Social criticism is one of the important functions, the ‘power’, the noble mission of the press, especially in the current context of integration and development and information explosion. Using the pen as a ‘weapon’, through quality journalistic works, Thanh Hoa’s journalist team always strives to voice a profound, influential and pervasive criticism, impact, leave a deep impression on the public, towards building a better society.

Journalist Pham Hong Hanh, Head of the Party Building Department – Internal Affairs, Thanh Hoa Newspaper: Promoting the role of critic to contribute to improving the position of the press in society In order to well perform the social criticism function of the press, Thanh Hoa Newspaper has built specialized pages, thematic article circuits and categories suitable for each publication: Thanh Hoa daily, Thanh Hoa monthly, Electronic Thanh Hoa and specializing in Culture and Life website. Thereby creating forums, information and reflection channels to timely convey 2-way information: undertakings and policies from the Party Committee, government and political system to people, businesses, and organizations. organizations, individuals and vice versa. The bottlenecks in the implementation of guidelines, policies, and problems of organizations, businesses and people are reflected and commented on through press works, which have been reported by the provincial leaders, leaders of the province. localities listen, grasp and direct the removal in a timely manner. Existing problems and inadequacies in society are also objects of criticism by the press, contributing to building a better society, with the same direction towards the values of truth – goodness – beauty. Following the direction of the Editorial Board, the reporters of the Party Building – Internal Affairs Department actively participated in propaganda to fight against false information, prevent corruption and negativity, etc. Press works written on this topic have contributed to clarifying the causes, including “gaps”, “holes” in terms of policies and laws, in management, leading to the arising of illegal actions. violations of the law, thereby proposing measures for the competent authorities to study and overcome in order to prevent and fight more effectively the evils of corruption and waste. However, it must be admitted that the quality of social criticism information in the local press is not high. This has several reasons, such as: inadequate information provision to journalists leads to a lack of an objective and comprehensive view; The capacity of some journalists is limited, so it is only a simple reflection, not a deep critique… In order to promote the role of social criticism of the press, it is necessary to continue to raise awareness of the heads of agencies, units and organizations in providing information to the press, as well as to properly understand the role of the media. , the social criticism function of the press. On the other hand, another important factor is that each journalist must always cultivate and improve his or her understanding, knowledge, and information about his or her field of writing in order to give a correct, successful and timely critique with the breath of life living. When making journalistic works, especially before issues that need criticism, journalists must have information verification, alertness, and bravery to have an honest, objective, multi-dimensional, constructive perspective. built with a sense of citizenship, social responsibility is upheld. Journalist Nguyen Huy Long (Head of News and Politics Department, Thanh Hoa Radio and Television Station): The critical voice of journalists is the voice of bravery, competence, morality and passion. Social criticism is both a responsibility and a goal of journalists. However, it is never easy to commit to and achieve success in this field. Over the years, the Newsroom – Politics, Thanh Hoa Radio and Television Station (TTV) has produced many quality articles, timely, accurately and vividly reflecting new, hot issues, existential problems and problems at the grassroots level, which are highly appreciated by society, leaving a mark in the hearts of the audience. Many works won high prizes at the National Press Prize, the National Television Festival. In order to have highly critical journalistic works, bringing the journalist’s critical voice to the public, the role of agency leaders and department leaders is especially important, requiring a “mind” and “range”. They are the ones who cover, evaluate and analyze the problem, from which they have timely orientations and directions, catch the right pulse and succeed in effectively deploying the cards. However, without a team of reporters who have solid political skills, are good at expertise, professional, exemplary in professional ethics, dare to commit to the profession, those orientations and directions will not be possible. transformed into a quality journalistic work. In the coming time, closely following the movement and development of the province, from the orientation, assignment and direction of the Board of Directors, the News and Politics Department focuses on propagating, reflecting, and bringing the resolution to life. site clearance, investment attraction… and new, hot, existing and pressing issues at the grassroots level, in people’s lives… Since then, together with the press agencies contribute to the cause of building and developing Thanh Hoa homeland. Journalist Nguyen Quang Duy (Journalism and Public Affairs): Accepting to walk on a rope to learn how to keep balance Criticism is the clear voice of journalists for the common good, for development in the spirit of objectivity, honesty, and construction, in order to contribute to building a better society. Thanh Hoa province is considered as one of the localities with exciting press activities, including the efforts of press agencies, representative offices and resident reporters in the area. It must be said: Thanh Hoa is one of the provinces where the leaders of all periods are very interested in press work, creating an environment and conditions for the press to operate. But most importantly, with its rich history and culture, as well as its current dynamism and development, Thanh Hoa is a rich and abundant “raw material area” for the press to exploit. In the context of information competition, in addition to posting new and hot information, each reporter needs to be conscious of cultivating knowledge, especially legal knowledge, training skills, and perfecting himself in order to bring to the public. readers of journalistic works with high criticism, great impact and pervasiveness on society. Someone compares: Making newspapers is like walking on a rope. I really like this metaphor. Because walking on the rope is easy to fall, it reminds me to always be careful. Accepting walking on the rope also means learning how to balance before the impact, the resistance, the pressure, the attraction… to come to the same truth.

