In front of the Yu’s ancestral hall, I met the old man Yu Dakai, a master of Xichong lantern craftsmanship

When we first arrived in Xichong Village, we found a tall and magnificent Yu’s Ancestral Hall at the entrance of the village. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Yu clan in Xichong was a prominent family in Huizhou, with strong clan power and strict patriarchal clan system. Within a few days of traveling in Wuyuan, this can be regarded as the most magnificent, most complete, and most exquisitely carved ancestral ancestral building I have ever seen. Now it is also a national key cultural relics protection unit.

Originally, we came to this pristine village by accident. We didn’t expect that such exquisite ancient buildings were still hidden. At that time, we felt that this trip was a great value!

When visiting the Yu’s ancestral hall, we saw many lanterns hung in the ancestral hall, which was very beautiful. It happened that two villagers were walking out carrying lanterns. We ran over to talk and knew that this was a unique handicraft in Xichong Village, called Xichong lanterns!

In the Yu’s ancestral hall, we also found that the Xichong lantern has won the gold medal of the National Folk Lantern Competition.

After walking out of the ancestral hall, we discovered that the trail leading to the village was covered with lanterns on both sides. Each of these lanterns has a different shape, including square, rhombus, parallelogram, hexagon, rice-shaped, pagoda, and so on.

There is a seven-story six-sided pagoda-shaped lantern that is really beautiful, with poems and paintings written on each side, which is very elegant. The carvings on the tower are all hollow. The most amazing thing is that there is a revolving lantern inside, but unfortunately the photos did not show the feeling of revolving lanterns.

After walking around the village, we walked out of the village again and came to the pond at the entrance of the village. There is a wooden plank road in the pond at the entrance of the village. The plank road is also full of colorful lights. We met Master Yu who we met just outside the ancestral hall.

Master Yu’s full name is Yu Dakai, who was born in 1946 and is 75 years old this year. But he is so spirited, he really can’t tell his actual age at all! It can only be said that the beauty Xi Shi chooses to be this place of death, and the landscape is too supportive.

Master Yu told us a lot about the history of Xichong lanterns. The traditional handmade craftsmanship of Xichong lanterns has been around for more than 500 years, but for 50 to 60 years, no one has made them again. In the past few years, the village has re-convened the elderly in the village to dig out and sort out the craftsmanship of making lanterns, and this has reappeared in people’s vision.

Xichong lanterns are made of bamboo stents, and all the steps are handmade. The lanterns have different shapes and different patterns, but they are all composed of objects related to Huizhou elements, such as archways, pavilions, seven-story towers, horse head walls, fish tanks, vases, and so on.

Master Yu told us that there will be a lantern festival in the village at night, which is more beautiful. Unfortunately, our decision to come to Xichong Village was made temporarily. We didn’t arrange our accommodation in advance. I was afraid that we would not be able to call the car back to the county seat later, so we had to leave early.

If you just walk into a village in Wuyuan, you will have unexpected gains. They may have a paradise-like beauty, may have amazing ancient Huizhou architecture, or may have a profound Huizhou culture… Wangkou Village is one of them.

Wangkou is a scenic spot on the east line of Wuyuan Tourism, but it is often overlooked by tourists. There are not only the famous “Huangling” on the east line, and the earliest famous “Li Keng” in Wuyuan. Although this village is also included in the Wuyuan 5-day tour package, not many tourists come here. When we came here, looking at this authentic ancient village surrounded by mountains and rivers, it is hard to imagine that this was once the most prosperous place in Wuyuan.

Wangkou Village is a village dominated by the surname Yu. It has been more than 1,100 years since the relocation of the tribe led by Yu Gao, a doctor of the Song Dynasty, in 1110 AD (the third year of Song Daguan). The two rivers in front of Wangkou Village meet, face water on three sides, surrounded by mountains, and the scenery is beautiful.

Wangkou Village got its name because of the clear water and the long flowing water. During the period of relying on water transportation, Wangkou became an important land and water terminal of Huizhou Prefecture, an important route between north and south, and has the reputation of “ancient commercial port in a thousand years”.

In the eighth year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1375), the Ming Dynasty government set up a “post” in Wangkou to deliver official documents and materials, becoming the first official “post office” in Wuyuan’s history. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Wangkou shops were lined up with merchants, and ships from north to south sold the good tea here at home and abroad. At this time, Wangkou became a “window” for Wuyuan to communicate with the outside world, and it was prosperous for a while.

However, with the decline of water transportation, Wang Kou gradually faded out of the stage of history. This once extremely prosperous Huizhou commercial port has finally become lonely. When we came to Wangkou, our first feeling was the tranquility here.

This tranquility stems from the quietness of Wangkou, surrounded by mountains and rivers, from the simplicity and loneliness of the ancient village, and probably also from the lack of tourists.

