Deutsche Bahn reactivates 20 disused routes and expands again into the area. The goal: Local transport should also become more attractive for people in rural areas.

Of Ulrich Crüwell, rbb

Despite all – partly justified – criticism of Deutsche Bahn AG: No other means of transport is under the same economic pressure as rail transport. “The rail is the only transport infrastructure that is shrinking. It is the only transport infrastructure that has to pay off. If we apply these standards to motorways, some roads in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania would have to be demolished immediately,” says Dirk Flege, the managing director of Allianz per rail.

According to a study by climate researchers, there will be more heavy rain and hot days in Germany.

The rail network is growing for the first time in ninety years

But the shrinking of the rail network has finally come to an end, says Flege and speaks of a turning point. The railway is no longer dismantling, but the network is growing – as the federal government has longed for.

In their coalition agreement, the Union and the SPD agreed to double the number of passengers by 2030. But despite political will, the rail network became smaller and smaller and the road network increasingly dense by 2020. Many smaller cities lost their rail connections. But now Deutsche Bahn is putting 20 disused routes with a total length of 245 kilometers back into operation. “This is clearly just the beginning,” announced Jens Bergmann, head of planning at the DB Netz division. For people who live in the countryside, this could be good news.

Historical undesirable developments

For Martin Henke from the Association of German Transport Companies, it is even a historic one, because it ends an undesirable development that began ninety years ago with the construction of the first motorway. In the fifties and seventies there were real shutdown programs for railway lines, according to Henke. The Germans clearly preferred the car and built one of the densest motorway networks in the world.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, it was a matter of optimizing, and politicians wanted the railway to be privatized as a stock exchange company. Rural local transport turned into a losing business. Deutsche Bahn speaks of a downward spiral: “If demand fell, little was done to make the route more attractive for passengers or freight traffic again.” According to Allianz pro Schiene, more than 15 percent of the rails were decoupled between 1990 and 2020 alone. But the mood in the country seems to have changed. The rail is experiencing broad political and social support, says association representative Henke. And this mood could also change the group.

 FAQ 08/23/2018

Deutsche Bahn Can the cycle timetable solve the problems?

Deutsche Bahn is to become more punctual by introducing a regular timetable.

“Every kilometer of track is active climate protection”

Among other things, the railway is putting closed connections in sparsely populated regions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein back into operation. Whether big money can be made with it seems at least questionable. But apparently that is no longer that important – what counts is political and social will.

Bergmann, board member of Deutsche Bahn, formulates the corporate objective as follows: “We want to attract more people to the railways, get more goods on the rails. Every kilometer of track is active climate protection.”

Tourism crisis Later restart the River cruises

Status: 19.06.2021 3:29 p.m.

River cruise ships are back in Bavaria – because of the infection protection with fewer guests on board. The long absence of the ships has left deep marks along the routes.

By Sebastian Grosser and Martin Gruber, BR

A melody sounds on deck of the river ship “NickoSpirit” before cruise director Ferdinand Selig starts his speech. “Welcome to Regensburg, dear passengers.” In front of Selig is a piece of paper with several names, which are in turn marked with different colors. “Please remember your grouping and don’t forget your mask when you leave the ship,” he says. At this point, several passengers have already gathered at the entrance of the ship to go ashore for a tour of the city. A maximum of 14 people are allowed in a group. This is part of infection protection.

Million revenues before Corona

The “NickoSpirit” is the first river cruise ship to be moored in Regensburg this year. Usually the season starts in spring. But Corona put the once booming tourism industry on the back burner in 2021. The Regensburger Stadtwerk, which manages the pier, is expecting around 100 landings this year. Similar to 2020, in the first Corona year, the city is expected to turn over only 100,000 euros with the ships. For comparison: in 2019, more than 1000 ships moored in Regensburg, with which the city was able to bring in a turnover of 1.3 million euros.

The badly shaken cruise industry longs for a fresh start.

Hard times for tour guides

Michaela Ederer is already waiting for the guests at the Donaulände, where the “NickoSpirit” moored. The tour guide has longingly awaited the first ship and its passengers. “The last few months have been really tough,” she says. “The majority of the tour guides work as freelancers and rely on the tour guides and the sales they generate with them.”