In a relatively primitive society, animals as well as humans will have to compete for food, territory, mating objects, and even wars between herds and tribes. So with lab rats living in a carefree place, what will ‘rat paradise’ be like?
Human society is increasingly developing, competing resources are not simply water, shelter or food but also minerals, oil, … and the scale of war also follows the historical flow. which is getting bigger and more dangerous. Furthermore, competing resources are intangible aspects, such as education, medical care, and work. The unequal distribution of these resources is often the focus of society in peacetime.

Everyone longs for a “paradise” free from disease, war, and oppression, although this paradise may not exist, but with the development of science, technology and society, we are getting closer. to heaven in the eyes of the ancients. We will also be curious about the future of human society. There are countless works trying to construct an impossibly beautiful perspective for exploring such issues, most of which of course have pessimistic results. In 1798, the British demographer and economist – Malthus showed in his thesis “Principle of Population” that the population increased exponentially but food production increased linearly. If things continued like this, it would reach a point where the population could no longer grow. The hidden content of this theory is that population growth does not necessarily bring prosperity, but can cause socioeconomic stagnation, hence the so-called “Malthusian trap”. After the end of World War II, the world gradually returned to prosperity, the United States ushered in a period of population explosion with a series of babies after the war, and with it, pessimistic views began to emerge. . Some people think that “overpopulation” can lead to a crisis, which in the short term will deplete resources for survival. This mentality of the majority of the population was immediately drawn to Malthus’ ideals. However, the success of the Green Revolution made Malthus’s model no longer valid, as food production spiked. However, the fear surrounding population explosion and its consequences still lingers here and there. Accordingly, a series of experiments demonstrating the effects of population explosion emerged. But a series of animal experiments seem to have yielded surprising results. Human estimates of resources for survival may still be too optimistic, but the real crisis coming from the population itself will seem obvious. The most prominent of which is the experiment of John B. Calhoun, an American expert specializing in the study of ethology and human behavior. John B. Calhoun and the Norwegian Rats. Calhoun was particularly interested in studying birds during his early years, and one of his studies was published in the journals of the Tennessee Bird Society at the age of 15. After that, Calhoun studied from bachelor’s degree to doctorate, and his research direction also gradually turned to animal behavior. Since his doctoral thesis was to study the 24-hour rhythm of the Norwegian rat, Calhoun’s work after graduation was also closely related to this rat. In 1947, Calhoun, then working at Johns Hopkins University, asked a neighbor to buy a piece of land less than 1,000 square meters to use as a laboratory. Then he decided to build an “artificial rat paradise” so that his rodents could live carefree. In the end, Calhoun named the place “Rat City”. With this amount of land, the area of the mouse city is not small, it is estimated that it can accommodate 5,000 rats, Calhoun also provides adequate food and water for his mouse subjects, while minimizing the maximum. the impact of disease and predators. Rats are only allowed to operate within the “city”. However, the development of the mouse city was not as smooth as imagined, even a bit bizarre. Calhoun initially included five pregnant female mice, but the reproductive rates of mice in this range were not as high as he had imagined. The number of rats in the study area never exceeded 200, and it stabilized at about 150, much smaller than the number of rats this “artificial paradise” could accommodate. Live rats cluster together in groups, and feed only at specific spots. This may have been the first experiment that brought Calhoun’s attention to population density. Five years after the failure of the rat city project, Calhoun joined the US National Department of Mental Health (NIMH) and was in a better position to design experiments on mice. At that time, Calhoun had a small team working with