Stanford University researchers have combined artificial intelligence software with a device, called a brain-computer interface, implanted in the brain of a person with total paralysis. The software can decode information from the brain to quickly convert the man’s thoughts into writing on the computer screen.

Algorithms were designed in Stanford’s Neural Prosthetic Translation Lab. T5 generated text at a rate of about 18 words per minute (the average person can say about 23 words per minute on a smartphone). Even, T5 then reached a record of 40 characters per minute. The study was published online May 12, 2021 in the journal Nature. It offers hope to hundreds of thousands of Americans and millions around the globe, who have lost the ability to use their upper limbs or speak due to spinal cord injury, stroke or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
