The small house is optimized for use, with front and back yards for family members to do fishing.
The house is located in a new resettlement area in Nha Trang, a coastal city with white sand and clear water. Nha Trang is also famous for its fisheries that are part of the post-tourism economy. However, it is facing problems such as loss of traditional occupations due to rapid urbanization. On the contrary, the building chooses a different way to address the challenges and orients the house in a socially responsible way. Accordingly, the architect proposes to build a small house that optimizes basic functions to leave space for the front yard and backyard as a place for family members to operate according to traditional occupations. It also creates a play place for the little ones. In addition, the architects also proposed a façade with a flexible structure to avoid sunlight from the west and the user can open and close at will. The flexible facade consists of twelve modules with steel frames and wooden shutters. The peculiarity of a house facing the West is that the air is cool all day, by the West – South wind, one of the main winds of Nha Trang, except in the afternoon when the house is burned. The façade creates a space that brings users closer to a traditional Vietnamese house with iconic porches and moldings. Limited budget is also a concern with the final cost of about $35,000 (about 800 million VND). Therefore, two solutions to reduce costs are using recycled materials and lending space. As for the finishing, the architect used raw materials without finishing layers, making the house more rustic and intimate. In addition, wood panels from the old house are reused to create furniture such as the kitchen, sofa, table and steps of the stairs. The solution for a small house is to lend the space instead of dividing the house into small spaces. As a result, construction costs are significantly reduced.
