For those who like island tourism, Zhoushan, with more than 1,300 islands, is undoubtedly a treasure city, and Shengsi, the northernmost part of the Zhoushan archipelago, is one of them. There are nearly one-third of Zhoushan’s large and small islands. Flower and Bird Island is the most famous one. Although the other Baijie Island is not as well-known as the former, it also has a beautiful coastline and a historic lighthouse. Baijieshan Lighthouse is located at the upper southern end of Baijie Mountain (island), Xiaoguanao Village, Caiyuan Town, Shengsi County. It was built in the 9th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1883). The lighthouse appeared in China very late in history, and it can be regarded as an exotic product to be precise. After the Opium War in 1840, Western powers built many lighthouses on the islands of the Shengsi Islands in order to facilitate access to Shanghai. These lighthouses have a strong colonial color, forming a special landscape. Apart from the lighthouse element, Baijie Island itself is an island worth visiting. Although the sea does not make much difference, the sea has a natural healing power. There is a strong island style here. Staying on the island for three or two days has a strong sense of summer ritual. Walking on the island, you can feel the breath of the sea at any time. The low-rise buildings standing on the seashore, the fishing boats with filters of old time, the warm and kind islanders… There are 101 moments and reasons that are reminiscent of the freshness of literature and art. On the way to the lighthouse, you can see abandoned military barracks and demolished military installations from time to time along the way, as well as a small reservoir built halfway up the mountain. Now that the reservoir has been abandoned, the five-pointed star carved with cement on the reservoir and the words “Take the island as a home, keep the island for a long time” are clearly visible, which faithfully record the hard life of the PLA officers and soldiers who were stationed in coastal defense. The wind that belongs to the island alone is warm and gentle, making people flutter. Like the lighthouses people see in photos and pictures, the Baijiedao lighthouse is red and white and resembles a cylinder. The main lighthouse faces south and consists of lighthouses, wells, and annexes. The tower is 14.3 meters high, exchanges light once every 60 seconds, and has a range of 22 nautical miles. On March 5, 2013, 14 lighthouses including Baijieshan Lighthouse, Huaniao Lighthouse and Banyangjiao Lighthouse in Shengsi County were announced as the seventh batch of national key cultural relics protection units “East Zhejiang Coastal Lighthouses”. Nowadays, the function of Baijie Lighthouse as a lighthouse almost does not exist, but for local islanders, especially fishermen who go to sea, floating on the sea full of unknown factors, seeing the lighthouse means seeing home. Although it was a lighthouse built in the late Qing Dynasty, its architectural style is not completely Chinese. In the 1840s, in the era of “European style and beauty, rain comes late”, Eastern and Western cultures collided in coastal cities and islands with chronological sparks. For modern people, seeing such buildings is a bit special. Therefore, it has become a very characterful place to check in, and it is easy to take unique photos. Baijie Lighthouse can be said to be the tallest building on the island, and it is also a landmark building. It can be seen almost anywhere on the island.