Today’s Wangkou is not big, only a thousand-year-old street. The old street is paved with bluestone and narrow and cramped. Along the way, you will encounter ancient houses such as “Yijingtang”, “Mao Detang”, “Doctor Di” and “Yangshuwu”, but the most worth seeing is that the village is built on the east side facing the water. Wangkou was once a prosperous business, which also led to the prosperity of talents here. In the first year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1736 AD), Yu Yinglun, a tribe who was an official in Beijing, returned to his native province and took the lead in donating funds to build the famous “Yu’s Ancestral Hall”. Now this ancient building has also become a national key cultural relics protection unit.

“Yu’s Ancestral Hall” is grand in scale, with a total area of ​​1116 square meters, rectangular shape, 15.6 meters wide, 42.6 meters deep, sitting from the northwest to the southeast. The overall building is made of the valuable local camphor tree material in Wuyuan and exquisite three-carving craftsmanship. It’s still awe-inspiring. In a secluded courtyard next to the ancestral hall, a century-old golden osmanthus tree and a century-old silver osmanthus tree have also become a unique landscape.

Walking out of the Yu’s ancestral hall, you can see another unique landscape in Wangkou-a 120-meter-long “Pingdu Weir”. The “Pingdu Weir” designed by Qing dynasty scholar and phonologist Jiang Yong is a masterpiece in the history of water conservancy construction in my country. The southern end is docked, and the northern end is a 6-meter-wide boat and boat channel with the waste razor clams in Yanshan and the dangerous tritium marsh. Pingdu Weir solves the contradiction between water storage, boating, and water pressure reduction at the same time without a gate. The completion of Pingdu Weir enabled Wangkou to form 18 Hebu wharves for the transshipment of goods, and this also illustrates the prosperity of Wangkou from the side.

When we came, we walked along the ancient street. When we returned, we walked along the river embankment and saw many old people washing vegetables in the river, full of life. What is rare is that the river water in Wangkou is still clear and green. Wangkou is not the once prosperous Wangkou, but it is still the watery Wangkou…

Jiangwan is a tourist attraction on the east line of Wuyuan, 28 kilometers away from the county seat. It is also an ancient village with a long history and culture. At the end of the Sui Dynasty and the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, people with the surnames of Teng, Ye, Bao, and Dai lived in the river bays and were originally called “Yunwan”. In the second year of Shenzong Yuanfeng in the Northern Song Dynasty (1079), the eighth ancestor of Xiaojiang, Jiangdi, first moved to Jiangwan, and his descendants gradually multiplied into giants, which was later renamed “Jiangwan”. In history, many literati came out of the village. Today, the village still retains the official residences of the Ming and Qing Dynasties such as Yushifu and Zhongxiandi, and there are also typical Huizhou merchants’ residences such as the Teng Family Old House, Sanshengtang, Dunchongtang and Peixintang . The largest private residence in Jiangwan, “One Mansion and Six Courtyards,” also collapsed in a fire in the 1980s and fell into ruins.

Of course, the most magnificent building is the Xiaojiang Ancestral Hall at the entrance of the village. Xiaojiang Ancestral Hall, also known as Yongsi Temple, was built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. It was once known as the first of the four ancient buildings in Wuyuan and one of the most famous ancestral halls in the south of the Yangtze River. But today our ancestral hall was rebuilt in 2003.

There are also places where you can visit the Jiangwan Scenic Area, but there are too many ancient villages in Wuyuan. In contrast, here is a bit “commercial”. The scenic area of ​​Jiangwan is separated from the residential area. There are no well-preserved villages within the scenic area. There are only a few ancient Huizhou buildings scattered among them, and most of them are commercial shops.

Qingyuan was built in the Kaiyuan reign of the Tang Dynasty (674 AD) and has a history of more than 1,300 years. It is also a village located at the junction of the three provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangxi in a true sense. It is surrounded by mountains, separated from Wulong Mountain in Xiuning County, Huangshan City, Anhui Province, and separated by Jinmaling Mountain from Kaihua, Zhejiang. The village was built in a valley between two mountain ridges. It was the place chosen by the ancestors to avoid chaos. Because of the remote and beautiful environment, it is known as the “Little Peach Garden”.

The distance from Jiangling to Qingyuan Village is not too far, but all the way along the winding mountain road, the large sea of ​​wild azaleas on the rock walls on both sides of the mountain also allows us to see the beauty of another color in Wuyuan in spring. On the way, I also encountered a mountain lake, inlaid in the mountains like jasper, which is very magnificent.

Hovering all the way deep in the mountains, we finally arrived at the ancient village. Qingyuan Village was built along a small stream. The houses on both sides of the stream are uneven. Every few meters there is a small bridge connecting the two banks. Visitors can walk through it freely. There is a kind of ancient charm of “small bridge and flowing water people”.

