IT House April 14 news foreign media Windows Latest reported that Google Chrome browser 90 is currently gradually rolling out multiple consumer-centric features and security improvements to users on Windows 10, macOS, Linux and mobile devices. Chrome 90 is also the first browser version to automatically load all URLs through the more secure HTTPS protocol.

In Chrome browser 89 or earlier, if you enter a URL in the address bar of Chrome, the browser will first ping the HTTP (non-secure) version of the website, and then redirect the user to the HTTPS (secure) version. After installing the latest update of Google Chrome, Chrome 90 will ping the HTTPS version of the website instead of the non-secure protocol.

IT Home is informed that Google Chrome has blocked the downloading of files transmitted via HTTP protocol on HTTPS pages. At present, only the Google Chrome browser automatically loads the URL through HTTPS. It is not clear whether this feature will also land on other Chromium browsers such as Edge.

The following is an introduction to the new features in Chrome 90

AV1 codec

AV1 is an open source codec designed to achieve higher quality video streaming with different form factors and platforms. Firefox already supports AV1, and Google Chrome has also received this feature in the latest update.

In addition to better video quality, AV1 can also reduce data usage, especially on mobile devices (Android and iOS) or when you have a slow Internet connection.

AV1 is not just to improve the quality of streaming media. In theory, this feature can provide better compression efficiency and screen sharing on services such as Discord and Microsoft Teams (Web).

However, the AV1 support in the Chrome browser is not enough to improve the visual quality. The content on the website also needs to use AV1 encoding instead of H.264 or other formats.

Window rename

Google Chrome will get a new window management feature to make it easier to identify multiple browser windows. To access this feature, you need to open the Chrome menu (…), click on “More Tools”, and then select “Rename Window”.

Or you can right-click on the browser window to access this function.

Chrome 90 will remember the name you configured for the window, and they will be restored the next time you open the browser or the browser suddenly crashes.

IT Home is informed that this feature will also come to the 90 version of Microsoft Edge browser.

Other improvements in Chrome 90

  • WebXR in-depth API. The Chrome browser will obtain a new API based on the existing WebXR device API to improve the browser experience in AR. Using this API and depth buffer information, Chrome-based applications will better understand the user’s environment.
  • The URL protocol setter is being activated to improve standards compliance.
  • Performance stacking. For developers, the Chrome browser is getting an optional new coverage, which will use Core Web Vitals and other metrics promoted by Google to highlight the performance of the site.
  • safety. The Chrome browser will now block connections to HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP servers on port 554 to mitigate NAT Slipstream 2.0 attacks.

Google said that Chrome browser 90 is being launched and it is likely to be available for download in the next few days.
