The Bangkok government has issued mandatory masks to gradually reduce the number of new COVID-19 cases in the city, and ordered the closure of 31 businesses for two weeks from April 26. Closed facilities include cinemas, zoos, Internet cafes, public swimming pools, fitness centers, libraries, museums, parks, and beauty treatments. Meanwhile, shopping malls will be allowed to open from 11am to 9pm daily, and convenience stores will close from 22pm the night before to 5 am the next morning. In addition, any gathering of 20 or more people will be banned. The Bangkok metropolitan area government requires everyone in the capital to wear a mask at all times when outdoors or at home. Violations will result in fines of up to 20,000 baht (approximately $ 600) under Section 51 of the 2015 Disease Control Law. Although the maximum fine for violating the masking rule is 20,000 baht, officials may consider a lower fine based on the fine regulation, which is 6,000 baht for the first violation. 12,000 baht for the second time and 20,000 baht for the third time onwards. Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has become one of the first to be fined under the capital’s regulations that require people to wear masks when leaving the house.
