Doctor Tu Dung: “Meeting Men is Duyen, treating Men is Destiny”
A year ago, the community made waves with the case of patient Le Van Men (An Giang) with a severely deformed face. For 15 years, people called him with the painful name “demon-faced boy”. For the same amount of time, eating and drinking was like torture for him, and he couldn’t sleep like everyone else because he couldn’t breathe when lying down. Just like that, he “existed” but never really lived. Looking to JW Korea Cosmetic Hospital in May 2020 with the hope of getting rid of the evil disease, Mr. Men was diagnosed with Melkersson Rosenthal Syndrome by Dr. BS Nguyen Phan Tu Dung (Director of JW Hospital) MRS). MRS is a rare disease, with an estimated incidence of 0.08% of the world population. Until now, Mr. Men was recorded as the first case of MRS Syndrome in Vietnam. To prove that Mr. Men has MRS syndrome, Dr. Tu Dung spent more than 4 months working hard with a research team including Professors, Associate Professors, Doctor of Internal Medicine/Surgery, PhD Student of Medicine, … rich experience from the United States, Japan, Vietnam. Mr. Men – the first patient with MRS syndrome in Vietnam has had a spectacular change after 1 year of being treated by Dr. Tu Dung. Dozens of tests were performed, of which up to 3 pathological diagnoses were performed at 7 different testing centers, more than 75 samples were analyzed. In addition, these patient samples were also taken to 3 genetic diagnostic centers for gene decoding. The first Vietnamese doctor to make a splash at the World Medicine Awards At the end of October 2020, after many efforts, a Vietnamese medical research project with the topic “ Severe facial deformity and multi-organ dysfunction in a patient with 15-year undiagnosed Melkersson Rosenthal Syndrome. was honored as the runner-up at the US National Conference on Internal Medicine announced by the ACOI (American College of Osteopathic Internists) association. The study that proved Mr. Men with MRS Syndrome won the runner-up prize at the American Internal Medicine Association For the first time in the history of Vietnamese medicine, a research project has surpassed thousands of works worldwide, entered the Top 150 outstanding works, entered the final round. With 3 major surgeries, 12 months of treatment, 29 hours of anesthesia are impressive numbers to remember a challenging journey of JW Hospital team, and Dr. Tu Dung. Men’s face from 26cm has now been reduced to 18cm. Especially, after 15 years, Mr. Men can pronounce words roundly, and lie on his back like many people.