Qingyuan Village is a multi-surnamed village dominated by Zhan, and it is also one of the birthplaces of the Zhan family in Huizhou. The ancestral home of the famous Chinese railway engineer Zhan Tianyou is here. For thousands of years, Qingyuan Village has experienced many celebrities, especially during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Today, the village still retains dozens of ancient Hui-style houses typical of the Ming and Qing dynasties, such as the old mansions of dignitaries such as “Da Shi Di”, “Doctor Di” and “Zhi Zheng Di”, telling of the past glory here.

In the residential buildings along the river bank of Qingyuan Village, a wooden roof is mostly set up in front of the gate, and there are chairs on the side along the river. It is said to be a place for pedestrians and villagers to rest and enjoy the coolness. Every interval there are stone steps down to Xibu for the villagers to wash clothes and vegetables. We walked and stopped all the way, and saw many villagers slurping here, and lamented that this is probably the most authentic ancient village.

Along the small river all the way down, through a stone covered bridge, is a natural rapeseed terraced field. We came from Jiangling. Most of the rapeseeds in Jiangling have died, and the rapeseeds in Qingyuan are still blooming. Probably because of the high altitude and low temperature. There were almost no tourists here, and we also had a great time playing in the sea of ​​flowers.

However, because of the high altitude, when we came at the end of March, the peach blossoms on both sides of the stream in Qingyuan Village had just emerged with red buds. If you go at this time, the peach blossoms are in full bloom, which is another kind of beauty.

Qingyuan Village now has no tickets and no commercial development, and it still maintains its original ecological appearance. Because the road is remote, it has not been surrounded by large-scale tourists. However, when we came, we still met some photographers and painters who came here to collect the scenery. Until we actually arrived in Wuyuan, Jiangxi, we didn’t know how many scenic spots there are in “China’s only scenic spot named after the entire county”! The beauty of Wuyuan is distributed among villages, towns, and villages. The 180 yuan travel package valid for 5 days includes 12 scenic spots, which is not counted as many original ecological villages that are free of tickets.

Among all the scenic spots in Wuyuan County, Huangling is considered the most famous. The tour package for 12 scenic spots is 180 yuan, and the ticket for a Huangling scenic spot is 145 yuan. This difference makes us hesitate whether we should go to Huangling to see it. After all, we who have already bought a travel package must also consider the itinerary. It’s enough to play the attractions in the package, and you have to buy tickets to go to Huangling. Is it really worth a visit?

We decided to come to Huangling for a look on the return bus from the northern line. After visiting Sixiyan Village, I went to the original ecological ancient village-Xichong at the recommendation of the local villagers. When I returned, I called Didi. The driver’s master is a local, who often takes tourists to charter a car and is very familiar with Wuyuan tourism. At that time, he also recommended to us several free original ecological ancient cities, Zhangcun and Hongguan Guzhangcun, which are said to be very good.

When we asked: Is Huangling worth a visit? The driver’s master immediately gave an affirmative answer, saying: Huangling is the representative of Wuyuan, and I still recommend it.

So the next day we got on the tourist bus bound for Huangling from North County Station at 6:40. After more than 40 minutes, I came to this ancient village in deep mountains, more than 40 kilometers away from Wuyuan County.

The history of Huangling Village began in the middle of the Ming Dynasty, more than 500 years ago. Huangling is surrounded by mountains. The whole village relies on the 600-meter Shier Mountain. More than 100 ancient dwellings are scattered among the mountain nests with a drop of 100 meters. The small mountain village will be surrounded by fog in the early morning, and it will appear and disappear like a fairyland, so it is also called “Tiyun Renjia”.

Opposite the small village is 10,000 mu of terraced fields. From the valley to the mountainside layer upon layer, it is dependent on the mountains. The most amazing thing is that there is a heart-shaped pond in the ten thousand acres of terraced fields, like a heart of nature, beating in the secret ancient village deep in the mountains.

The beauty of Huangling is beyond doubt. There are layers of ancient houses, 10,000 mu of terraced fields, and a large area of ​​yew, a rare and endangered national first-class protected plant, which should be good all year round. The most beautiful seasons are spring and autumn. In spring, see 10,000 acres of rape blossoms, and in autumn, see the characteristic “dry autumn” culture. We came in the spring. This year, Wuyuan was rainy. We also saw the tail of rape blossoms at the end of March, but it was really amazing.

The fly in the ointment is that it is too crowded. When Huangling became Wuyuan’s business card, it was inevitably flooded with commercialization. Walking in Huangling, every corner seems to be filled with tourists forever. If you want to take a picture of the empty scene without tourists, you can only snap a snap at the location. The beauty of the ancient village should have been quietly appreciated and slowly listened to. The bustling tourists have greatly reduced the beauty of Huangling. This may be a common problem with all famous commercial attractions.
