Built in 1875-1898, Phat Diem stone church (Ninh Binh) is one of the most famous ancient architectural works in Vietnam. Not everyone knows that there are 6 different large and small churches.
1. The largest scale and also the central work of the architectural complex of Phat Diem stone church is the St. Joseph church. This church was built in 1891 with the official name of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, now Phat Diem Cathedral.
This church was built of slate, inside there is a wooden frame system with 6 rows of monolithic ironwood columns. The building is 74 meters long, 21 meters wide, 15 meters high, with four roofs and five entrances under the elaborate stone arches. The roof of the church has a low curvature like the communal roof, the temple roof of the Vietnamese.
2. To the left and right of the house thanks to Lon, each side has two small churches, all bearing the same features as Vietnamese temples. The first is the Church of St. Joseph located in the front row on the right. This is the place of worship of St. Joseph, the father of Jesus.
This church was built in 1896, the outside is made of concrete with stone bars, the inside is entirely made of iron wood, extremely intricately carved.
3. Behind St. Joseph’s is the Church of St. Peter. In Christianity, Peter is the chief apostle among Jesus’ 12 apostles, directly empowered by Jesus to rule the Church.
St. Peter’s Church was also built in 1896, similar in construction to St. Joseph’s. The wooden structures of St. Peter’s Church are made of jackfruit wood, some restorations are made of sapwood. The special feature of the project is that the entire altar is placed on a 20-ton stone slab.
4. The Church of St. Thomas is located in the front row, on the left side, symmetrical with St. Joseph’s through the Cathedral. In Catholicism, St. Thomas is the patron of the plague victims.
Built in 1895, initially the church was named St. John Tien hô, in the 1923 cholera, it was renamed St. Rome Church with the desire to help parishioners overcome the epidemic. The furniture is made from jackfruit wood, beautifully carved.
5. The Church of the Heart of Jesus is located behind the Church of St. Thomas and is symmetrical with St. Peter’s Church through the Cathedral. This church was built in 1889 to celebrate the sacrifice and love of Jesus. The facade has three towers similar to St. Joseph’s.
The unique feature of the Church of the Heart of Jesus is the interior made of honeycomb wood, with a glossy surface like smeared on honey. The altars are made of stone, the front of the main altar is engraved with three animals representing Jesus’ virtue: sheep (lamb), pelicans, and lion.
6. Located behind, on the right of the Phat Diem church complex, there is a church made entirely of stone, often called the Stone Church. This church was built in 1883 with the original name of the Chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Our Lady.
