Tourists visit the fish sauce production area at Khai Hoan fish sauce barrel house on Phu Quoc island. (Photo: Le Huy Hai/VNA) The profession of making fish sauce has existed for over 200 years and has been associated with the cultural life of the people of Phu Quoc island city. On May 27, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued Decision No. 1730/QD-BVHTTDL recognizing the profession of fish sauce making in Phu Quoc, Duong Dong ward, An Thoi ward, Phu Quoc city. Kien Giang province is a national intangible cultural heritage. It can be said that, in the context of difficulties due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, this is still a great joy, a motivation for people making fish sauce in Phu Quoc to continue preserving and promoting the quintessence of fish sauce. traditional profession left by his father. Chairman of the Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Association, Ho Kim Lien, said that Phu Quoc waters have many types of seaweed and plankton which are the main food source for anchovies, the main raw material for making fish sauce. Therefore, anchovies grow abundantly in this sea. More than 200 years ago, the profession of making fish sauce existed in Phu Quoc, people caught fresh anchovies and salted them right on the ship, before bringing them back to brew in barrels. Incubating anchovies in wooden barrels is a feature of Phu Quoc fish sauce making. Boi Loi is a type of wood used to make fish sauce barrels, which are abundant in Phu Quoc forest. The longer the barrel is left, the stronger the wood, the better the quality of the fish sauce. The barrel has a round cylinder with a wide mouth, made from 55 boards of equal sizes: 2.2m long, 20cm wide, 6cm thick; The diameter of the barrel mouth is about 3.2m, the bottom is about 2.6m. The barrel is strapped with green rattan in the forest. Ms. Ho Kim Lien said that fish sauce production is based on traditional manual methods with the recipe of 3 anchovies + 1 salt. It takes 10-15 months to produce fish sauce. From the first to the last water will be divided into different types of fish sauce, with different protein levels; Depending on the ratio of protein more or less from 20-43 protein, the price of fish sauce is different. Phu Quoc fish sauce has a brown color of cockroach wings with a characteristic flavor of mild aroma, salty taste, and sweet aftertaste. According to Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Association, Phu Quoc fish sauce began to thrive and flourish from 1945 to now. Since 1998, with the support of the French Embassy in Hanoi, the Ministry of Fisheries and the province Kien Giang conducting registration dossiers for geographical indications, on June 1, 2001, Phu Quoc fish sauce was the first product to be registered in Vietnam. In July 2013, the European Union (EU) awarded the “Phu Quoc” certificate of origin for Vietnamese fish sauce products in Brussels (Belgium). In August 2013, the Ministry of Industry and Trade handed over this certificate to the representative of the People’s Committee of Phu Quoc island district and the Association Phu Quoc fish sauce Since then, Phu Quoc fish sauce products have been protected and developed up to now. Currently, Phu Quoc city has about 100 fish sauce factories, concentrated in Duong Dong and An Thoi wards. The source of raw anchovies is currently limited, from now to 2025, Phu Quoc strives to produce 12 million liters of fish sauce per year on average. Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Association was established in October 2000, currently has 53 members. Chairman of Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Association Ho Kim Lien said that, in addition to the advantages of being protected by geographical indications, Phu Quoc fish sauce craft villages are always respected by the People’s Committee of Kien Giang province and the People’s Committee of Phu Quoc city. focus on maintaining and developing. Over the years, consumers everywhere have known about the Phu Quoc fish sauce brand, helping to sell more traditional products of the craft village. This is also a tourism products unique in the island city of Phu Quoc, attracting tourists to visit, learn about craft village culture in particular and discover the cultural life of people on Ngoc island. According to Ms. Ho Kim Lien, the difficulty of the current Phu Quoc fish sauce industry is that a part of consumers has not yet identified the genuine Phu Quoc traditional fish sauce, so the price is not stable. Currently, there is no planning for Phu Quoc fish sauce craft village, so the craft village has not been concentrated into a sightseeing place for tourists. To meet the development of craft village , Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Association hopes that there should soon be a concentrated craft village planning to stabilize production and business, create a favorable development environment for craft villages; At the same time, there is a gathering place, serving to introduce and promote the traditional fish sauce craft to visitors. Chairman of Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Association Ho Kim Lien said that in the coming time, Phu Quoc fish sauce will focus on developing quality rather than quantity, to continue affirming the quality of the brand. After being recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Phu Quoc fish sauce making continues towards being recognized by UNESCO as a world intangible cultural heritage. . This helps increase the brand value of Phu Quoc fish sauce, contributes to raising the local cultural heritage, and helps promote the image of the beautiful island city of Phu Quoc to international friends.