him, they improved the experimental environment on the mice as well as specially designed the breeding area so that the “artificial paradise” could work better. . The farming area is now only about 4.5 m long, 3 m wide, divided into 4 areas separated by electric fences, each area is equipped with unlimited food and water sources, there is also a multi-storey “apartment” that rats can enter in a spiral. The 4 areas separated by the grid are actually not completely isolated from each other, they are connected in pairs by 3 small bridges. Specifically, these four regions can be considered as four quadrants in the Cartesian coordinate system, where only a direct bridge exists that causes the path to move between the beginning – area 1 and the end – area 4 creating into a U shape. Calhoun designed a special feeding system, where solid food is kept behind nets and the collection process is not easy. In the first litter, but the residents here are reasonably arranged with a total of 32 mice, the number of males and females is equal and they are all adult rats that have reached reproductive age. According to the plan, the mice in the habitat would breed quickly, and the number would exceed the 40 limit for a short time, but Calhoun wouldn’t stop the experiment immediately. He would let the rats spawn to 80 and watch them. At first, the female rats were evenly distributed in the four regions, but when the fights between the males ended, the stronger males took over more females. Due to the design of four areas and three connecting bridges, a large number of low-status male rats will be concentrated in areas two and three, while the first and fourth areas become “swarms” of mice Males have higher status. At the bridge, the rats built their own barriers that prevented individuals from walking freely. Weak mice went to cages 2 and 3 to feed and could not return, only a small number of male rats remained in cages 1 and 4. At this point, the strange thing happened, the low-status male rat living in areas 1 and 4 – despite living among the females – had no desire to mate with the opposite sex. Instead they approached higher-status male rats, but the high-status males didn’t deny it either. The number of mice in the barn for 2-3 days is dense due to the continuous appearance of new litters of mice that “go and do not return”. At the same time, the rats’ eating behavior changed as they became accustomed to Calhoun’s feeding device. They refuse to eat alone, and only engage in net scavenging activities when and only in the presence of their own. The pressure from the population, from feeding (despite the abundance of food) creates a pattern that Calhoun calls a “behavioural sink”, roughly translated as “behavior alienation”; Rats begin to develop harmful behaviors. Under the influence of behavioral alienation, female rats have increased social interaction and decreased ability to care for offspring – and because young rats rely heavily on their mothers, herd numbers are at risk of decline. Whenever female mice move their nests, they often leave behind a large number of young mice. And yet, at the time of estrus, because female rats live in closed cages, they cannot escape from the males, and the brutal mating behavior in the cage affects the young even more. At one point, the mortality rate in the rat cage reached 96%. In dominant males, behavioral corruption causes them to become hysterical, frequently attacking their cagemates and even their young. In the vulnerable group of mice, Calhoun found traits that could separate mice into three distinct groups: The first type is called “pansexual”, they do not participate in competitions for social status, but will try to mate with any rat possible regardless of gender. or age. Not many individuals refuse this behavior. The latter, which Calhoun calls a “somnambulist”, is slow-moving, barely interacts with other rats, does not participate in social activities, and very few other individuals interact with them. ., but they are extremely fond of taking care of their appearance and are never violent. The third category, the group that most surprised Calhoun was named the “probes”. These are hyperactive individuals, constantly looking for opportunities to mate with rats of both sexes. Even if they were attacked by higher-status male rats, they would still frantically pursue females in heat. Once they reached the slums and found the young left behind, the fugitives found another source of nourishment. Continue: The end of the gruesome experiment, and the premise of the next one.

