As for the reason for levying additional surcharges, Japan Post stated that it is mainly due to the global spread of the new crown epidemic, which has led to a decrease in air transportation and a continuous increase in transportation costs. Additional surcharges are only applicable to special regions, including Oceania, North and Central America, the Middle East, Europe and other regions.

It is understood that from January 1, 2021, electronic data for customs clearance in Japan will become a mandatory requirement. If submitted in the form of handwritten EMS labels, it may lead to the risk of customs clearance or return to the destination country. In addition, the U.S. Post Office has issued a notice that handwritten labels cannot be used for goods shipped to the United States. Therefore, Japan Post recommends that customers register as “international mail” as soon as possible to prepare for the restoration of EMS services to the United States.

Japan Post also announced that it will no longer issue “Seagull” summer greeting postcards with lottery starting this summer. The postcard is mainly used for promotion in businesses and stores, but due to the popularity of e-mail, the circulation has decreased. Last summer, due to the epidemic, economic activities were suppressed and utilization was drastically reduced.
