with a more ambitious plan to cut carbon emissions. . In October, Samsung C&T Corp announced its decision to suspend any new projects or investments related to coal. While chip makers like Samsung Electronics, Intel and TSMC are also committed to increasing the use of renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions.

State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc affirmed that as a country heavily affected by climate change, especially in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam commits to take drastic action to respond comprehensively to climate change. including 9% reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions by domestic resources and up to 27% reduction with bilateral and multilateral international support. According to the President, Vietnam will continue to drastically reduce coal power, rapidly increase the share of renewable energy to 30% of the total primary energy supply by 2045, and domesticize international commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to organize and implement the program to plant 1 billion green trees by 2025. The President also shared views of many countries on the benefits of a transition to a green economy, zero emissions, especially on job creation, ensuring energy security, and improving. competitiveness and sustainability of the economy, but also emphasized that developing countries still face many challenges in their transition due to difficulties in capital and technology. The State President emphasized that the transition must be fair, inclusive and equal in terms of opportunities and benefits of the people, so that no one will be “left behind”; urges developed countries to continue to lead the way in reducing emissions and increasing financial, technology, and green energy support, and building efficient, high-quality infrastructure associated with creating more jobs. developing countries, including Vietnam. The State President believes that the implementation of the logistics objectives is appropriate to the conditions of each country and integrated into the national development strategies and plans. During the two days of the conference, senior leaders of 41 countries and the Secretary-General of the United Nations made a speech, emphasizing that climate change continues to be the biggest challenge for humanity and showing determination. accelerate efforts to respond to climate change. Some major economies such as the US, China, Japan … have made a strong commitment to reducing emissions by 2030, declaring zero emissions by 2050 or before 2060. Many countries call on the international community to promote green growth, invest more in renewable energy projects. The United States and a number of countries are committed to increasing their financial contributions to the climate. For their part, many developing countries reaffirm the historical responsibility of developed countries, the principle of common but different responsibility, calling on developed countries to fulfill the obligation to make financial contributions and support. to assist developing countries in building capacity to adapt and mitigate to climate change.

Facebook logo at headquarters in Menlo Park, California, USA. Photo: AFP / VNA According to a joint statement by Facebook and CleanMax, the 32 MW wind power plant will be located in the state of Karnataka in southern India, as part of a larger project on wind and solar power that the two companies are working with. to provide renewable energy to the Indian power grid. CleanMax will own and operate the above projects, while Facebook will buy electricity from the Indian grid. Facebook’s head of renewable energy, Urvi Parekh, said the tech company usually does not own the power plants, instead signing a “long term” power purchase agreement with the renewable energy company. According to her, this will help projects find the necessary capital. India is currently Facebook’s largest market in terms of users. Meanwhile, in Singapore, Facebook has also announced similar partnership arrangements with energy suppliers such as Sunseap Group, Terrenus Energy and Sembcorp Industries, which can generate 160 MW of solar power. Power from these plants will be supplied to Facebook’s first data center in Asia and located in Singapore, the facility expected to come online next year. Last year, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said data centers were causing technology companies like Facebook to consume about 1% of all global electricity. Tech companies like Amazon, Alphabet Inc and Microsoft have pledged to move towards zero carbon emissions and achieve zero net emissions, amid demand for digital data and services. ants will increase steadily. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on April 15 announced that the company’s global operations are now run entirely on renewable energy and have reached zero net emissions.

Domestically, Qatar aims to increase the share of renewables in electricity consumption to 20% from 2024, while developing new public transport systems, including electric taxi and bus projects. by compressed natural gas (CNG).
Session 2: Advantages and challenges

Solar power is Qatar’s strength

Huge solar power potential

Qatar and the GCC countries have the highest potential for harnessing solar energy, based on the annual amount of sunshine (including hours of sunshine and solar intensity). Not to mention, July, August and September every year is the time when the whole region has the highest amount of electricity consumption, due to the very high demand for air conditioning and also a strong solar irradiation time most of the year.