Before Covid-19 appeared, the Ganges River was once “flooded with corpses”. In 1918, when an influenza pandemic swept through India and killed an estimated 18 million people, the river’s waters filled with the smell of rotting corpses. This creepy scene is making a comeback because of a pandemic. The official death toll in India is reported to be more than 250,000, but experts say the real number is five times higher, according to Guardians. These bodies began to wash up on the banks of the sacred river, becoming a haunting symbol for the uncounted Covid-19 deaths. According to the Economist , these images also reveal the picture of Indian society with poor people struggling to cope with the pandemic and make a living. Relatives and relatives carry the body of a person who died of Covid-19 to be buried on the banks of the Ganges River. Photo: Shutterstock. No one sells firewood to cremate relatives On May 19, India continued to set a new record for the number of deaths in a day due to Covid-19: 4,529 people. This is the highest number of daily Covid-19 deaths of any country ever, surpassing the previous record in the US with 4,475 deaths in a day. To date, India has recorded more than 25 million cases and 275,000 deaths from Covid-19. However, there are no official statistics on the number of bodies discovered in the past two weeks in the open stretch of the Ganges that flows through the poor rural states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, or buried in shallow sandy graves along the riverbanks. in Uttar Pradesh. Through statistics, locals and journalists here put the number of more than 2,000 bodies. In the village of Gahmar in Uttar Pradesh, 15-year-old Raju Chaudhry, who works on a fishing boat, said he had recently seen “about 50 bodies being washed away every day, for many days”. There is no way to know if these people have Covid-19 or not, although Indian authorities have acknowledged some of the bodies as those who died from the pandemic. According to official figures released by the government, the death and infection rate of Covid-19 in Gahmar village is low. But Bhupendra Upadhyay, a priest here, said a lot of people have died in the past few weeks. Earthen vases hang from a banyan tree by the Ganges River in the village of Gahmar, each representing a person who has just died. Photo: Guardian. “I saw 30 to 35 bodies being brought into the river recently and drowned here. Many people drop dead bodies in the river because they have difficulty arranging cremation, because there are so many dead people,” he said. Upadhyay pointed to the trunk of the banyan tree where he was sitting. On the trunk, dozens of earthen pots are tied up. “Each of those vases represents a deceased person. Let’s see how many, just from the last 10 days,” he said. In the case of Shambhu Nath, his family had no difficulty in cremation, as villagers helped and attended the funeral. But after the second brother in the family died of Covid-19, they found themselves abandoned by their neighbors. “When we tried to buy firewood for our cremation, we were chased away. No one in the village could help us with the cremation because they suspected we had Covid-19. We couldn’t get the wood and didn’t know what else to do. , so we had to drown his body in the river. We did it at 11am the next morning, and only a close family came to offer condolences,” he said. What do corpses in the Ganges reveal? Sheet Economist An assessment of India’s covid-19 crisis, with images of corpses floating in the Ganges, reveals two things. One is the scale of the tragedy sweeping across the vast territory of India. In remote rural areas, far from city clinics, people are not being tested for Covid-19. Therefore, no cases or deaths were recorded. The officially published death toll is now a fraction of the true number. Economist identify. The second thing that the bodies in the Ganges reveal is that this wave of Covid-19 is ravaging the lives of the poor, who are already struggling to make ends meet. The poor are losing their jobs, starving to eat and falling victim to scams. Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Response Force soldiers carry empty coffins to transport the bodies of people who died of Covid-19 on May 19. So they can’t afford to pay for cremation or funeral. ceremony,” Utpal Pathak, a local journalist, told Economist. After the first wave of Covid-19 swept through India in 2020, many local newspapers and research institutes tried to calculate the economic impact of the pandemic on the poor. Pew Research Institute estimates that as of January 2020, only 4.3% of Indians earn less than $2. A year later, that number had increased to 9.7%, or 134 million people. In-depth research by Azim Premji University in Bangalore shows that after the 2020 nationwide lockdown, about 230 million Indians slipped below the poverty line, which is set based on the minimum wage (about $45 a month). ). The university researchers also found that during the lockdown, 90% of the poor consumed less food. Six months later, their diets still haven’t returned to normal. In the past year, the income of Indian workers, including the lucky 10% who have a salaried job, has fallen by a third, according to the report. Economist. Shocked by the terrible impact of the pandemic and the blockade order in 2020, this year, the central government of India let the state and local governments to impose the blockade order on their own based on the actual situation. “Although the economy has not yet come to a complete standstill, the scale of this outbreak still leaves many families devastated.” Economist write. A worker helps cremate a body on the banks of the Ganges River. Photo: Getty. For many people, the biggest shock is the loss of family breadwinners. The Indian railway company has 1.2 million employees, but Covid-19 killed 1,952 employees here. In April, the state of Uttar Pradesh dispatched 1.2 million civil servants to work on local elections and counting votes. Report of Economist said this election was the cause of the large-scale outbreak. It is estimated that about 2,000 of the aforementioned civil servants died afterward, including 800 teachers. Each of those deaths cost their families weeks of grief and expensive treatment. Not to mention each person who died could have infected and made 20 others seriously ill. “In a normal year, one in 20 families is pushed into poverty due to high medical costs. What has happened in the last two months is understandable. Millions of wonderful Indian families Hope was forced to sell gold, pawn or borrow money. Economist write. In times of poverty, people are vulnerable to a variety of scams, such as healthcare workers demanding bribes to secure hospital admissions, purchasing counterfeit drugs, or even in some states, painted scams. on fire extinguishers to sell as oxygen tanks. Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, who has been promoting an herbal “cure” for Covid-19, last week advised Indians to eat more dark chocolate with “more than 70% cocoa” to beat the stress of the pandemic. . Bringing the ashes of unclaimed Covid-19 victims to the Ganges River Indian volunteers collect ashes from crematoriums to organize funerals for Covid-19 victims in Haridwar city.