Ruins of a former children’s play area in Chernobyl. A dust-covered nuclear power plant, nestled among rubble piles and abandoned buildings is not a reminder of UNESCO’s world cultural heritage. But the Ukrainian government has ambitions to win this title for the Chernobyl plant. If successful, Chernobyl will join the ranks of the most iconic monuments to human culture and civilization, such as the ancient city of Petra in Jordan, the great pillars of Stonehenge, the Forbidden City of Beijing and the high-rise Easter Island in Rapa Nui. According to the UNESCO website, in order to be considered for inclusion on the World Heritage List, a site “must have outstanding universal value” and ensures at least one quality that matches the agency’s selection criteria. this. Some of the locations on the list represent spectacular and unique examples of natural grandeur, such as Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks in the United States; Halong Bay of Vietnam; Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Pristine Białowieża Forest between Russia and Belarus. Other locations, China’s Great Wall, Mexico’s Chichén Itzá ruins and the city of Venice, Italy, have earned a spot on the list for their importance in human history as well as its rare beauty. them. The sites on the list have certain legal protection and may receive financial support from the World Heritage Fund to help conserve it, according to UNESCO. In order for a site to be eligible for UNESCO listing, it must first be added to the list of historical and cultural heritage in its country of origin. According to the Ukrainian Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko: “We believe that the inclusion of Chernobyl on the UNESCO heritage list is the first and important step towards making this wonderful place a featured tourist destination for all mankind. care. The importance of the Chernobyl region goes far beyond Ukraine’s borders. It is not only about memories, but also about history and human rights ”. In fact, the tourism industry has been booming in the forbidden zone. One of the cities in the region – Pripyat, home to about 49,000 people in 1986 – is today an apocalyptic ghost town; The homes, schools and hospitals are uninhabited and are home to plants and wildlife. The forbidden zone was first opened to visitors in 2010, and Pripyat’s bizarre, overgrown buildings quickly became a popular destination for photographers and travel enthusiasts. disaster site. But the Chernobyl tourism industry really took off after the success of the 2019 thriller series on HBO, “Chernobyl”. Guides in Ukraine reported tour bookings in 2019 were up 30% from the previous year. About 124,000 tourists visited Chernobyl last year and about 100,000 of them came from outside Ukraine. Scientists are also monitoring Chernobyl to track how wildlife in the forbidden area adapts to levels of radiation exposure making the area unsafe for humans – and some findings They are surprisingly positive. For example, recent surveys show that gray wolves (Canis lupus) are thriving near Chernobyl, partly because they have many prey and many territories that have not yet been affected by humans. And a rare Asian wild horse known as the Przewalski (Equus ferus przewalskii) is also thriving in the restricted area.

Bovbjerg cliffs in the Vestjylland UNESCO Global Geopark (Photo: UNESCO) Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries that did not apply for new geopark recognition, the UNESCO Global Geopark Council decided to consider this year’s candidates from Old application form (period 2017-2019). In fact, evaluations of these geopark have been carried out since before the start of the pandemic. The management boards of these parks have also submitted additional information reports as requested by the Council. The new UNESCO Global Geopark is: 1. Vestjylland Global Geopark, Denmark About a third of the Geopark’s surface area is on the mainland, with the rest comprising marine areas in the Limfjord and the North Sea. The terrestrial part of the Geopark’s icy landscape are flat plains, lagoons and lakes formed by successive ice ages, especially the most recent ice age, Main Advance, took place 23,000 to 21,000 years ago. Wind and water are continuing to affect the landscape in very conspicuous ways. Geopark includes 13 areas Naruta 2000, 5 nature reserves and wildlife and more than 90 natural geological sites. Natura 2000 is the European Union’s ecological network, which includes important bird habitats and protected habitats that are important to other wildlife species of interest to the European Union. 2. Global Geopark Saimaa, Finland Geopark takes its name from Lake Saimaa, the largest lake in Finland and the 4th largest lake in Europe. Located in southeastern Finland, south of the Vuoksi water system, the Geopark stretches about 20 to 180 meters above sea level. One-third of the park’s 6,063 km² of surface area is water, dotted with thousands of islands, and a coastline of more than 8,000 km. The rocks of Saimaa point to the area’s as far back as 1,900 million years ago when it was part of the seabed. The rocky bedrock is formed over time when the sea water recedes, mountain folds take place, the rocks crystallize into gneisses and granite. The ancient foundation was further affected by the ice age, and land accretion continues to this day. The land of this area was formed in the past 20,000 years due to erosion of ice sheets. Since then, several unique and endangered species, including seal Saimaa and salmon, have been “isolated” in the area. Impressive