The perfect pink purple diamond ‘The Sakura’ reached a record $29.3 million at auction.

The diamond ‘The Sakura’. ‘The Sakura’, the “perfect inside” pink purple diamond is named after the cherry blossom, a pink flower, typical of the country of the rising sun. This 15.81-carat gem has just become the most expensive purple-pink diamond ever sold at an auction after hitting a record $29.3 million. The diamond was set on a simple platinum ring, according to the auction house Christie’s that organized the sale. The diamond is classified as “internally flawless”, as any internal imperfections are visible only under a microscope and “fancy vivid” because of the depth of color. ‘The Sakura’ was purchased by an Asian private buyer, however the auction house did not provide any further details. “We are delighted to have marked another important chapter in jewelry auction history with The Sakura reaching a record price,” said Chrsitie’s president of jewelry, Vickie Sek. .. continues Christie’s tradition of offering the finest pink diamonds at auction”. ‘The Sakura’ was auctioned off with another diamond called ‘The Sweet Heart’, a fancy vivid heart-shaped pink diamond ring weighing 4.2 carats, selling for 6.6 million dollars. ‘The Sakura’ beat the previous record set by a 14.8 carat purple-pink diamond dubbed ‘The Spirit of the Rose’. It was sold for more than $27 million in an auction held by Sotheby’s in Geneva, Switzerland last November. Only 1% of pink diamonds are said to be larger than 10 carats and only 4% are classified as “fancy vivid”. ‘CTF Pink Star’, weighing 59.6 carats, holds the current record for the highest price paid for a pink diamond at auction at $71.2 million. It was sold in a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong in April 2017.
