Ben Thanh is one of the oldest markets in HCMC. The new market at the current location started construction in 1912 and was completed by the end of March 1914. Initially, the location of the market was located on the banks of the Ben Nghe River, near Gia Dinh citadel (then called Quy or Bat Quai citadel). This place is named Ben Thanh, a place for visitors and soldiers to rest when entering the citadel. The old market is located next to it, so it is called Ben Thanh market. Then, in 1912, a new market was built in a different location and still uses the name Ben Thanh to this day. Photo: Hoai Nhan.