Accidentally finding remains from hundreds of years ago at the bottom of Dong Xanh lake (Guangdong, China), experts discovered more dark patches in feudal times.

Archaeologists have accidentally found female skeletons from hundreds of years ago at the bottom of the lake In ancient China, the status of women was very low. The ancient doctrine of “three submissions” comes from the book “Rite – mourning” by Boc Thuong. In the book, it is written that “at home, follow the father, when married, follow the husband, the husband follows the son” (At home, follow the father, marry, follow the husband, the husband dies with the children). Simply from this point of view, it can be seen that a woman is completely dependent, has no autonomy, can only obey her father, husband and son. The higher the status of men, the lower the status of women in the old society. They are only considered as a tool to give birth, not allowed to read books, only “take, exam, exam, draw” is enough because these abilities can be used to please men and become men. famous women. Ancient society had a mindset that limited women’s abilities. They even firmly believe that “A woman without any talent is a virtue”. This idea is so deeply ingrained that many women at the present time still agree with it. In “The Commandments of Women”, Ban Co once mentioned this point of view: “Men consider strength to be a precious thing, women take weakness to make beauty”. To a certain extent, this saying reflects Ban Co’s prejudice against women. She believes that women only go up to do things within the rules, but men must be stronger than women. In such a society, women are naturally subject to a lot of oppressive rules. If you do something wrong, you will face a great tribulation. We have to talk about these things today, because at the bottom of a lake in Guangdong, the bodies of many women have been found. After the archaeologists conducted investigative research, they also came to a conclusion about an extremely cruel fact in history. Women have almost no status in feudal society Every country has its own supreme basic principles named law. It not only limits people’s words and deeds, but can also be a powerful weapon for people to protect themselves, the key to helping society to be harmonious and stable. However, in ancient times, the law was not quite like that. Many of the provisions set forth in the ancient laws were cruel and draconian, imposing cruel punishments on prisoners, there were various types of death sentences, and more and more tortures. For women without status in ancient times, the punishments were even harsher. There are even punishments specifically designed to deal with women only, many of which involve the use of corporal punishment. Because of her low status, women always have to accept all their mistakes. Emotional misbehavior is all about women. For example, if a woman is close to men other than her husband, it will be considered a violation of her virginity and imprisonment, and the most serious of all types of punishment is imprisonment in a pig cage. In the past, a woman’s virginity was the most important thing, so if many people wanted to slander or harm a woman, attacking from this aspect would be a fatal knife. The punishment for this is to put the woman in a bamboo pig cage, then dump a lot of rocks and drown her in the water until she dies. Confinement in a pig cage is the heaviest punishment. Women who are no longer virgins will be dealt with in this way. Therefore, the bamboo cages originally used to carry pigs are called “soaked pig cage” is for this reason. Blue Cave Lake in Guangdong is very famous and is loved by many people to visit and explore because under the lake there are many extremely strange caves. By chance, a diver while exploring found a lot of skeletons on the bottom of the lake. The man panicked and went ashore and called the police. When police arrived at the scene to collect the bones, they discovered that the skeletons were more than a hundred years old. So they contacted archaeologists and asked them to send experts to survey the site. After experts arrived and examined them, they confirmed that these were the remains of women from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Experts have also discovered that these women are all locked in feudal pig cages. However, after the establishment of the Republic of China, this punishment was gradually abolished. The notion that men despise women is also decreasing, and more and more women in society protect their legitimate rights and interests, flourishing in many fields.