Therefore, the development of solar power technology is the most promising energy sector for Qatar. In early 2020, Qatar announced it would build a solar power plant with a peak capacity of 800 MW at Al Kharsaah, comprising 2 million two-sided photovoltaic modules (Bifacial technology) combined with tracking equipment. width over 1,000 hectares. Al-Kharsaah solar power plant will be built on 10km2 near the capital Doha, expected to be completed in 2022.

The Al-Kharsaah Solar Power Plant will reach maximum capacity when solar radiation peaks at noon – the time when the demand for electricity is highest during the day. With a two-sided photovoltaic module system incorporating a monitoring device to align the angle of sunlight absorption, the correlation between solar power production and electricity demand will be strengthened.

Total Energy (France) and Marubeni Trade and Investment (Japan) will sponsor the Al-Kharsaah Solar Power Plant Project, with a total investment of about 500 million USD (ie 0, USD 6 / Wp for Bifacial technology with tracker). This figure shows that the solar energy sector is on a constant and relentless trend of cost reduction. With the use of monitoring devices with a two-sided module, the load factor of a solar power plant can exceed 30% – an exceptionally high level in the solar sector, due to the home load factor. Average solar power in the world is only about 20%.

Fresh water is Qatar’s big problem in climate change

Electricity and water – Two main concerns

Solar PV can play a central role in meeting the growing demand for electricity and water in Qatar, as the two sectors are interrelated (large gas thermal power plants can produce water from desalination). However, the demand for water and electricity in summer is very high: Electricity peaks reach about 8 GW, double the capacity in winter; while the water demand is about 20% higher.

It should be noted, in recent years, electricity demand in Qatar has grown three times faster than the world average due to the country’s strong economic growth and infrastructure projects. giant. The high level of electricity consumption is also due to the government price subsidy that makes electricity prices almost “free” in Qatar, suitable for all purposes.

The demand for fresh water in Qatar is growing at a rate of 12% per year, mainly due to industrial development, population growth as well as increased irrigation in the agricultural sector and anti-desertification. Since then, the desalination process has been significantly accelerated, contributing to increased power consumption.

Qatar in the Global Energy Transition Race (Next and Out)

Increase the share of renewable energy

Qatar is implementing a series of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and assert its position as a leader in the development of new technologies.

Domestically, Qatar aims to increase the share of renewable energy in electricity consumption to 20% from 2024. At the same time, the transformation of energy in Qatar is also the realization of the development of public transport systems. new projects, including electric taxis and compressed natural gas (CNG) buses.

Qatar has established official bodies to deal with climate change (for example the National Committee on Climate Change – the national body responsible for climate policy formulation). Moreover, Qatar has participated in the GHG reduction program of the World Bank (WB) and the Global Association for Reducing Gas Emissions (GGFR). More specifically, Qatar Petroleum National Petroleum Company sets a “zero gas emission” goal by 2030. This goal will help develop new insights for other gas producing regions. Qatar Petroleum is promoting carbon capture and storage projects as it sees customers increasingly opting for low-carbon resources.

Qatar will need to make efforts to invest in low-carbon energy technology, by developing goals for energy efficiency and carbon concentration. Thereby, the challenge of Qatar is the reconciliation of new goals in the fight against climate change with the development of the domestic energy sector, along with new and “cleaner” sectors.

In recent years, electricity demand in Qatar has grown three times faster than the world average due to the country’s strong economic growth and huge infrastructure projects. The high electricity consumption is also due to the government price subsidy that makes electricity prices almost “free” in Qatar.

The answer is obvious: electric cars help to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and battery recycling is on the way to becoming a billion-dollar industry.

The number of car charging stations is increasing globally and also in Vietnam.

The energy provided for electric vehicles is increasingly clean

The REN21 Global Renewable Energy (GSR) Report of 2020 (Global Multilateral Renewable Energy Policy Network) shows that, over the past 5 years, the renewable energy sector has reached its speed. 3 times higher than electricity produced from nuclear and fossil fuels.

