CDI water filtration technology allows to retain natural minerals, adjust the mineral content. This is the research result of scientists at the Center for Research and Development of High-Tech Park in Ho Chi Minh City.

Removes water-soluble dirt Dr. Do Huu Quyet, Center for Research and Deployment of High-Tech Park in Ho Chi Minh City, said that CDI is a Capacitive Deionization (CDI) capacitance technology, derived from the super absorption technology of supercapacitors. CDI water filtration technology has been certified to meet the standards at the TQC Quality Testing and Certification Center and meets the national technical requirements of TCVN 11978: 2017. “The development of supercapacitor technology in recent years has created electrodes that can store large amounts of electrical charge in their hearts. Applying the same principle, if one considers water a solution where 99% of the substances are electrolytes (including toxic substances, micronutrients, dissolved salts …), one can give a stream of Light electricity runs through the water. Use electrodes to absorb the dissolved substances from the water and store on the plate for the pure water to pass through. When the electrode is full of electrolytes, it can reverse the current to release harmful substances and use another small stream of water, causing the electrode to return to its original state. Under ideal conditions, the poles can be charged 1 million times while still retaining 80% of the performance. The discharge – charge properties are similar to the supercapacitors that the water filter elements can work continuously with a very long lifespan, up to 5 – 10 years, ”said Dr. Quyet. Drinking water must provide essential nutrients such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, iodine, phosphorus … If only using purified water according to RO technology completely will lead to a lack of minerals. Super absorbent water filtration technology will create mineral water, kill bacteria, safe for health. Electrostatic CDI water purification technology can separate salt and water-soluble chemicals to create a drinking water source that ensures essential mineral levels, good for health. Safe water does not contain harmful toxins such as pesticides, fertilizers, heavy metals, cancer-causing oxidants, neutral or slightly alkaline pH, no harmful bacteria and delicious taste. The filtration system is designed like other water filtration systems, the only difference is that the CDI filter element is located just below the tap. The structure of the filter core is essentially a lot of electrodes combined together to absorb dirt. In the water, heavy metal components are immediately attracted to these electrodes. Meanwhile, the mineral components will be retained flowing through the membrane filter to the tap. In addition, the CDI filter element also has a micro ultrafiltration filter that removes suspended substances. Because water is circulated in the same direction with the filter, there is no tearing of the membrane, causing bacteria and toxic substances to escape. In addition to retaining minerals, filtering toxins, killing bacteria, CDI technology also has a high filtration efficiency when retaining 70 – 95% of water, the amount of wastewater compared to RO technology is much smaller (from 20-25 % compared with 50-70%). Especially, CDI filtered water always has air particles formed by minerals, tastes delicious, easy to drink … Due to the nature of the electrodes that will absorb toxins, users can adjust the amount of minerals at will by adjusting the electric current on the machine. Increasing the voltage to the highest level will produce the output water as pure water, decreasing with each degree, the mineral content will increase according to the needs of the user. Provide safe water for hospitals, schools Dr Quyet said the team’s future intention is to build large-capacity brackish water filtration systems integrated into water treatment plants in the West. Most of the provinces here do not have factories that can handle this problem. Traditional technologies have proved ineffective because they are expensive and fail quickly. Meanwhile, people often have to buy fresh water at the price of 50,000 – 100,000 VND / m3 during the salty drought. The essence of RO technology is to squeeze water through a filter to retain salt and obtain a stream of pure water, with both salt and water molecules too small to be easily pressed through the membrane, so the filtration process will requires great pressure and consumes a lot of energy. As a result, RO technology creates waste water flow up to 40% – 70%. Although RO wastewater can be used for purposes with less stringent standards such as irrigation, washing, washing … but other water purification technology developers are still striving to earn billions. clean water rates for living as high as possible in the same cost range. Because the operating principle of CDI technology is to “pick up” particles of salt and toxic substances out of the water stream, Dr. Quyet said that the amount of wastewater disposed of is only about 5-10%. According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan, Director of Vietdream Technology Co., Ltd, the goal of the business is to provide optimal, safe and effective water filtration solutions for users. The company does not sell water purifiers but only supplies filtration technology to partners with needs such as buildings, hospitals, schools, businesses using high standards of water, water purification plants. small and medium scale, enterprises producing food and beverages … With the co-founding of a technology company named Vietdream to commercialize this new water purification technology, Dr. Quyet hopes to “produce CDI water filters to replace RO filters”. Although the initial investment cost of CDI technology can be 2-3 times higher than RO technology, due to the difference in membrane life and operating cost, the overall cost of the first year of these two technologies are being equal. Currently, 70% of materials for Vietdream’s CDI water purification technology have been localized, including electrodes made from carbon nanotubes and polymers, water filtration modules and control systems. This trend could be reduced if they build more efficient supply chains or become widely accepted by the market.
