Qualcomm announces the use of 5G millimeter wave and Sub-6GHz aggregation to successfully complete data calls

Qualcomm Technologies announced today that it has successfully completed a dual-connection 5G data call based on the Sub-6GHz FDD/TDD frequency band and the millimeter wave frequency band in the 5G independent networking (SA) mode. Qualcomm Technologies engineers used the smartphone-shaped terminal equipped with the fourth-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon X65 5G modem and radio frequency system and Qualcomm QTM545 millimeter wave antenna module to first realize the dual connection data of the 5GSub-6GHz FDD frequency band and the 28GHz millimeter wave frequency band. The call, followed by a dual-connection data call in the 5GSub-6GHz TDD frequency band and the 39GHz millimeter wave frequency band, demonstrated the powerful ability of the Snapdragon X65 in aggregating high, middle and low frequency spectrum to support a combination of key frequency bands around the world.

Band aggregation includes dual connectivity using millimeter wave and Sub-6GHz frequency bands, which is essential to provide the multi-gigabit speeds and ultra-large capacity required for next-generation consumer and enterprise applications. The combination of frequency bands across different types of radio spectrum will not only support 5G mobile terminals, even in challenging network environments, such as crowded and traffic hubs, can achieve speeds comparable to wired broadband through wireless connections, but also can be used for homes and small-scale Enterprises provide robust and reliable 5G fixed wireless access services.

Dejia Ma, Senior Vice President and General Manager of 4G/5G Business of Qualcomm Technologies, said: “As the world’s leading wireless technology innovator, Qualcomm Technologies continues to create 5G solutions that can improve performance and expand global coverage. This milestone will be achieved. The combination of the large bandwidth advantage of the millimeter wave frequency band and the wide coverage advantage of the Sub-6GHz FDD/TDD frequency band supports global consumers and enterprises to make full use of 5G networks and terminals, especially in areas where bandwidth requirements are large and traditional wireless connections cannot be met. ”

On March 17, 2021, Qualcomm Technologies completed a milestone data call based on millimeter wave/Sub-6GHz carrier aggregation. The smartphone form terminal equipped with Snapdragon X65 is successfully connected to the 5G network using Keysight’s 5G network simulation solution, demonstrating the global compatibility and interoperability of Qualcomm Technologies’ solution with the 5G SA network deployed globally.

Qualcomm Technologies has been leading the global 5G millimeter wave development and commercialization, and has already sampled the 4th generation millimeter wave chipset for smartphones. The company’s latest generation Snapdragon X65 is the world’s first 5G modem and radio frequency system to provide a peak speed of 10Gbps, which is 100 times faster than its first-generation 4G modem.

According to relevant data from the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), there are more than 100 commercial and pre-commercial 5G millimeter wave terminals worldwide, covering mobile phones, PCs, mobile hotspots, CPEs, etc. Almost all of the aforementioned terminals are equipped with Snapdragon 5G modems and radio frequency systems.

Snapdragon X65 and Qualcomm QTM545 antenna modules are sampling to customers, and commercial terminals are expected to be available later in 2021.