Indian dance ants. The new owner of the throne has the ability to expand the ovaries, reducing the size of the brain to take over the responsibility of reproduction for the whole herd. The battle for the throne Ants have a relatively simple “class” distribution system. While the queen is responsible for laying eggs, the rest of the herd must find food, feed the ants, join the battle, and build nests. Only male ants and queens are capable of reproduction, and other ants cannot. If the queen dies, the whole herd must suffer the same fate. Similarly, the Indian dance ants (Harpegnathos Saltator scientific name) include queens, reproductive males and a group of worker ants who are females. Queen ants hold the highest position in the ant colony, living 5 times longer. Only it is allowed to give birth. In most species of ants, the queen is born, not chosen from a herd. However, the Indian jumping ants allow worker ants to compete for a chance to sit on the throne, becoming a queen ant. Research published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences in early April showed that, in this species, if the queen died, about 70% of the female ants in the herd would compete for the throne. . The fight lasted for about 40 days. The opponents used the beard to fight until the competing group had 5 – 10 remaining. These animals continue to spend the next days to reproduce because the ovaries are enlarged while the brain shrinks up to 25%. After the war, the winning child will expand her fertility like a queen and become the second queen. The others return to being a worker, so the ovaries shrink and the brain enlarges again. Professor Clint Penick, the lead author of the study, commented: “This is an unprecedented miracle in the insect world. The toughness of this species allows them to swap roles in the herd. Professor Penick has spent many years studying the Indian dance ants. When worker ants become queen ants, they are called “gamergates”. All worker ants in the herd are capable of reproduction, but they are only allowed to do so when they win the throne. In the natural world, many species of insects, like bees, also compete for dominance. But the jumping ants fight to give birth, which really impressed the scientific experts. When a gamergate becomes a queen, its body goes through a complex transformation process. The queen will stop producing the venom, change its behavior like evading intruders, not hunting. Notably, their brains shrank by 25%, while the ovaries were enlarged by 5%. Indian dance ants can shrink the brain, enlarge the ovaries. Looking for a solution To analyze the queen ant transformation, Penick and his team selected 60 gamergates, painted them to distinguish them, then quarantined them for several weeks. When isolated, gamergate decreased fertility. But when they returned to the herd, they were captured and imprisoned by the worker ants. Penick explains that the gamergates are being controlled by the whole herd. The worker ants stopped the other ants from reproducing because this behavior was beyond the queens of the queen ants. If it was discovered that a member with the same function as the queen ant, the worker ants would bite and detain it for many days even though it did not endanger its life. Scientists hypothesize that this behavior causes a series of internal changes to the gamergates, making them likely to become queen ants but also as worker ants. The transformation happens in a few days. The reason the Indian jumping ant’s brain can shrink is because the gamergate does not have to use the brain to forage, protect the nest from predators. Their main job is to reproduce, while worker ants need large brains to think about these problems. Another reason gamergate shrinks the brain is to conserve energy. This behavior has also been observed in the Etruscan shrew, a small mammal. Their brains shrink in the winter to limit energy, helping to keep other parts of the body warm. Some other animals also have the ability to change brain size such as ground squirrels, birds. White-crested sparrows, for example, create 68,000 new nerve cells during the breeding season to help them recognize mating calls. In winter, when food is scarce, some of the nerve cells die on their own, and in the spring, they revive again. But this phenomenon is rare in insects such as ants. While Rachelle Adams, a researcher in ant evolution and ecology at Ohio State University, thinks maybe this behavior is not as special as we think it is. The problem is that scientists have not fully understood and discovered about the Indian hopping ants may be the foundation for further research in this field. As brain modification is studied more and can be found in many different species, it will have special significance in understanding the human brain. For example, research into the brains of the Indian gerbil helps to understand more about genetic control, the ability of genes to control flexibility in animals and towards humans.