“When the grid becomes ‘greener’, using electric vehicles will be more perfect ”, Gordon Bauer – electric vehicle researcher at the International Council for Clean Transport in San Francisco (USA) said. According to expert Gordon Bauer, the current innovative grid model will help improve the environmental efficiency of electric vehicles around the world.

The evidence is a study by scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California (USA) that if all personal vehicles in the US are powered by electricity, each year, the country will lose 46%. greenhouse gas (0.5 gigatons CO2 equivalent) compared to conventional fossil fuel cars.

This is what environmental activists expect. Anne Laurent, president of the All-European Environmental Union, admits the members “have no doubts” about the positive impact this vehicle can have on the planet.

“We do not expect a perfect solution. Therefore, we are delighted that electric vehicles deliver positive environmental indicators“Ms. Laurent said in a report released at the end of 2020.

In Vietnam, green vehicles are also developing with the launch of private cars and VinFast electric buses. And look at “National energy development strategy to 2030, vision to 2045” – with the goal that the renewable energy in the total primary energy supply will reach 15 – 20% by 2030 and increase to 25-30% by 2045 we have the right to hope for a “green future, clean air” when clean cars are powered by clean electricity.

Electric vehicle batteries are too expensive to be … garbage

In addition to generating electricity, environmental activists have been concerned about the fate of electric vehicle battery blocks after they have run out of “trumps”. Elon Musk was the “victim” of this wave of protest. But in fact, electric car batteries can not be thrown away because … too expensive, even after the expiry date.

The reason is that the prices of cobalt, lithium, nickel and the metals used in lithium-ion batteries have skyrocketed as the electric car race intensifies between manufacturers across Asia to Europe and the US. Therefore, all electric car manufacturers are researching and announcing solutions to handle expired batteries with battery recycling technology.

“To meet electric vehicle battery demand in the next 10 years, the industry will need 1.5 million tons of lithium, 1.5 million tons of graphite, 1 million tons of nickel and 500,000 tons of manganese. Today, the world produces less than a third of that material ”Sam Jaffe, CEO of Cairn ERA, an energy consulting firm in the US, told CNBC.

Some studies show that recycling can recover between 95 and 98 percent of the nickel, cobalt, copper, aluminum, and more than 80 percent of the battery’s lithium. Ms. Celina Mikolajczak, Vice President of Battery Technology and Technology at Panasonic Energy North America, said that the battery recycling industry will be a billion-dollar land with the development of electric vehicles.

“There are so many benefits to recycling and it would be really stupid if we didn’t take advantage of the old battery cells’ ability to make the next generation.”Ms. Celina Mikolajczak confirmed.

This excellent solution not only eliminates the worry of running out of production materials, but also removes electric vehicle batteries from the burden of the environment.

There are more than 50 companies around the world engaged in the recycling of lithium-ion batteries of varying sizes, most of them concentrated in China (more than 20 companies), followed by Korea (6 companies), followed by the EU, Japan, Canada and the US. Even global tech giant Amazon hasn’t overlooked this potential by investing $ 2 billion in Redwood Materials, a battery recycling startup founded by former Tesla chief JB Straubel. Redwood Materials is also responsible for recycling electric vehicle batteries for Tesla.

In addition to recycling batteries for reuse for electric vehicles themselves, a series of projects to utilize old batteries have been implemented recently by car manufacturers. Toyota has a project to connect old electric vehicle batteries with solar panels to power 7-Eleven stores in Japan; Nissan is using old batteries to power the small robots; Renault is working with its partners to introduce static energy storage systems made of old electric vehicle batteries … Other car manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Lucid Motors or Proterra … are also incorporating reusable principles into their designs. the battery.

“We believe that the ‘second life’ battery will become an independent business and cannot be disposed of as trash.”, Weiland Bruch, BMW spokesman forecasts.