stone paintings on the shores of the lake show human presence from the Stone Age. The location and features of the Geopark allow visitors to observe the patterns of ice lobe formation in Finland’s Lake District. Saimaa seal ring (Photo: Arto Hamalainen / UNESCO) (Photo: Arto Hamalainen / UNESCO) (Photo: Arto Hamalainen / UNESCO) (Photo: Arto Hamalainen / UNESCO) 3. Thuringia Inselsberg Global Geopark – Drei Gleichen, Germany Located in Thuringia, central Germany, the Geopark covers an area of about 988 km² at an altitude of 250 to 900 meters above sea level. The park’s geology records more than 150 million years of Earth’s history, from the merger of the Pangea supercontinent to the dissolution of the continent during the Late Triassic. Geopark’s distinctive fossil profile has been a subject of study for over 300 years, leading to the accumulation of great geological expertise. The fossilized reef here, among the first recognized in the 19th century, is a remnant of the formation of a small island surrounded by coral reefs in the Zechstein Sea. You can explore three of the Geopark’s hundreds of natural caves. The park’s Geo & Pleasure geo-tourism trail highlights the link between soil and local geology and traditional indigenous cuisine in the low mountains and loess regions. (Photo: Stephan Brauner Kerstin Fohlert / UNESCO) (Photo: Stephan Brauner Kerstin Fohlert / UNESCO) 4. The Geopark located in the Trans-European Garment Region (TESZ), a major tectonic boundary between the Variscan Western Foundation, the Pre-Cambrian Eastern Foundation and the reproductive belt of Alpine structures, is the key to Learn the geological structure of Europe. More importantly, this is the only site in the TESZ where sedimentary rocks representing the sequence of all geological periods from the Cambrian to the Quaternary are raised on the surface. The geology of the park, combined with human intervention over the centuries has resulted in a rich diversity of landscapes, flora and fauna. Traces of human activity in the Geopark date back 60,000 years, including Neanderthal camps and a beautiful cave system. Many ancient quarries are testament to the importance of mineral deposits, metal ores, limestone and other natural resources to local people over time. (Photo: Szymon Pawlak / UNESCO) (Photo: Szymon Pawlak / UNESCO) Quynh Hoa According to UNESCO

The opportunity for the name Ly Son (Quang Ngai) to be introduced on the world tourism map seems to be extinguished when the leader of this province asks the Department of Culture – Sports and Tourism to report to the Provincial People’s Committee to submit to the Standing Committee. Provincial Party Committee considered and decided to end the project of Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark.
The reason for the above decision, the provincial leaders stated many reasons, including the reasons for the unclear socio-economic efficiency.

Again, this project was started more than 5 years ago. Resolution of the XIXth Congress of the Party Committee of Quang Ngai province has identified the implementation of the project as one of the key tasks to promote socio-economic development, especially tourism. At the end of 2019, the Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark project was sent to UNESCO and passed the preliminary round, awaiting UNESCO’s recognition. But now, considering withdrawing the project, the opportunity for international tourists to know about this unique geological area is very fragile. Ly Son Island (Quang Ngai) – Photo: LE THI THU THANH Geopark is a unique natural area with high geological, historical and cultural value. Recognizing this geological area, the country will have specific regulations on planning and conservation to protect its unique value, while also introducing it to the world, especially tourists. For a province with few tourism products like Quang Ngai, this is an opportunity to promote the local image, revive the way of sustainable tourism. It is a pity to deny this opportunity while the revenue of the local tourism industry is still modest, only about 1,100 billion VND (in 2019). Ly Son island district in recent years is mentioned quite interestingly by many beautiful natural seascape. If only that, Ly Son is also difficult to compete with other destinations because our country has 28 provinces and cities bordering the sea with a length of more than 3,200 km and hundreds of islands near the shore. Beautiful scenery everywhere, but when it comes to geological parks recognized by UNESCO, there are only 3: Dong Van Rock Plateau (Ha Giang), Cao Bang Non-country and Dak Nong. Without perfect protection policy, soon Ly Son – Sa Huynh special geological area will be compromised. Look at Quang Nam’s “neighbor” doing tourism. An ancient town of Hoi An, quiet for hundreds of years, is suddenly a destination attracting tourists from all four directions. The idyllic, abandoned My Son in the forest has been awakened by great historical and cultural values … Quang Nam’s “Heritage Road” brand is always in the tourist handbook of international tourists for decades. More specifically by numbers: in 2019, Quang Nam attracts more than 4.6 million international visitors, tourism revenue of more than 4,600 billion. This is cultural – historical – scientific tourism, so immediate effects cannot be expected. However, cultural tourism will have a stable source of income, creating sustainable jobs for local residents. Therefore, Quang Ngai province needs to consider carefully when making a decision on the Ly Son – Sa Huynh Geopark project.