The soul is one of the ideas related to the ‘afterlife’, associated with legends and beliefs of many religions.

Dr. Duncan MacDougall and article on his soul weighing experiment. There have been several attempts to verify the existence of the soul, notably experiments by a famous doctor, to find out how much it weighs. Strange experiment Dr. Duncan MacDougall is a wealthy and respected physician in Haverhill (Massachusetts, USA). He has his own clinic and works at a medical facility called the Cullis Consumptives’ Home, which is for end-stage cases. In 1901, he came up with a strange idea, that is to determine whether the soul has or not, and if so, how much weight. MacDougall began experimenting on six patients who had lost hope of being cured. Four people with tuberculosis, one with diabetes and one with an unidentified disease, all of which did not last long in this world. He spent a lot of time recruiting only “patient who died of a debilitating illness, death with little or no muscle movement, because in that case the weight could be kept.” equal to more perfect and any loss that happens is ready to be noted ”. To make sure there were no mistakes, he meticulously measured a person’s weight before death, even noting slight changes in sweat and urine output. When the patients are dying, their entire beds are placed on an industrial-sized Fairbanks scale, with a sensitivity of 5.6 g. Along with four other doctors, MacDougall carefully recorded the weight changes of patients before and after their deaths. For the first patient, the weight loss observed immediately after apnea was 21g. A piece in the New York Times on March 11, 1907 recorded this moment: “When life ended, the weight of the needle suddenly dropped, as if something had just separated from the body. Immediately the usual post-mortem mass losses were calculated, but still 21 g was missing. According to MacDougall, this weight loss is not possible from the evaporation of moisture and sweat through the inhalation. The amount of air in his lungs was not the reason he brought air back to the patient’s body but the needle on the scale remained the same. Wastes or urine, if released, remain in bed and can only affect weight by slowly evaporating. MacDougall thinks this is an extremely promising development, and he does a similar procedure with the rest of the patient but the results are not the same. In the third patient there was a strange change that body mass did not change immediately after death but a minute later, body weight was reduced by 21g. The team only measured results from 4 patients, 2 of whom died before they could install the device. He then repeated his experiments with 15 dogs and found that they had no change in weight at the time of death. This was completely consistent with his belief that dogs had no soul. Later, a physics teacher at the Los Angeles Polytechnic School, USA also tried to conduct a similar experiment on mice in 1917. The results were consistent with the experiment of Dr. MacDougall, there was no deviation of weight when the rats died. How real? The scale used to weigh the soul. MacDougall’s research has caused a stir through articles in The New York Times, Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research and American Medicine. Many see this as evidence of the existence of the human soul, but others disagree. The limitation of the experimental subject has been criticized, while his methods are considered unscientific. For the general scientific community, the experiment has many shortcomings and has no real value. Some scientists point out that at the time of death, the lungs stop cooling the blood, causing the body temperature to rise slightly, the skin sweating – 21g in Dr. MacDougall’s experiment. At the same time, dogs do not have sweat glands, so they do not lose weight in this way after death. Despite these harsh criticisms, MacDougall defended his position, even conducting an experiment to photograph the human soul in 1911, but to no avail. After that, he almost fell into darkness, giving up experiments that proved humans have a soul, finally dying in 1920. There were also a few people who performed similar experiments over the years on animals, but MacDougal’s human experiments have never been tried or replicated since then. Does your research have any meaning? Regardless of the answer, the existence of the soul is not scientifically proven, and we will certainly never stop searching to answer one of the most important mysteries of existence. our own. Either way, the work of MacDougall still makes an interesting impression, not because of what he found (or failed to find) but because of what he “suggested” from his experiment. For many people, MacDougall’s ideas deserve to be studied and seriously discussed.