When the final concern was that electric vehicle batteries turned into environmental waste were completely eliminated – it’s easy to understand why green cars are supported by environmental activists around the world. And that will also be the green future that we need to move towards to escape the country’s “scandal” of the “two-wheeled gas factories” that international indicators set for Vietnam.

The project has a total budget of about 68 billion VND from commercial loans and reciprocal capital of EVNCPC. Artwork: Mai Phuong / BNEWS / TTXVN

To meet the need to release capacity for renewable energy sources and create socio-economic development momentum in the northern region of Kon Tum province, Central Power Corporation (EVNCPC) has just implemented the project. Improve transmission capacity of Dak Ha 110kV transmission line – Kon Tum 220kV transformer station.

The project has a total budget of about 68 billion VND from commercial loans and reciprocal capital of EVNCPC.

Accordingly, the 110 kV Dak Ha transmission line – the 20 kV Kon Tum transformer station is the lifeblood, supplying and transmitting electricity to the northern districts of Kon Tum province such as Dak Ha, Dak To, Ngoc Hoi, Dak Glei.

However, with the potential to develop renewable energy sources such as hydroelectricity, wind power, and solar power, Kon Tum has attracted many businesses to invest in renewable energy projects.

This leads to the line’s capacity to carry the load not enough to release capacity, regularly implementing the reduction, causing damage to investors and affecting the local economy.

The project to improve transmission capacity of Dak Ha 110 kV transmission line – 220 kV Kon Tum substation was commenced by Kon Tum Power Company in March 2020, with the scale of new construction of dual-circuit lines from transformer station The 220 kV Kon Tum voltage to the Dak Ha 110 kV transformer station, more than 14 km in length, was newly built, replacing the entire old line with insufficient capacity with galvanized steel poles, using ACSR-300/39 conductors and the modern dual-circuit 110 kV line connection.

Currently, the project has been completed and energized by Kon Tum Power Company and put into use in March 2021. The completion and putting into operation of the project is very important in promoting the socio-economic development of the locality, contributing to ensuring energy security, improving electricity supply reliability and reducing losses. power failure in the northern districts of Kon Tum province.

Mr. Hoang Danh Chuyen’s family (village 1, Ha Mon commune, Dak Ha district) currently uses 1 transformer station to cultivate more than 17 hectares of coffee, fruit trees and fish ponds.

“When the line has not been upgraded yet, the current often flickers, sometimes power outages, so it is difficult for the family to focus on production. Now, the upgraded power line has helped to stabilize the power source, so irrigation with electric pumps is more convenient and economical. ”, Mr. Hoang Danh Chuyen shared.

In June 2020, Ngoc Wang Electricity Investment Joint Stock Company invested in building a roof-top solar power project on an area of more than 8,000 m2, in Dak Ha district, with a total investment of 15 billion VND / MW. .

However, the capacity of the 110 kV Dak Ha transmission line is limited, so the company’s revenue is only 180 million dong / month.

Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ngoc Wang Electricity Investment Joint Stock Company shared, when the 110 kV Dak Ha line was invested and upgraded, the electricity system was transferred smoothly, no an overload occurs; from there, helping the company’s revenue to reach more than 300 million / month.

Through the project to improve the capacity of the 110 kV transmission line Dak Ha – the 220 kV Kon Tum transformer station, nearly 20 small and medium hydropower plants and more than 80 rooftop solar power projects using power lines have been guaranteed. Electricity supply protection and capacity transmission to the national power system.

Deputy Director of Kon Tum Electricity Company Nguyen Thanh Phuong said that the project has helped increase safety in operation and release capacity for hydropower and solar power plants in the region with a capacity of about 240. MW; at the same time, to be able to release the capacity of regional electricity development planning in the coming time, while ensuring electricity supply to meet the needs of socio-economic development, security and national defense in the region. Central – Central Highlands in general and Kon Tum province in particular./.
