According to data reported by Jiwei.com, as of 2019, the number of people directly engaged in the integrated circuit industry in my country is about 511,900. According to the previous estimates of the China Institute of Electronic Information Industry Development and the Software and Integrated Circuit Promotion Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the demand for talents in my country’s integrated circuit industry will be about 720,000 by 2020, and the current talent gap for integrated circuits is more than 200,000.
To fill this gap, in July 2020, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council voted to establish a first-level discipline of “Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering”. As one of the most important training bases for integrated circuit talents in my country, Tsinghua University voted to establish a doctoral and master degree authorization point for first-level disciplines in integrated circuit science and engineering in October 2020. In April 2021, on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of Tsinghua University, after discussion and approval by the 158th Standing Committee of the 14th Party Committee of Tsinghua University, it was decided to establish Tsinghua University School of Integrated Circuits.
Since the establishment of the semiconductor major in 1956, Tsinghua University has always played a main role in the training of integrated circuit talents in my country. According to statistics, the school has so far cultivated more than 4,000 undergraduates, 3,000 masters, and 500 doctoral students in the field of integrated circuits. In the past five years, more than 70% of the graduates have entered the integrated circuit industry and scientific research.
According to media statistics, there are as many as 27 well-known chip companies founded by alumni who graduated from Tsinghua University. Among the top ten companies in China’s semiconductor integrated circuit market by market value in 2020, companies founded by Tsinghua alumni or serving as CEOs occupy 6 seats, and take the top 3. These companies have raised more than 100 billion yuan from national funds and A shares, creating a Tsinghua chip circle with a market value of more than 600 billion yuan.
Ten years of trees and a hundred years of cultivation of people, the cultivation of talents has never been achieved overnight, especially for integrated talents such as integrated circuits that require the cultivation of scientific systems. Integrated circuit disciplines are based on physics, chemistry, materials science and other disciplines, involving in-depth integration of electronic information, instrument science and technology, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering and other related engineering disciplines. It has a deep theoretical background and distinctive engineering characteristics. It requires not only solid and systematic basic knowledge and theoretical training of interdisciplinary knowledge, but also engineering training that integrates production and education, practical training and practice, and more importantly requires the shaping of excellent humanistic literacy and comprehensive and balanced ability.
With the establishment of the School of Integrated Circuits of Tsinghua University, it is foreseeable that this world-class university will further integrate relevant superior disciplines, focus on the core technology of integrated circuits, and accelerate the cultivation of high-level talents in the field of integrated circuits.