This article’s Professor and Doctor of Dermatology Duong Hy Xuyen (China) talk about the history of leprosy and the miracles that humans have fought to overcome this evil disease.

When you hear the word “leprosy”, what comes to mind first?

“Phong Village” is forgotten

Without a doubt, most people have this idea first in mind.

This is a somewhat frightening and remote topic, this bizarre disease has been too distant for us in the 21st century, far enough away to be forgotten.

Fifty years ago, hundreds of thousands of shunned leprosy people were still living in China, now it is hard to see them. The miserable patients are inherently seen as symbols of sin: leprosy and death are equated.

Leprosy is a chronic bacterial illness that can be written as leprosy, but it has nothing to do with madness. Perhaps to avoid such misunderstandings, this disease is often referred to as “leprosy”.

For thousands of years, leprosy has been considered an evil disease, even a symbol of evil, and under the tragic fate of leprosy patients, they continue to be tortured both physically and mentally, This is beyond our imagination.

In the old era, when medical technology was limited, medical equipment was scarce, leprosy was basically determined to be incurable since it had regionally contagious properties, the only way to Control of fluid growth is isolating the patient.

So, on the mountain, on an isolated island, a group of leprosy villages were built so that the sick lived there. There is no specific medicine or vaccine, and untreated self-resisting patients will continue to develop ulcers and disfigurement until they become paralyzed or even die.

Over time, people misunderstood, dispelled, and feared it, and the “scary” Phong was now a trademark of terror.

The end of the leprosy era

The leprosy history is long, stretching for 1400 years, like an endless nightmare.

It was not until 1874 that the Norwegian physician Hansen (GerhardH.A.Hansen) broke the darkness that he discovered the culprit – the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae.

Symptoms caused by Mycobacterium leprosy bacteria are manifested in the skin, peripheral nerves, mucosa of the upper respiratory tract and eyes, if not treated promptly can lead to blindness or deformity, disability and other consequences.

In other words, once leprosy is found, the disability rate will be very high. However, if the disability is detected early and treated promptly, the disability can be cured.

In current medical conditions, leprosy is already an easy-to-diagnose and treatable disease, currently in clinical use mainly a combination of many drugs and chemotherapy treatments, which can cure leprosy. Within 6-24 months, the contagiousness of the disease may disappear after a week of taking the drug.

Usually, if the patient unfortunately gets the disease, the patient does not need to have negative psychology and bewildered when treating this disease, on the one hand it will not be inherited, on the other hand, the survival rate of bacteria in vitro is low.

Generally, they can be destroyed by disinfection, most people have natural immunity (according to survey statistics with 90% or more), extremely low incidence, when infected. Nor does it need isolation, just treatment.

Darkness has long passed, the era when leprosy is “incurable disease” has been shortened by history. At present, there are basically few new cases, there is no so-called “leprosy village”, only more than 3,000 elderly people in community rehabilitation villages have survived the disease, but have also incapable of working, still facing sequelae.

Leprosy is not terrible

Although leprosy is rare, but because it is very similar to the symptoms of other diseases, it is possible to misdiagnose or omit the disease, so the prevention and treatment cannot be relaxed.

On the other hand, leprosy is a disease with a dark history. Even modern people will still have a lack of sympathy towards patients with fear of leprosy, which has become the biggest obstacle to leprosy prevention today.

So sometimes, it is not the terminal illness, but the hearts of people. Of course, society is not without action.

The last Sunday of January every year is “World leprosy Day”, many countries will organize many activities on this day to mobilize social forces to help leprosy patients overcome difficulties in their life. live and work to eliminate prejudice and discrimination.

There are also many volunteers entering the rehabilitation village, sharing, chatting, even eating, living together, giving care, warm care and making their best contributions. can.

The original purpose of writing this article was to hope everyone to have a correct understanding of leprosy, not to be bound by inherent impressions of the past. Leprosy is not as formidable and frightening as we can imagine. It can be seen from a scientific perspective, it will reduce the superficial evaluation and alienate the patient.