In the peak of the pandemic, around 7500 tour guides nationwide were unemployed, says Ederer, who is also on the board of the Federal Association of Tour Guides in Germany. Many of her colleagues should have tapped their retirement reserves. “We are therefore very happy,” she says, referring to the arrival of the first passengers.

Passengers: No problem with infection protection

While the guests with audio guides in their ears follow the tour operator’s blue tablet to explore the historic old town of Regensburg, cruise director Selig talks to the passengers who have stayed on the ship. Unless they are sitting in the restaurant or on the summer deck, they all wear mouth and nose protection. Many of the mostly older passengers do not mind the infection control measures. “The guests are used to it,” says Selig. For the provider of cruise travel, however, creating a suitable hygiene concept was a bit of a challenge: In order to maintain the distance, only 143 of the otherwise 170 passengers are currently allowed on board. There is even a certified test center on the “NickoSpirit” so that everyone on the ship can be tested every 48 hours.

Cruises despite Corona Dream ships in crisis mode

For years, cruise lines swam on a wave of success. That changed in the Corona crisis.

End of the cruise boom

While the provider Nicko had previously relied mainly on a German-speaking audience, other shipping companies, such as the largest industry association IG Rivercruise, have a harder time BR demand notifies. In particular, sales of shipping companies that specialize exclusively in guests from overseas such as the USA or Australia fell by 100 percent last year. But also those ships that were able to sail between July and October 2020 recorded losses of between 60 and 70 percent.

“The Queen would declare the year 2020 to be an ‘annus horribilis’. The IG Rivercruise joins this,” said the Industry association. The forecast for 2021 is no better. “The season is short,” said IG Rivercruise. Individual providers have therefore filed for bankruptcy, but had already got into financial difficulties before the pandemic.

Souvenir shops before the end

The lack of cruise business also brought Gabriele Winklmeier into existential difficulties. The 58-year-old has a souvenir shop in the old town of Passau. The ship tourists from the USA and France would actually be their main business. Due to the pandemic, hardly anything happened last year, according to Winklmeier. “This year, too, things have been bad so far: no buses, no ships, no customers. Now the first cruise ships are arriving, but they all dock outside.” She will probably give up her souvenir shop – after 17 years.

Winklmeier looks back with sadness: “Three years ago all hell was going on here. 300 guests as early as eight in the morning. You could still do business there. Today it can happen to me that I don’t have a turnover of 30 euros.” The guests of “NickoSpirit” will probably no longer buy souvenirs in Winklmeier’s shop. The cruise on the river ends in Passau. Several buses are waiting along the landing stage where the suitcases are already lined up. Cruise manager Selig, who has to say goodbye to his guests after nine days, draws a positive balance: “It was a relaxed trip, even if it seems unrelaxed. We were well prepared with the tests on board. Many guests were vaccinated or recovered. That is natural also a great relief for us. “

Is “train travel” the king? 5 routes tell you why it is worth

do you remember

Travel was once a “slow” thing

Unavoidably spend a long time on the road

There are endless scenery outside the car window

There is endless chatter in the carriage

Recently, “train travel” frantically swept the screen on Xiaohongshu

Many routes are popular

Just lazily lying on the train bed

Looking at the beautiful scenery outside the window, it keeps flying away

Is enough to make people feel extremely comfortable and satisfying

——Obviously, high-speed rail and airplanes can reach their destinations in a blink of an eye

Why “train travel” is enduring

Even more prosperous?

Pictured from Xiaohongshu blogger Planet Travel Xiaojiang

Probably because

Traveling is not about filling all the time with attractions

But to experience the state of being “on the road”

Slow train

It allows us to experience the journey bit by bit

Calmly enjoy the scenery on the way

It’s even worth making a special trip for the train

Lijiang-Dali

Private box to enjoy Erhai Lake exclusively

Dali Erhai Lake is sparkling

The magnificent rooms of Lijiang Mufu Palace

Xizhou wheat waves sway in the wind…

Take a trip to Dali Erhai Lake and Lijiang Ancient Town

Has long been a must-have item for travel to Yunnan

But travel by train

But it’s a new way to open

Pictured from Xiaohongshu blogger Fang Qikiki

See the following scene

You will understand why this train is all over the little red book:

In the sleeping box

Eating snacks and listening to the song

The bright sunshine on the plateau poured in through the windows

Slowly crossing the blue Erhai Lake…

The road is so uncomfortable

The scenery is beautiful

Ranked in the most enjoyable train journey in the country

Pictured from Xiaohongshu blogger photography Chill

This is a train route between Lijiang and Dali

The most enjoyable way

There is nothing more than the “mobile sea view double room”

Only 300 yuan

You can buy tickets for the “soft private room for one person”

You can lie down and enjoy the scenery of Erhai Lake in Dali (depending on the direction)

There is a 1.5-meter large bed and a small bed

Easily accommodate 3 adults

Can take the artificial passage

Get on the bus with 1 person and 2 people

Pictured from Xiaohongshu blogger Fang Qikiki

Private rooms can be locked

No one will come to round or disturb on the way

The facilities are quite complete and the details are considerate

Like exquisite bedside tables and table lamps

Knob-type adjustable box music volume

It’s almost as good as a five-star hotel

Pictured from Xiaohongshu blogger photographer Chill

What’s more surprising is

The bar on the train is very atmospheric

Comes with a KTV with light effects and complete audio

There is even a piano

Play a song or sing

Qinghai Chaka Salt Lake Train

Driving “in the sky”

Qinghai Chaka Salt Lake Known as “Mirror of the Sky”

Pure landscape

It’s a blockbuster when you shoot

When the light, water volume, and wind conditions are right

The surface of the lake is particularly smooth and reflective

Like a huge mirror

This is due to the high salt content in the lake

And deposited evenly at the bottom of the lake

Make the depth of the lake even

Crystalline salt grains are almost white

The reflection effect is stronger than ordinary lake water

Coupled with the high concentration of salt, the surface tension of the lake water is stronger

The breeze does not easily disturb the water surface

The lake surface is more “smooth”

Pictured from Xiaohongshu blogger Liao Dacongcong

Chaka Salt Lake is easy to mine

Has a history of more than 3,000 years

But until the 1950s

Still mainly rely on manual mining

Human digging, hand pushing, camel transportation, etc.

Until the 70s

Chaka Salt Factory designed a cutter suction salt mining ship by itself

Railroad tracks all over the salt lake now

Is an important tool used to transport salt

Busyly go deep into the lake from the outer edge every day

Not for transporting salt

Instead, it provides visitors with a novel and beautiful sightseeing experience:

The boundary between the world and the earth is inseparable

A symmetrical vast landscape

As the train moves slowly

It’s constantly changing in sight, and it’s extraordinarily graceful

Got off the train and walked along the passage

You can walk into the lake to play

Shoot pure scenery and your own reflection

The coal mines here have a history of more than 80 years

The small train was originally built for passenger and freight transportation in the mining industry

Now developed as a tourism project

The itinerary is from Yuejin Station to Bajiaogou

The rapeseed dam in the middle is a great viewing spot for the flower field

During the flowering season, how to shoot how beautiful

Mainly rely on train to get in and out

Inconvenient transportation to the outside world

Coming here is like traveling back to the last century

Here is the only real sightseeing coal mine Huangcun Well in the country

Can in-depth understanding of mining operations and environment

Pictured from Xiaohongshu blogger YIYI’s notes

Along the railway, the mountains and flowers are blooming

Mottled buildings, mines

There are traces of the struggle of coal miners

From time to time a few plumes of smoke rise

The train wheels collided with the sleeper rails

The siren resounded across the mountains

It’s like a paradise where time stays

Guangdong Yingde Train

Shuttle on the lotus pond

Karst landforms in southern my country

Largely distributed in Guangxi, Guizhou, Chongqing

Such as Guilin Landscape, Wulong Tiankeng, Xingyi Wanfeng Forest, etc.

They are all familiar karst landscapes

But Guangdong actually hides a very small karst peak forest

That is Yingxi Peak Forest in Yingde, Qingyuan, Guangdong

Except for the Peak Forest

You can also explore karst caves when you come to Yingde

The fairyland of the cave next to the Fenglin town of Yingde

There is an underground river passing through the hole

Feasible on board

Baojing Palace near Yingde City

There are magnificent caves

Strange shapes

At the moment when everything is “fast”

The “slowness” of the train seems counterintuitive

However, this gap

Maybe it is to help us get out of the big environment

Re-examine the opportunity to travel and invest in life

May Day holiday is coming soon

Why not take this opportunity

What about a train journey that is both classic and novel?

Don’t say anything, go grab the ticket!

topic
