The largest intensive care center in the North at the Bac Giang Provincial Psychiatric Hospital has just placed ECMO for 2 severe COVID-19 cases.
On the afternoon of June 15, the medical team at the 101-bed Intensive Care Center located at the Psychiatric Hospital of Bac Giang province conducted ECMO (artificial cardiopulmonary bypass) for a 37-year-old female patient.

According to information from the Center for Intensive Care, female patient HTH (37 years old) was admitted to Bac Giang Lung Hospital on May 26 and given oxygen, but her disease progress was not good. On May 28, the patient was given HFNC (High Flow Oxygen Therapy through the Nasal Catheter). On June 2, the patient was intubated with mechanical ventilation, osiris dialysis, and used antibiotics. Severe COVID-19 patients placed ECMO at the largest Intensive Care Center in the North. At 8 pm on June 14, the patient was transferred to the Intensive Care Center and continued to receive mechanical ventilation, dialysis, and vasopressor use. However, the state of right heart failure is very severe, must use high-dose vasopressors, diffuse bilateral lung damage, does not respond to optimal medical treatment. Therefore, at 4 pm on June 15, the patient was assigned to conduct ECMO placement. As the person who directly treats the patient, Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung – Deputy Head of the Department of Intensive Care and Anti-Poison (Danang Hospital), Head of the Da Nang Medical Delegation at Bac Giang Hospital said: “After placing ECMO, The patient was able to stop the vasopressors and improve the blood oxygenation index. However, the prognosis remains severe because of damage to both the heart and lungs. Previously, on June 12, at the Intensive Care Center, ECMO was placed for NTT patient (67 years old). The patient tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus, then was admitted to Bac Giang Lung Hospital for treatment from June 3 with shortness of breath, cough, SpO2 85%, HFNC breathing and dialysis. At 12 o’clock on June 12, the patient was transferred to the 101-bed Intensive Care Center in a very serious condition, unresponsive to HFNC, so he was intubated, mechanically ventilated, but the patient’s lungs were severely damaged. spread on both sides. The patient was placed on ECMO right on 12/6. With this case, up to now, according to Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung: “The patient is awake, still dependent on ECMO, the lungs are tending to improve. Wishing all the best to the patient.” As of the afternoon of June 15, there were 60 patients at the 101-bed ICU Intensive Care Center. In which, the good news is that more than 25 patients have been successfully weaned from HFNC; Eight patients tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 for the first time and two patients tested negative for the second time.
