Huawei will launch a new smartphone operating system Harmony on June 2, aiming to recover damage caused by the US embargo on the mobile division.

The US has banned Google from providing technical support for new Huawei phone models and blocked access to the Google Mobile Services developer suite. It is not clear if the Chinese company will introduce a new smartphone at the same time as Harmony, or if Harmony will be updated on models sold on the market. Harmony OS can only partially mitigate the impact of US sanctions on Huawei’s mobile division. The US ban in 2019 also barred Huawei from accessing important US-origin technology, hindering its ability to design its own chips and buy components from outside manufacturers. Once the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, Huawei currently ranked 6th globally with a market share of 4% in the first quarter. The administration of former US President Donald Trump accused the Chinese telecommunications giant of threatening national security. This week, Huawei founder Nham Chinh Phi urged employees to “dare to lead the world in software”, moving into an area where the US cannot influence.
